Vindows 10 Havs Vays of Makingk You Upgrade!

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

I write now as a fugitive from Windows 10 on a borrowed computer.

Tonight, in the middle of an offline task, my computer started uploading Windows 10 without any consent on my part.

Since it told me not to turn off my computer, I immediately turned off my computer, hoping to crush the upload like a cockroach.

After disconnecting from the Internet, I restarted my computer and the upgrade continued like an inadequately stomped cockroach.

So I shut it back off again.

And it will stay off until this problem is fixed. Even if it requires a total switch to Linux.

I will probably be scarce for a few days at least.

This borrowed computer tried to start a forced upgrade the instant I turned it on. Fortunately I was able to close it out before it initiated.

We are all in danger. Any one of us may be next.

If only Sky Net could save us from Bill Gates...

    I like Mint.

Supposedly Apple is good too, but you have to hit the lottery first.

I used to have a three way boot, DOS, Win 7 and Linux. Win 10 upgrade trashed the partition table (data stored on another drive, so it was safe). When I reloaded OSs, Windows did not get reinstalled - intentionally.

It's out the, well, window. That was the last straw.

I switched everything to Apple except for a laptop here at work and one music computer in my studio that has never been on-line and never will. It seems quite happy to run Professional into eternity.

Hoo-Ah! I got lucky last night.

(No, it's not what you think!)

I got lucky because when I disconnected on that attempted Windows 10 upgrade, I apparently killed it.

The upgrades I got thereafter were all the usual fiddly little ones, but according to my comp, I'm still on Windows 8.1.

And now I have every automatic upgrade turned off.

    For. Ever.

I get that annoying Windows 10 ad all the time but I have the auto updates turned off. I do know what you are talking about @UncleMorgan. The other night the desk top started a download of up-dates that I didn't approve. Like you, I turned off the computer when it told me not to.

If you had WIN 8.x loaded beforehand, the upgrade to 10 comes automatically. I saw a huge improvement over 8.x but YMMV. Normally MS makes you pay for a major upgrade.

IMO I think Windows 10 will only be free for a while. There was a blurb on get it while it is free. These people do not give stuff away. Free makes me suspicious.

Free for current W7, W8.x users for sure, others maybe, up thru July of this year. After that, there will be a (to me) unknown price. Supposedly, and I have sincere doubts, once W10 is on the machine, all updates will be automatic and free. What smells about that is it becomes less obvious how M$ makes money for the stockholders. Uv cuss, there will be things like the annual cost to use Office 365, and I suppose the M$ cloud will have a user fee at some point. They sure do NOT miss a way to suck on wallets.

I did that on my wife's laptop and my media servers.... it got replaced by a different ad until the next update reinstalled KB3033383. 10is buggy as hell, though better than 8.1. Hoping it will leave my Win 7 machines the hell alone after June.

I've owned (and paid for) every M$ OS since MS-DOS 2.1, and I'm about ready to upgrade from Windows to Linux.

There is info out there, and maybe already here someplace that says updates will look for uninstalled components/updates and put them back in if you've deleted them earlier. There's one cautionary note already out there that says check all your settings after each update because W10 will reset them. One thing to do is set up so that Windows tells you that updates are available (which I think I've done but have to check again since it might have been reset, dammit.) One of the reasons I held off so long was to get some of the bugginess cured and updates available to cure them. The new machine apparently isn't too buggy, but it is a factory install. I'm betting a bundle that upgrades to 7 and 8.x are NOT bug free due to internal conflicts, thus holding off on upgrading my W7 machine until the last minute in July.

As far as I can tell, the big problem for MS is that XP lasted 10 years and they had to beat it to death with a stick.
Win 7 promises to be even more resilient. That means they are stuck from a maintenance point of view unless they can get folks to a newer platform. WIN 10 is a better platform in my estimation. My suggestion to anyone is that it is worth trying, especially if you have plenty of memory. I had bugs after the install, but they have mostly been resolved. You can revert back off 10 without major fuss if it does not work for you.

I'm disinclined to go to Windows 10 because of the data-mining and password grabbing issues I've read about. And I purely don't like being forced to, anyway.

True, they had to come up with a new revenue source when XP worked so well. 7 was a very worthy successor and 8 did NOT do any good. 9 died aborning, so here's 10. Support for XP no longer exists from M$, but there are some help on line from geeks and gurus. There is a scheduled end for support for both 7 and 8, but off the top of my head, I don't know when that will be. Reversion on new machines, well, dunno bout that, but my 7 box will, so they say,. be revertable.

I don't blame you at all for being wary. Yes, there are some issues with collecting personal data, BUT (and it's a big but) you can opt out of those "services" or so they say. If there's nothing hidden and undiscovered at this point, opting out of those services will avoid the issues entirely. Am I sure that there's nothing hidden? No, and I don't trust them as far as I can nudge a D10 by hand. I do know that every update they offer or force on you, that you need to go back and make sure they didn't sneak one in on you. If that need will be persistent, we don't know. Yet.

The issues I've read about that bother me most, is the reporting issues. W10 is supposed to look for illegal programs, and illegal activity and report it to microsux, and from there to the "authorities ". Since when does your own computer betray you? Microsux acts like your computer belongs to them, and if you don't want part of thier lineup, too bad, we will reinstall it from our end.
