are these fairly easy to keep and butcher? i was thinking my kids would like snacking on the little eggs, and their small size might make them a good introduction to poultry butchering for myself. lol.

You would have to put a tarp up so they don't hit the roof the fly up when scared the tarp acts like a cushion eggs are good easy to clean I like to make bacon wrapped sea scallops and make the eggs over easy and put on top serve with honey ham wrapped asparagus.

for the work & small size , chickens have larger eggs/meat , small chickens are a pithand for my wife to clean , big birds are EZ.

Quail is tasty.... but an awful lot of work for the small amount of sustenance they provide as CS said!!!
As a practical exercise.... go for it if you like. But as a resource for being a prepared individual, Quail would not be on my list.

My wife can dress a chicken the fastest I've ever seen. She puts it under her arm pulls its head to break its neck then hangs it up by the feet cuts the throat lets it bleed out then dips in pot of hot water plucks the feathers then proceeds to remove the innards keep what you want cut it up and cook. She makes it look easy.

i just have to get over the newbie "ick" factor of taking the guts out, and ive never killed anything on purpose other than mice to feed my reptiles. i do have chickens and love keeping them!

Try latex gloves and put some spaghetti noodles and gelatin in a Ziploc bag and practice pulling it out you will get over it and there's not much in a quail.

Same here , wife is 3 times quicker than I ,BUT you should look at each/all innards & inspect to make sure the bird is healthy , we do find ill ones . You'll figure it out & use your nose !

Butchering a quail? Easy. Cut out the breast and you have 94% of the usable meat. Wings? You ever SEE a quails wings after plucking? Legs? Same deal.

Good videos on youtube about cleaning quail. Pickled quail eggs are tasty. The quail eggs are supposed to be good for allergies.some vitamin they have or something. I think they are a good idea. Texas A@M quail were supposed to be some kind of idea to replace chickens.

Micro poultry is not quite the same as micro brewing.....its a lot of effort for not much return, but it's probably more productive than keeping Axolotls. Though, quail would be the perfect EdGein, urban studio apartment, self sufficiency, fresh meat and eggs project. ;)
