We have a similar one. If one camps a lot using a 20# or 30# tank makes life easier. The camper has 2X 30#s. The 20#s sure beat her saying if we want to eat, I need another 1#'er.

I've hunted mornings with hors frost coating everything, and my breath freezing to my face. Now I have pop up blinds, a buddy heater, and a 3gallion 12lb tank made for tailgating.

That's what I use at our hunting cabin along with a 20lb hose adapter for an lantern. Yes it makes the lantern and stove a bit more "un-portable", but when used in a fixed location they work great.

I've thought about trying to refill the 1lb tanks but just never did. Of course the usual common sense rules apply, don't refill in an enclosed space.

If you're going through so many 1 pounders that you need to refill them, you might need to look at the adapter hoses. They may save you time.

 

I have bulk tank adapter hose, extension hose, triple tree, and refill adapter. And about a dozen bulk tanks, and perhaps twenty five one pound bottles at present. I got it pretty well covered.

I added a wet-leg fitting to my 250 gallon tank many years ago planning on doing just that... Where do you get the hoses and fittings, and valve to make that work?

Great info. I have to helicopter my 20# propane tanks into my cabin and this will save me money filling those expensive 1# tanks.

 

We came to that decision quite a while ago. Unless one has a need for a 1#'s portability; a 20# or 30# are hard to beat. It got old having to change tanks on the Camp Chef with food on it.
Same as many others we had quite a few 20#s from old gas grills.

I test my tanks with bubbles (spit works just fine, better than hearing).
I found some brass caps 2 for $8. it's worth it, seeing some valves especially coleman do not reseal perfectly after a single use ,not to mention refilling .
Safety valves can leak too, and those that fail can be adjusted with the right tool, but if it won't seal mark it for disposal . do not attempt to use a tank that has a leaky safety valve .
Rather than disturb the safety valve however, after you can hear the initial flow is stopped , one could take an adaptor and bleed off the gas vapor from the main port ,then reinstall the bottle for further filling.
If you don't mess with the safety, it won't likely leak.
Bubbles are proof.
I also have a combustable gas leak detector , but bubbles are a good positive proof.

 

Wal-mart has the refill adapter for sale@ I think $16.95.

 

Will have to check out Wal mart site for that.. Have a few empty bottles layin around.. Never can tell what they may be used for..

 

Partially fill then test , if they pass the continue filling. if they don't pass you haven't wasted much time and fuel.
