Taiwan investigates building toppled in quake after oil cans spotted in its pillars

Questions about the structural integrity of a toppled 17-storey building have been raised, after it crumbled in a 6.4-magnitude earthquake Saturday morning in southern Taiwan that is known to have killed 18 people and injured 484 so far.

Images have been circulating online of cooking oil cans clearly visible in pillars of the collapsed Wei Guan Golden Dragon Building in Tainan City, which was built in 1989. Some are questioning whether the oil cans were used as shoddy filler material in the building's construction, and if this had a part to play in the building coming down in the quake.

Interior minister, Chen Wei-zen, said an investigation has been launched into whether the building's developer had cut corners, but noted the building had not been listed as a dangerous structure before the quake.

Albeit an alarming sight, the cooking oil cans may not have been that much of a structural liability, a building technician told Taiwanese paper, Apple Daily. Tai Yun Fa said the metal oil cans are sometimes used in decorative pillars that aren't weight-bearing, and the light barrels can help reduce the overall weight of the building and benefit its structure.

About 171 people have been rescued from Wei Guan, according to Tainan's emergency center. By Sunday morning, rescuers continued to search for about 132 people still trapped inside.

Wei Guan isn't the only building that came down Saturday; nine others in the city collapsed and five are tilted at an angle.

Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage. One of the largest quakes in recent history, a 7.6-magnitude event in central Taiwan in 1999, killed more than 2,300 people.

well okay, I will take up the ball and run with it. I own 20 wooded acres in rural florida. I do not like straight trails or roads or driveways. no one who doesn't own an aircraft, satellite, or drone can see whatever I decide to do upon my property. if I want to live in a tent and cook over an open fire and shit in a hole in the ground ..... what I do affects no one but me unless I start a wildfire. I have to pay about $2000 dollars in taxes a year for a whole slew of things I use not at all or very little. it is nobody's damn business what I may decide to do on my property as long as I am a good steward of the land / air /and water and do not adversely have an effect on these things with regard to my neighbors. If I want to be off the grid to rid myself of the anchor around my neck, I should be allowed to. I have a generator, 2 wells, manual water extraction capability, ditto 12vdc extraction, and yes at present I am on the grid and have a 240vac submersible well pump as well. I have had, and will again have chickens and rabbits. I have gates, fencing and signs marking the property and discouraging trespassing. I have a big rotty who discourages tresspassers as well. she takes her job seriously. LEOs would be well advised to make an appointment before entering beyond a gate without prior knowledge by me. Should a LEO shoot my dog there will be hell to pay. I will extract retribution or revenge as I deem acceptable. Then I will replace her with 2 bigger dogs. I live alone at present so have no one else to impress or answer to. Considering how screwed up the country and whole damn world is, most of the time I like my solitude. I have friends and family I can go visit with anytime I feel like venturing outside my woods. I pay taxes for schools, and yet can not visit to see what they are teaching. Common core, and the dumbing down of amerika? don't get me started. I also pay for solid waste removal yet have to take it to a pickup location or to the dump where I would be reguired to pay again? WTF. I pay for fire and emt services. all these are on top of my property taxes but they are added to and collected just like the property tax is on the same annual bill. all of which MUST be paid in full on time or your unpaid tax bill in full gets sold to an invester who gets between 8 and 18% interest computed monthly until it is paid in full including this high interest tax added to the tax. If I want to build a small building for my generator, why do I need any input whatsoever from the county building dept. ditto a pole barn for rabbits and chickens, or another for storage of my tractor, or for my boats. these are all for my personal use. I ain't renting squat here or inviting folks to come in step on a nail or something or to get bit by the dog.
    .
So tell me again why I need building codes, code enforcement, or building inspectors, or epa, or usda, or dept of ed, or energy, etc etc.

You do not rent, sell or loan anything you own. You do not invite the public onto your place, there for this question does not apply to you.

I have NO Building Codes, where I live, EXCEPT for Commercial Buildings.... and that is the way I feel it should be everywhere.... Let the Insurance Outfits regulate the Codes for non-commercial Buildings.... If you go to sell your non-commercial Building, let the Banks and Insurance Folks decide if they will Insure it, and finance the Sale. If they do NOT like the construction, they will not touch it, and it is the owners issue, as it should be.... Commercial Buildings must follow the Building Codes... My Opinion, YMMV....

I feel pretty much the same here with one caveat. I have cattle that might get out and it is my responsibility to protect anything that comes from my place, so I have procured insurance to protect others if such an event happens.

For me it is all about personal responsibility.

Amen! THAT is why you don't need building codes. The Alamo wasn't built with building codes, St. Marks Cathedral wasn't built with/using building codes, I doubt the Tower of Landon needed any building codes either.

@Legion489 Just a NOTE here... None of those Places are Known for EarthQuakes, Big or Shallow... And places that ARE known for BIG & Shallow EarthQuakes, aren't known for ancient Architecture, as most of it was already destroyed....

Well the Aztecs/Mayans might disagree. Nearly all of them are still standing after 600 years while the modern buildings there are rubble. Of course they had building codes back then, it fails, you die!

Actually the only Tall buildings left by those folks, are Pyrimids, which we do not build these days and few of these are over 200 ft high....and really not subject to earthquakes... You find no multiStory ancient Dwellings , in earthQuake country...or really anywhere else...Any other Tall buildings have long since tumbled...
