    Does anyone know where wild boar are in NC? Normally, I would scout but Id rather not risk being charged or surprised without a partner to back me up. I heard there was some by or around Henry Fork or Hender river today, as well as near/around South Mountain and also in Alexander county. Can anyone verify?

    Hey lone wolf, they really do fear you more than I do them. Seriously they will do most everything they can to avoid you. I hunt hogs all alone most of the time, and also during muzzle loading season without carrying a modern centerfire multishot pistol for backup. You are correct in that you have to go where they are known to be. That info is usually available thru the state game management people. Driving around farm country with lots of water close by and watching for plowed area right alongside the road which upon closer examination are found to be loaded with hog tracks and or talking to local farmers is another way. Do an online search. Ask local newspapers if they have ran articles in the past about wild hog problems. You are going to find a lot of wild sows and pigs than you do wild boar, and they are better eating anyway. Scout any wildlife management area that game management says have large quantities of hogs. Move thru the woods like you are stalking gray squirrels with a single shot rifle and you are hungry. There has to be water nearby (ponds, creeks, river, swamp, whatever). The LOVE water. Move slow with the wind in your face. If the previous 4 sentences mean nothing to you or you disagree, I can do nothing to help you. Good luck good hunting. PS: you will hear them usually before you see them. They are competitive within their group. Only a few things are on their mind. Procreating, fighting over that, eating, fighting over that, and just fighting. They are noisy at all of that. You will hear them.

    2014 if I'm not mistaken. Several big monsters come to mind, including "Hogzilla". I agree, stay alert. They WILL eat people. (Mob had used pigs to disappear a body or two)

    Oh, I know the big ones are rare. That's why they make the news. They're pretty rare here in Ohio but there are a few. I'm still looking for mine. I have a pig sized rotisserie waiting for mine.

    Staying alert is important as having the ability to protect oneself. Fifteen years ago when I first moved to the mountain house, I decided to hike down to the river. As the slopes are steep, I walked down to a small brook planning to follow it hoping it would prove to be the easiest path. After I went a hundred yards of so; I saw a large bear track in the mud and it was still filling with water. As it was Spring, thoughts of mama and baby crossed my mind.
    Later, I did hike to the river with a friend. Although I have forgotten his first name, his last name was Magnum. ;)

    @Bishop
    As long as one gives them space, I don't believe any animal would do us harm. They would much rather avoid us and enjoy their lives That being said, I do believe if one gets between them and their young or their avenue of escape, one is at risk.

    That is true of most animals but not all. Some animals will attack simply because you run it's that prey vs predator. Some simply because they're hungry and you look tasty. I never assume that just because you're in the woods hunting, something in the woods might not be hunting you. There are many many game camera pictures and videos of things that are not supposed to be present where they are captured on camera.
    Edit:hell, for a whole lot of years, they claimed Ohio had no poisonous snakes. We have three different breeds.

    That hog was mostly a cross between a domestic hog and a wild hog the barrs are the ones that get real big they have been caught and castrated and let go they don't chase the sows any more all the do is eat and get big they lose there shields because they don't fight any more and they taste better than when they was a boar.

    @kellory When did Ohio claim no venomous snakes. Always had Water Moccasin's/Cottonmouths, Pygmy Rattlesnakes, and Copperheads. We used to go to State fair in Ohio. They always had displays of each live or dead.

    It used to be taught in school even. I was called a liar in class when I questioned the school books. I've been a hunter for @45 years. I brought a rattlesnake rattle for show and tell once. One we killed. Was told I must have bought it, since Ohio had none. It has been quite a few years, but it was the accepted norm.

    The dogs are my ears and this sees both day or night:

    I like our gardens more than creatures who eat the fruits of our labors. We grow vegetables both here at the campsite. It's a fair amount if work and transgressors raid at their own risks.

    Hogs are scavengers not predators, they can be mean a agro if cornered or pursued but they are, in my experience at least, no good reason to stay out of the bush ..... I have now been hunted myself a couple of times now and it is not a pleasant experience... not a hog of course... ;)

    ....she was in charge of a small pride that spent about 3hrs hunting us early in the morning.... she thankfully never decided to press it home.

    Hunted more than my fair share of hogs, in fact they are probably my favourite game ...
