How awesome would it be to have each car be a tiny home and travel all over with your friends and family!

I think tiny houses are cute but if one is a prepper I just do not know how it would work.

Maybe not as fun as you think.;). There are two rail lines in California within perhaps 20-30miles of eachother. (Owned by different companies). Any idea how far you would have to travel to get a train car from one line to the other? Chicago!!!

There's a fairly large culture of private rail cars. However you need very deep pockets to play the game.
Plus you're restricted by rails and all it entails.

I think a hobbit hole community would actually be more fun and leave less of a foot print as well

I used to RV many years ago. There were tours that would load your RV on a flatbed rail car and take you to Mexico or to Alaska. I always wanted to do that but never got the chance. A quick google showed that they don't do them anymore.
The village I live in was at one time a hobbit style village. It was originally located along the coast but the villagers got tired of pirates raiding them every year. So they moved the entire village to a plateau about 300' up the mountain from the shore. They built their houses halfway into the ground so that only a small portion of the house and the roof were visible. From a ship at sea, and even from the shore just down from the plateau the houses could not be seen. The next spring when the pirates returned they found an abandoned village and assumed the people had all fled inland. They left and never returned to that area again.

I would like one of those old Caboose cars to sit on the property here to use as a man cave since the wife isn't playing fair...maybe I will look into but bet the would be too expensive. Googling now... - Rick

They make a lot of sense for climate control and protection wise... My land is flat with no hills but when I was thinking of a building a root cellar my thought was to dig down a bit 1.5-2 meters (can't get too deep due to water table here), then pour concrete floor and walls, cover with logs from the property, lay some metal roofing on top then bring in a dump truck load of dirt to cover it and plant some grass. You would have to dig a pathway down to it or use a ladder but think it would be cool enough for root cellar and pretty good storm shelter too....not exactly a Hobbit Hole but nice little shelter - Rick

You must go down into the ground at lest 5ft or the below your area fost line to get the real effects of having it buried .Plus another basic factor is fresh air supply and hot air out of the unit with a good cross ventilation for the air to m

I was going to run some 8 inch pipes down (in each corner). I did this before and it seemed to work.
