Kinda what I was thinking...about the stomach acids.

I see a trend so far in the vitamins, but are any supplements missing? I'm mid-forties now...anything I should look at? I've lived hard and never thought too much about my health in my younger years. Also, being the big guy, I never thought twice about being the one to move or do whatever someone needed. That has taken it's toll as well. I guess what I'm saying is, I have many days when I feel much older than my actual years. I just push through it.

As I said, I'm not one for taking pills. I eat as well as I can, given finances and schedule. Decent food is expensive, and having a single income for this household doesn't help. Good stuff goes to the kids. Up by 2:30a and in bed by about 9p...my schedule. A little more sleep on weekends.

Sorry for the ramble. Just not sure where to go from here.

Incidentally, this was not a complaint. I happily do what I do. This was the choice we made....we wanted the kids to be schooled at home. I'll gladly do whatever I need to see this through.

The advice and life lessons offered here are welcomed and greatly appreciated. However, the more I think about it, the more I think that this magic elixir I seek is not obtainable.

I'll keep digging and do what I need to do. But, thinking even more, this thread may very well need to be moved to the prayer closet.

I know where I need to be, I'm just looking for a map.

Thanks all for the advice. I'll keep searching and find what I need. Lots of information here.

It may be TMI, but am I the only one that has their bowels doing backflips when taking glucosamine? Is that just me?

Went a few rounds with skin cancer, but still get my sun. It just makes me feel good. Only one in my family to get it. Bad genes....who knows.

Graying hair just after high school, now a full white beard in my 40s...probably so.

No issues here, but since we are in TMI territory consider some psyllium fiber to regulate things. Also , maybe the brand you are using has something in it your body doesn't like?

That's your kidneys pushing all the extra out of your system after your body has processed everything. Far too much work, and a waste in my opinion. I think too many people take their bodies for granted, or they are just not aware of what they are doing. In moderation, your body will not be overworked. But, every day taking multivitamins? Not this guy.

We have been taking it almost daily ( My wife is more efficient than I) for over 6 months. We don't get sick as much, My wife swears by it. We have friends that have health issues and they called the other day and said they are amazed as well.
We buy it by the Kilo (2.2 pounds) on Amazon for about $36.00 and it lasts more than 6 months. My wife makes her own pills with a gel-cap filler, I just shake it up in a capped container with a shot of sweet tea and shoot it.
It is definitely worth the money if you compare the cost with multi- vitamins.
Swiss Chard, Beets, Kale, Spinach, Collards, Garlic Ginger,... all have a place in good health as well. I hear a lot of people say "I don't like those" well I bet they will like Cancer even less. People need to eat what they should instead of what we like.
Our diet has changed dramatically over the last couple years.
I grow "mostly" super food greens, and spent a good bit of time looking into the Nutritional Value of what I'm growing, before I buy Seeds.

Your choice. I don't mind overdosing on the water soluble vitamins, because that way I am assured of having the right quantities in the right relationships - as you say, my body gets rid of the excess. And vitamins are inexpensive. I mainly take them for the mineral package in them, to prevent leg cramps.

The fat soluble vitamins (ADKE) are a bit more of an issue, which is why I have had my levels of D tested, and take a sufficient amount to keep my levels in the more or less normal range. I would be much more hesitant WRT A or K, in particular, but I am having no problems with the amounts I take.

And keep in mind that the levels recommended are just those that will not result in frank symptoms of deficiency in 90% of the population: Not the correct amounts needed for optimum health. Those levels differ for each person, and change with their stage in life and immediate condition.

One concern I do have is the lack of regulation or oversight as it pertains to manufacturing. I've read a number of articles about supplements containing just traces amounts of whatever it is they're selling. I guess that's preferable to the alternative...containing ingredients not listed, which happens also.

Are you Flushing Your Vitamins Down the Toilet?
People who clean out those portable toilets know the truth about vitamin and mineral pills. Many of them report seeing the remnants of partially digested vitamin and mineral capsules at the bottom of the porta-potties, some with the name of the pill manufacturer still on them! Do you think the people who took those vitamins realize they have literally flushed their vitamin pills and money down the toilet?

Out of the millions of nutritional supplements available on the market today, how do you know that the one you are using is worth the money you are spending on it? New technology can help you make the most of your vitamin and mineral supplement purchase.

There are 3 ways to judge if your vitamin and mineral supplement is worth the money you are spending on it: the quality of the raw materials, how well your body absorbs it and the ORAC score.

First, your nutritional supplement must be produced with quality raw materials. The only requirement FDA places on supplements is that it contain at least a trace of the vitamin, mineral or herb that is named on the label. If your supplement is really cheap, you might want to investigate how much of the ingredient you want is in there. Many discount vitamin makers will just use one little leaf per bottle of supplement with fillers added to make it look good.

Second, the Physician's Desk reference says that only 10% of the nutrients in traditional vitamin and mineral pills and capsules are absorbed by your body. It must be digested first to be in a form that your body can use. Liquid nutritional supplements are an improvement over pills and capsules but they can't be completely absorbed by the body either because they go through the digestive process as well. The nutrients are not in a small enough form to be absorbed by the body but they are better than pills and capsules.

Third, the ORAC score can tell if your nutritional supplement is strong enough to do what it says it will do. ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is a "definitive test for assessing the anti-oxidant strength of potential antioxidant compounds." So, the higher the ORAC score, the stronger the antioxidant capability of the compound. To give you an example of this, fresh fruits and vegetables were given an ORAC score of 800. That means they are capable of delivering a strong antioxidant effect on the free radicals that produced by your body.

Eating fruits and vegetables with a high ORAC score may help the aging process in the human body and brain, according to studies done at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston. Whole food vitamins give you the nutrition found in food plus the convenience of being able to get all you need with just one dose.

When it comes to vitamins and minerals, you really do get what you pay for. Investigate your choice in vitamin and mineral supplements to make sure that the one you choose are of the highest quality and completely absorbable by your body.

I quit taking vitamin supplements and improved my diet, steering away from prepared store foods/fast food. Feel better, less illness...
As far as Vitamin C, there is quite a bit of locally grown citrus, satsuma primarily. I could eat those buggers all day long, but in excess they tend to have a laxative effect...

I eat some of those gummy multivitamins and my body seems to absorb them just fine. Nothing super high dose to change the color of my #1 so i guess i am doing ok!

Thanks to all for the input.

I know a complete, well-balanced diet is ideal. Unfortunately, I don't live in an ideal world. So I just do what I can. That said, I'm not going to purchase something in the hopes that is works as claimed by the company. I work too hard for my money.

I see commonality in some things taken. I'm on board with the vitamin C. I know I can dose up when I feel something coming on...and it works.

Is there a vitamin or supplement you've taken that you know has made a difference? I'm hesitant to say "for fact", but just a "seat-of-the-pants, this stuff works" kinda thing that you can feel?
