I am not going ANYWHERE, but I have been a Base Station, and Relay Center, on a number of occasions...

I didn't see anything in the article saying where to go. Lots of adverts for computer security, though.

Not going anywhere either...direct voice and digi links to area EOCs to include the NWS (weather and hydrology) and GOSHEP (state equivalent of homeland security.) And we have worked with them to ensure they had back up equipment and power to keep on the air during any event, along with personnel to work the stations.

    Got comms?

Here's a lesson for ya. It's more of an editorial than a lesson, so take it however you want...

I am not a member of any amateur-radio related local group, club, or organization.

I know many hams involved with them and most of those guys are more likely to need help than offer it.

A few years ago I got a letter out of the blue from the county emergency services inviting me to join them. They obviously harvested my name from the FCC database.

I took a pass on the invite, but not because I have anything against them. They're actually a pretty decent bunch.

It's bad enough my amateur radio license is public record; I did not want to be on some county list as the guy with tons of radio gear and enough off-gird energy capability to stay on the air for literally years after the rest of the world goes poof!

Getting involved with these groups means by default you out yourself as someone with at least sense of preparedness, and presumably, some resources. Carefully consider if showing your hand is a worthwhile tradeoff for being involved with the group.

For me, it wasn't a good deal. YMMV.

I hear you @Tevin ... You can't imagine. How many times I get a Call, or eMail, from someone, that heard from someone else, that I am a ReTIRED FCC Field Agent, and need help, or want me to join their Group... By my nature, I am NOT a Joiner... I am here, only because I can identify with The Monkeys, on a Personal Basis... I have little interest in "Rag Chewing" on the HF Bands with folks I do not know... Contesting drives me CRAZY... All that aside, I do Elmer young Folks, and do Help Folks with Licensing Issues, when asked... Usually Pro Bono... I do Consult, for Money, as well, but only on Jobs that interest Me, from a Technical Standpoint... The Path Survey, documented in the Comms Forum, is an example of that.... OpSec isn't as big of deal, out here in the Alaskan Bush, as it is down in The FlatLands.... The same is true, for my Long Standing Career, as a PowderMan... Although I am way to Old to do the Heavy Lifting, On Site, these days... But I do consult, and crunch the Math, on projects that interest me... Still.... For most Monkeys, OpSec should be a mandatory consideration..
