I know the story well, but can you hit anything with it, with what consistency, what weight and what velocity?

I have tried one, but had no accuracy at all (and yes, I know it was me).

I know that, historically, a military slinger (to qualify) was supposed to be able to consistently hit a target the size of a man's head at around 200 yards...

Tried one too, haven't got the technique down well enough to throw anything. Big hold up for me is that I have to make ammo from baked clay.

Ammo, is anything you want to throw, and will fit the pouch. Baked clay (with rocks) was to make shrapnel, and be impossible to throw back.
(They did the same thing with trebuchet and balista)

I use old spark plugs you can sling one under hand 4 to 5 hundred yards easy and they will spiral like a foot ball clay balls rocks fishing weight rebar cut down.

I have taken coots and ducks at some pretty far ranges with under hand slinging by walking my shots to them I don't know the speed of them but it's fast.

Then it's useful if you can kill food with it.

The Greeks had one word printed on Thier lead slugs, it translated in English to "take this"

There are no natural rocks in my AO. By trade only. I very much meant that I HAVE to make them in order to practice.

Were used as a major military weapon for a long time. Wonder if they are covered by the Second Amendment and are still relevant. When you read about the problems with "stone throwing youths" in the middle east, the kids are using these and can kill a soldier if they hit him in the right spot. Had a friend in high school who was raised in Palestine, before the split, and used a sling from about the age of 3 or so. He was better at killing rabbits with it, at age of 16, than I was with a 22. Like the long bow, good weapon, but long learning curve and best learned at a young age. I could throw as hard and far as he could, but couldn't reliably hit a 10 foot square target. The release point and angle are like a baseball pitch, easy to describe, almost impossible to do without hundreds of hours of practice and the final accurate doing of it is a feeling and not a thought process. Lots of things go back to the old children's games. the US army hand grenades in WWII were shaped like a baseball, the German's used one with a wooden handle, guess who played ball and who didn't?

I have never heard of one. Sounds like you hit people with it.

You can whorl them over hand and under and over you head and from all angles it just takes some imagination.
My first were shoe string and leather from a old glove . I was about 14 and lived in the mountains so I had plenty to play with .
played with boomerangs too ,some I bought and several dad made for me , After a while you learn to read the wind other wise you end up doing a lot of running.
Took out plenty of birds with sling shots and arrows . too much fun grown up .

I have used a staff sling (David's sling on a 4-5 foot staff...) really packs a wallop...a little harder to control until you get the hang of it... I could hit a 5 gallon bucket fairly consistently at 50 yards... not a hunting weapon but it was probably deadly against lightly armored troops in mass formations...

A sling works but only if one puts enough time into practicing into using it. Gee it is no different than a modern firearm.
I have a wrist rocket sling shot.. At first I thought it was a joke. Then I practiced with it until I could jump cans with it, Gee, it is no different than a rifle, pistol or bow and arrow.

However, using ball bearings is easier than using rocks.

In my youth I lived in an area where the glaciers had dumped gravel everywhere. I was quite deadly with a sling. Mine was shorter than the standard military version, with the pouch almost touching the ground with my arm down at my side. What I sacrificed in distance I made up for with accuracy. I had a bad experience with a stone that got tangled in the pouch trying to take my finger off, so I extended the fixed end of the sling to wrap around my wrist, with the cord run between my fingers. Much more comfortable when you practice for hours every day. I did put a hole right through the exterior wall of my parents home with an experimental super sling that was probably eight feet long. On the final rotation before release the pocket failed and at near maximum velocity the rock went flying off 180 degrees from its' intended target. Landed inside the living room coat closet.

Now I am in an area where rocks are scarce, and generally odd shaped. The staff sling is better suited to throwing this poor selection. They make a wicked noise as they go through the air at speed. With a large pocket made from a boot tongue I found that marl sand and pea gravel make the staff sling a dandy close range area weapon.
