From that site; in other words, some private entity is doing an evaluation that has no basis in other than in its own mind. Underline and bold added by me. Interesting toy, maybe?

The DEFCON Warning System is a private enterprise which monitors world events and assesses nuclear threats against the United States by national entities. It is not affiliated with any government agency and does not represent the alert status of any military branch. The public should make their own evaluations and not rely on the DEFCON Warning System for any strategic planning. At all times, citizens are urged to learn what steps to take in the event of a nuclear attack.

No troubles, marla. The "headline" is deceptive, just one more thing we need to keep ourselves alert for. The more of us awake, the more stuff we'll find ---

Oddly enough, I wasn't able to find a site (in a very quick looksee) that shows the real military defcon status. Pretty sure someone else can find it with more searching than I put into it.

It's classified, I used to be able to go to the SCIF and see what the heck was going on, but now it's better that I'm in the dark, my blood pressure has gone down, I no longer pull my hair out, I'm at peace with God, and I no longer beat my wife.

Last updated was Thursday 3/24. I think maybe the Defcon system has been retired and they now maintain the Terror-Alert system.
Terror-Alert.com this one always seems to be up-to-date.

Def-Con is still active, but only used by .MIL, and Classified.... It is for "War Footing".... Terror-Alert is for Civilians, and State and Local Operations.... and maintained by Homeland Security.... Two different things, with Two different, audiences...

Why would it be classified? Most Americans are probably considered collateral damage in the Governments eyes but I think we should know if that North Korea jerk is really a threat or just material for awesome memes.

It has always been "Classified". and the .MIL will always help it that way, as if it was public, the Sheeple would panic, every time it move up a notch, by some current event.... We only hear about it when someone who has "Clearance" shoots his Mouth off...

I'm with Moto here. Last year I would have asked my dad. He passed away in December. I can hear him saying "The US Navy doesn't worry about dumbbells." I can also hear him saying, "Never turn your back on a lunatic with a nuke."

We don't need to destroy his country - he's doing a hell of a good job on his own. At an estimated 300 lbs he just told his country to be ready to eat grass and roots so he can increase military spending.

    Ain't communism fun, folks?

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

A nice post, Motomom, but what really had me laughing was the picture you put in it.

That technology will bring us to our knees? A floppy disk? They don't even make them anymore!

(Oh, I am so quaking in my fuzzy bunny-boots!)

On the serious side, tho, I think the DefCon status is classified partly to avoid tipping off the people we intend to nuke into prehistory, and partly to prevent panic in the streets and flash-floods of refugees every time we hit DefCon 2.

The economic losses alone when 30 million people all decide to skip work for a while and boogie on outta town would be horrific. To say nothing of the traffic jams.

If I want to know what is happening around the globe.
I monitor twitter and have set up a watch list.
It's going to be on twitter before our government lets us know anyway.

Yeah, I know there is a lot of noise to signal ratio but filtering out the crap isn't that difficult (I really don't care about Kim K's butt anyway)

Probably before the government knows. Zero has put all the interesting agencies to sleep, or outed them.

I lived through a real SAC DEFON 2 in Grand Forks ND next to Grand Forks AFB with Minuteman missiles, B52's and KC 135's.
Some USAF families and all Boeing contractor families building Minuteman silos lived off base and word got around the supermarket shelves were quite bare.

It was October 1962 a little thing in Cuba was going on..

That is quite interesting. Did people start evacuating also? Part of the history during that time was they used to have kids practice crawling under theirs desk. I have heard that really would not have made that much of a difference.

No real change that I saw if you went west there was Minot AFB, south Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota, east Duluth airport with fighters along with Camp Ripley the Minn. national guard camp, north Winnipeg Canada the Russians would have hit all of them.

I remember civil defence films where they showed getting under desks and if you had a loaf of bread in wrapper with dust on it after a hit turn it over and slit the bottom then remove the bread..

I don't think any one thought that under a desk was radiation proofing. The reasoning was mechanical protection if the structure was damaged. Like keep the falling ceiling from denting noggins. One thing became painfully obvious, most kids were too big to fit under those classroom desks.
