As mentioned there is such a thing as being over prepared.

At the end of the day, the reality is one cannot account for everything.

It has been said that if you take too much stuff , eventually you will be casting off things along the trail.
but the fact of the matter is .
If in deed you do discover things you can do with out , it's likely that you could trade those things for stuff you actually need.
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
Another though too is that in the event one must lighten their load then cashe'' it away for a later date.
If something you though was of marginal valuable, left 20 miles away at your previous home, and you change your mind, it's gone forever.
Having to "make do" put's more stress on what you've got ,likely reducing it's life span .
I have been making different variations of distiller for purifying water.
Each variation has it's advantages and disadvantages, but I learn from each project.
Each unit is functional and practical so with that in mind I will supply these to my family for their emergency preps.
I figure this is one way I can love them ,even if I'm not around to tell them so.

Possibly the extras others find important are not so important to those with less experience.
    such is life.

    OK ,
Let's just say that right now there is an earth quake and every thing is crashed down .
Regaining consciousness, and taking account of your self, you see that you have a severed artery in your inner right thigh.
Do you have the gear/expertise to fix it?
You've got less than a minuet to act .
    Well?

There is no 911, and even if you could call, they couldn't get to you in time.
Even if you had advanced EMT training , if you don't have the gear your good as dead.
On the other side of the coin, if you have the gear and not the training, at least it is available for some one that is trained to hand it to so they can put it to use.
Remember the movie "The day after tomorrow" and the girl had scratched her leg and suffered septic shock , at least they had the books to reference to and the presence of mind to know where to find penicillin on the ship.
Having the books may not be your cup of tea but if the knowledge is locked in your head and you are unconscious no one can help you .

The answer is simple.... You DIE... Oh well... Just One of Many, that will DIE, in any SHTF Senerio.... Where I live, (Far out in the Alaskan Bush) even if the EMS Folks left, as soon as they were called, (which is NOT likely) they are still one hour away, and the Hospital is another 1.5 Hours after the USCG Chopper, lands, or I get winched up into it.... If you are that seriously Injured, YOU DIE.... One of the consequences of living, this far out.... HOWEVER the advantages, are equally as LARGE.... This time last spring, I fell in the bathroom, and broke 3 Ribs... Knocked the wind out of me.... 8 Days later, My Lung on that side Collapsed, at 2 Am in the morning.... The USCG Chopper got here at 5AM, and I landed in Town at 6Am... sat on the Tarmac, in the local 911 Mobile, for 55 Minutes , so the local EMTs could collect their Money while checking Me out, then took a 5 minute ride to the Hospital ER, and arrived at 7Am, still DARK and Raining... 30 Minutes later the On Call Surgeon arrived and installed a Chest Tube... I survived, but lived in my Easy Chair for the next 4 months, and it was very Painful when I laughed.... Just the way things"Work" out here in the Bush....
