Texas' New Open-Carry Law Unpopular Among Some Gun Owners

This was posted over at Guns & Gals and I thought it might do well here. Note that even "alleged" gun owners like the wimp and his supposed girl friend don't want the Constitution obeyed and want to restrict our rights. I mean how lib-tard can you get when opposing the Bill Of Rights and the best you can come up with is "you want to scare people and have a really small d***!" Makes you wonder what the two of them are REALLY afraid of! I don't like the New York Times or other communist front rags, but I don't want to pass some stupid law that lib-tards can't have their 1st Am rights, although I'm sure I probably could make a pretty good argument in favor of it. Better than "you want to scare people and have a small d***!" anyway.

 

Personally, I would not open carry as I want to have a surprise for those who need one.

 

The question is would you try to prevent someone else from doing so because you don't want to?

Or use adolescent insults because you disagree with them?

 

How difficult is it to understand the phrase "shall not be infringed?"

I live in rural East Texas and in the first month of open carry I did not see a single individual carrying openly. It was, and is much to do about nothing.

 

Why would anyone deny another their rights?
What I said was personally I don't want others to know I am armed. Being visibly armed would make one the first target to deal with.

I'm not going to bother to answer that; some words aren't worth the time; especially adolescent ones.

 

We have open carry in AZ for as long as I have lived here(1959 moved here from Mich) we opened carried going hunting, but not much more.

Always had them in the vehicles and crime was not an issue.

Now even though we have Open Carry (still) Constitutional Concealed Carry(no permit req) & Permitted Concealeed Carry which gives privileges in areas that prohibit(posted) carry like parks and other places.

I still will always carry concealed, no matter what. I want the tactical advantage of having the bad guys not knowing who is carrying.

For me its not about demonstrating my Second Amendment rights. Its all about exercising it to the best of my ability if called on to put it to work.

Although I support open carry; I'm too sneaky.

 

I'm big on the advantage of surprise. I don't care if other people open carry or not. That's up to them. My personal view is that open carry is mentally/psychologically to some people like you pointing your gun at them. And they will feel a need to take it away from you to make themselves feel safe. You should ALWAYS pay attention to your surroundings to avoid being a victim.

 

BT. I forgot about reciprocity which is why I ahve an AZ CCW as well as one for WA State for when I travel there.

 

Not day in and day out, but I carry openly (or at least don't worry about maintaining concealment) frequently in the summer...but generally not outside my little city of 35K and the surrounding area. I would do it more if more other people did but just don't want the hassle. I have pretty "significant" training but really don't want to list it here. I trained others in felony stops for 6 years though. I really don't find either concealed or open as the superior mode...I carry and, if concealed is going to be uncomfortable I carry openly.

 

There's a fellow in our neighborhood who carries openly (legal here). See him in the grocery store fairly often as well. No problems associated with it that I've ever heard of.

There might be an incident or two around the country where open carriers have been robbed, but if someone successfully robbed them of their firearm, they need to learn to be a little more aware of their surroundings and faster on the uptake. Use that hunk of iron for what it was intended. It's not an ornament.

 

I say open carry for all.....including Muslims...they have 2A rights too! Nobody should feel nervous about being followed by folks with open carry guns.

 

Personally I prefer to open carry for multiple reasons:

1. Deterrence: the obvious fact that one or more people are armed can cause one to rethink their intentions and/or look for a softer target. There is a reason why cops not only wear uniforms, but also carry their firearms unconcealed while doing in uniform: visibility = potential deterrence.

2. Conditioning: back in the days when everyone openly carried their firearms, people didn't panic at the sight of a person carrying a firearm. Remember, open carry used to be the norm while concealed carry was considered the mark of someone up to no good...which was why we started passing laws prohibiting or restricting concealed carry. Today people seem to be conditioned to flip out and panic at the sight of an openly carried firearm...I would prefer to reverse that conditioning.

3. Cops: Being from a long line of cops, I understand the peace of mind that comes from actually "knowing" someone is armed than having to speculate and assume everyone is armed.

4. Concealed carry can be more uncomfortable, can cause more stress over ensuring the firearm remains concealed, and requires government permission/defacto registration.

Granted, there are tactical advantages to carrying concealed, some deterrence value from the theory that one has to assume someone may be armed, even if it can't be seen, and of course the notion that criminals will obey concealed carry laws is as wacky as all the other gun control laws. I'm just stating my personal preference for open carry.

I call that hoplophobia and open carry is my way of helping the unfortunate victims of that mental illness to overcome their handicap.

Moral of the story: neither open or concealed carry is a cure for stupid.

I see it as a choice based on a Right. Choice means your reasons are perfect for you and not for another.

In NC, when a LEO runs your tag, in the first few lines the report states if the owner of the vehicle has a CC permit. I don't know if that is an advantage or a disadvantage.
Most open carry rigs have the advantage of quickness to get the firearm out. By most, one of my open carry holsters is a military surplus 1911-A1 with the flap.
Having a CC in NC has the advantage of walk in and out with no NICS check when buying a firearm. That is an advantage. Also many private sales are now asking for a CC permit.

Same as concealed, open carry in a belt holsters can be just as uncomfortable when driving. At least any of the open carry type holsters I own. However, all of my carry firearms are full size semis; or 1911-A1, S&W M59, High Powers etc. so that may have influenced my results. Clip on types are nice as I can take it off and be a lot more comfortable than either open or concealed. However, that is my opinion based on my comfort.

When hiking, it is an open carry style holster which may be or may not be hidden by my jacket. I don't own a belt big enough to go around a heavy jacket. Plus in bad weather, I prefer my firearm to stay dry.

Again, it is not a question one can answer except with their personal reasons or opinions. Again as I see it, either is a Right accompanied by a choice. Our Rights are important and so are our ability to make our choices based on each individual's personal preferences.

In closing, I could care less if anyone carries open or concealed. I disagree strongly with a law that states I must have a license to carry concealed. Although my opinion will not change any law; it is still my right to have and express it.

 

You'll love how goofy it is here in Ohio. Open carry is and always has been perfectly legal...concealed carry was too, until the early 20th century when they decided to heavily restrict concealed carry with permits. Like other states, they didn't nip that nonsense in the bud right then and there **. While they did begin making it easier to get permits starting in the 90s, they also made open carry a pain in the butt when they decided in their infinite wisdom that legal open carry automagically becomes illegal concealed carry when you get into a motor vehicle, where the firearm must be unloaded and either cased, boxed, racked or in a compartment not accessible to the driver. So basically I have to unholster, unload and put my pistol either in my go-bag, shooting bag, a case...or in a rack in plain sight when I get in the vehicle, then get the firearm, reload and reholster when I get out. Kinda of a PIA, but I have gotten used to it. Yeah, there is a risk I could get carjacked and not have the firearm readily available, but I mitigate that risk somewhat with situational awareness and my refusal to let the law constrain me if the situation dictates.

Concealed carry permits are easy to get here...all I would need to do is submit the application and pay the man...which would allow me to "legally" retain my loaded firearm while driving, but I refuse to do so on moral grounds: free men don't need government permission to exercise their unalienable right to keep and bear arms. So I live within the constraints of the law...but will not let the law constrain me if the situation dictates. Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six, dontcha know.

** Funny how wacky this country was in those days...it was during that same era that they ratified the 16th & 18th Amendments.

Here it is an "it depends" where you are. The two big city counties Wake (Raleigh) and Mecklenburg (Charlotte) are strict. The proverbial blue areas are dangerous because they are filled with liberals, aka victims.
Where I am now and was in what is called Down East; with or without a permit, just throw the pistol on the car seat.
Michigan was bad. Except for a shotgun and a deer rifle, I left the toys at my parent's house. No offense to Michiganders; but I left in less than 2 years. Native Michiganders are great; unfortunately, a lot of the imports are liberals.

I've been stopped for speeding, at those check points, and even "caught" by the NC Highway Patrol for wearing a seat belt, twice no less. They gave me a card saying I was a good guy and entered me in a drawing. No, I didn't win. Every time I had a loaded handgun in the open and no problem.

To be honest, the biggest thing I personally have against open carry for me, myself and I; is I dislike being stared at in public. In plan English, being stared at creeps me out.

I agree with your "free men don't need government permission to exercise their unalienable right to keep and bear arms." Plus what business is it of anyone's? Other than yours is the question.
The Second is a Right and it is up to each person to choose to own or carry a firearm. That is freedom of choice. However don't cry to me if one gets robbed, car jacked, raped or mugged etc. Nor gloat if one has made it through their life unarmed. As the old saying goes pay your dollar and take your ride or is it risk.

Here we have to take a course for a CC. Who the H are they to tell anyone to take a course?

Personally, it does not matter open or concealed, same as you, I dislike people seeing or others knowing.
