Kindling Cracker

Introducing the Kindling Cracker. I have never see this. It looks quite handy and I think it may be as good as the advertisement says it is. I have chopped kindling. Hatch works great and you need to really be sharp. This invention just takes a mallet/hammer. The Kindling Cracker is cast iron so I think it will hold up good. People are always saying that come SHTF we will be busy 24/7 so here is an invention that I think will help cut down on the time to make kindling.

I used a sharp double bit axe for my kindling. It took skill and care. This looks like a very useful tool.

 

I wonder if you drove a double bit axe into a stump if you could do the same thing? $99.00 is kinda high...

 

I agree that $99 is high but a 5 year warranty which means they stand behind their product. I did note that the wood he was splitting was dried. I would like to see a wet piece split also.

The double axe idea is good. You should try it and report back. I do not have a double head axe.

 

I doubt that it would work as well. Just below the edge of the cracker, the wedge spreads out much wider than on an axe. The spread is what does most of the splitting.

 

I'd love to see the jam that a nice piece of gnarly oak would do to that - probably have to burn the wood away to get it free. Not much fond of gadgets like that...

You smack that blade once, and that cast iron is like to shatter.

 

Splitting can be easily and efficiently done with leverage.

Here's a small-scale splitter:



Just scale that up a bit and you can split logs just as easily as kindling.

Use a five-foot handle, and a splitting wedge, for example.

There are large-scale examples on of lever-splitters on Youtube, I just don't have the URLs handy.

One version I'm thinking about has a weighted handle, and splits logs using body weight. The handle has a pad and rests on the shoulder. Standing up under it opens the cutter, then just dropping down with body weight on the handle splits the log.

It wouldn't take much in the way of a lever to split kindling on the Kindling Cracker. And a person could definitely make their own "Cracker" out of an old ax head welded to a piece of steel pipe with a flange on the bottom for bolts.

 

Could be worth a shot. If this helps shave off some time in the work day, then it pays for itself. As I see it, right now we have the leisure to have some tasks wait til the morrow though when SHTF most tasks will have to be done repeatedly and can't be delayed. May not be a perfect tool, however it could help and get the crafters to thinking.

I was thinking very similarly...the pieces they are putting through that are ones that would give no trouble at all to a hatchet. Twisty oak or madrone twice the size is where the issue comes.

 

Nice idea, but I don't like the ring. It limits the size and shape of the wood going through, and I see no reason for it. A wedge of wood would likely not fit, and as mentioned above, a bad grain piece would bring it to a halt in a hurry.
I may try the double bit axe version and try a splitting maul for a wider split.

 

I think the ring keeps you from hitting the wedge, and limits the device to the size of wood you can expect to split....

 

Good for some, but I don't need a nanny ring. Especially if it can cause it to hang up.

I like the idea, but I'd like to see a larger splitting blade, and no nanny ring. I think swinging a hammer is a bit safer than swinging an ax or hatchet for most folks.
