ASL users won't need be reliant on Morse code to communicate via ham radio, These Gloves Translate Sign Language Into Text or Speech
What's amazing is this is not so difficult to implement given current technology. The software is definitely easy but admit the hardware is the sticky point, the sensors have to recognize the movements of the hand(s). What is amazing is they brought it together, had the time and the resources to bring the idea to reality. Well done MIT!
I suspect that most communications difficulties can be resolved with enchiladas. It gives the hands something to do instead of signing furiously.
I was being facetious. Though, in public, ASL signers might like to switch off the audio, or take off their gloves to have a somewhat more private conversation.
This would be great if they get it perfected and can translate to other languages. The problem with any language is that there are no universal words even in sign language ,so overcoming that challenge would be fantastic .
I think that might be a software challenge, more so than a hardware challenge. The hardware just sends signals sensing changes in spatial change in glove position...the softwear does the conversion into speech. No reason why the gloves could also speak in AUSLAN (Australian Signing Language) or any number of American Indian tribal signing languages. What a boon those gloves might have been to American Indians back in the day. I don't think this needs magic gloves to translate with.
When there is not specific Sign, for a word, then basically you spell the word... In the language of the recipient...
