For those with AR-15 and SKS/AK-47 platforms here is an interesting crossover platform

I sitll like my AK and only wish that the AR 7.63x39mm would run steel cased like the AK. Then I might really look into a AR style 7.63x39mm.

7.62x39 ARs are well known for extractor and bolt issues...usually breakage.

If I wanted an AR platform I'd use one of the many 7.62 NATO variations like an AR10

    IMO, the question is why?

The AK is fun and until recent years a great buy for the dollar.

Why ? can you change calibers and uppers on an AK ? AK will never touch the versatility of an AR.....AK's also break.....I have been using M16's and AR15's since 1979 and have yet to have ONE part break.....

My own experiences with the M16 and M16A1 differ. Sure, things may have improved since, but I'm not betting my life on it.

Are those Stoner magazines reliable? I have no experience with them, and that extreme curve has me wondering.

A coworker uses them and says that they are reliable - the curve is dictated by the mag system used by the AR lower and the taper of the 7.62x39mm round. The mag has to stay straight through the AR mag well. Straight AR mags work, but only for a few rounds due to the taper.

Not sure if he stress tests like I do, though.

    Depends when you were in.

AKs jam same as any other FAs I've used. FA is a better criteria because cyclic is faster. The only 2 I've used that I never had a jam were the Swed K and M3.

Never said they didn't...jamming is only one of the issues I had with the old M16.

I dislike their sights and prefer optics. The triggers are OK for military applications; however, not for paper punching. I prefer their and the ergonomics of others to the AK's.
However, I have nothing against the AK as I enjoy mine.

One of the things I like about the AR platform are the option of fold-down sights and the flexibility to have them out of the way and only use them if my optics fail or to co-witness them with my optics. Confucius say, rifle with only optics soon become expensive boat anchor. ;)

X2 and no sights equals one must be too close for comfort.

As one keeps the iron sights and adds optics; if not already equipped, adding a side rail accomplishes the same for the AK.
I've read the 7.62x39 has similar ballistics to the 300BO. The claim was using a 300BO BDC scope would be effective.
Again, that was something I've read (I believe it was at lucky gunner's site) and have no personal knowledge on the subject; or beware as YMMV.

A replacement group of after market trigger components does wonders for the AK.
The addition of a lock open bolt modification solves the busted finger syndrome, while cleaning the weapon, as well.

Of course this is not meant to knock the AK as it was a Battle Field Build designed for farmers with little knowledge of mechanical devices must less any mechanical maintenance program. A well designed and functional weapon for its time.

I would like to get my hands on the American made model just to see if that much was improved. The only thing I see that I cannot add/change to a AK47 compared to the American model is the left side cocking handle.

The same applies to ARs. ;)

If you're interested in left hand charging for AKs there is or was a kit available:
AK Lightning Bolt: Left-hand side charging handle - The Firearm Blog
A search showed quite a few places sell them.

AKs are a good weapon. Unfortunately, the days of an AK for a few hundred bucks and a 1000 rounds for ~$60 are gone.
Other than the price increase, my only honest dislike of an AK is quite a few side mounts offset the line of sight from the bullet's line of flight. The bullet and line of sight meet at the range it is sighted in at.
Yes, considering the range, that is relatively unimportant and yes, I am that accuracy anal. :ROFLMAO:
