Swamp cabbage

Anyone cut and eat swamp cabbage the heart's of palm trees.

 

I haven't for years. It's good, and it'll definitely keep you alive, but the tree has to die to provide it.

 

Yes it does but the light that gets to the seed berry under the fronds produces more trees.

1gal cut up heart of palm cabbage
1/2 lbs of bacon
Garlic salt and pepper
In a cook pot brown bacon that's been cut up and drain gresse add palm cabbage with just enough water to cover and place on high cook until tender server with fish chicken oysters pork beef deer crawfish clams most any meat.

 

Would this be the same plant we call Palmettos?

No but you can eat the saw palmettos the the one I posted is the sable palm they get up to 60 feet tall.

I have harvested both the Sable and Palmetto palm hearts while I lived in Florida. I could not tell the difference in tastes between the two and all the hearts that I harvested came from land clearing for housing and development. The growth rate of both are so fast that they will not end up on the endangered species list anytime soon.

Palm hearts are right up there with the Kudzu as a very plentiful food source for both everyday or survival consumption for those that live in the deep south.
