Blaze will take months to extinguish, Alberta fire official says

    How big is the fire?

On Saturday afternoon, officials said they will be fighting the overall fire, expected to reach 300,000 hectares in size by day’s end, for months to come, even if they make gains that allow the return of more than 80,000 residents to the northern Alberta city.

The fire had grown from 75 square kilometres Tuesday to 1,500 square kilometres, officials confirmed Saturday, and surrounded the city on its west and southern edges. To picture where the fire stretches: imagine the city as though it were the face of a clock; the flames surround Fort McMurray from the numbers four to 11.

High temperatures and gusting winds are helping expand the forest fire, creating a situation where the “out of control” blaze that has forced the evacuation of more than 80,000 people could possible double in size on Saturday, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said. “In no way is this fire under control,” Ms. Notley told a Saturday afternoon briefing in Edmonton. “The Fort McMurray wall of fire is still burning out of control.”

    What progress are firefighters making?

More than 1,100 firefighters are fighting the Fort McMurray fires. Ontario is sending 100 firefighters to Alberta beginning Friday.

Firefighters battled the blaze near the evacuated community of Anzac. The village remained mostly intact on Friday; 18-20 structures were destroyed.

Water bombers are playing a key role: 22 are currently deployed with more en route to the fire-affected area, including four from Quebec.

    What is the weather forecast?

The weather, with the temperature Saturday expected to rise as high as 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 Fahrenheit), was hindering efforts to fight the wildfire.

“Unless we have a significant rain event of 100 millimetres of rain, we expect to be out fighting the fire in the forested area for months to come,” Chad Morrison with Alberta Wildfires told a media briefing Saturday afternoon.

The forecast for Sunday is a mix of sun and cloud, with a few showers expected Sunday night, ending overnight. Wind from the west will range in speeds from 30 km/h to 50 km/h, and the temperature is expected to reach a high of 17 C.

Australia and Canada Should Keep an Eye on Wildfire Season Overlap, Says Report | VICE | Canada

It seems that the Australians and Canadians have an agreement to help each other. I think that is smart that they all have the same training. Currently one of Canada's helicopters they lent to the Aussies is headed back to Canada.

I have been upset that the US has not sent help yet. I have learned that it really is a simple request and takes little time but first the country needing aid uses their resources first. Canada has not requested help yet but fire officials in the US are monitoring the Fort Mac fire.

Is there a fund we can contribute to that will go to help those burnout families? Years ago I returned from work one day to find my house had become a pile of ashes. No one hurt, even my cat got out.

But the problem is fire takes everything, right down to your last sheet, towel, underwear, stick of deodorant, knife fork, dish you name it's gone. All you have left is what you're wearing and the vehicle you're driving. Be nice to take up a collection to maybe help a few of those families replace some essential possessions.

Anyone can put up a go fund me site, even if they've nothing to do with the fires.

I made a contribution. It says on the Red Cross site that all individual contributions are matched by the Canadian government.

For years being a member of the mining community myself (it's a relatively small number of people and kind of close knit) and with past experience of my own burnout, I had to do something.

Got a little bit of word Friday at work that so far the only fatality was the result of a traffic accident during the evacuations. Suncor, the company that operates the nearest oil sand operation to Ft Mac, is a customer.
