Mount St. Helens Earthquake Swarms a Volcano Warning Sign, USGS Says

This does not mean that it will be going off next week. But scientist think she maybe recharging. I am sure most of us remember when she blew in 1980. This is something the people in the PNW live with and may have considered. No doubt they deal with the layer of ash in their soil but have you prepped in case of eruption?

We went and saw Mt St. Helens in 2010. I had seen photos after the eruption but it was interesting to see nature reclaim but it takes time.

Here is a local site that monitors the PNW- https://www.pnsn.org/

This is my view out the backdoor of the house...... Mt Rainier in all her majesty. Us folks in the PNW, always keep her power in the back of our mind......she is over-due for an eruption. And we remember clearly the devastation from Mt St.Helens when she popped her top. Regional North-South grid lock between Seattle and Portland due to the lahars that choked rivers and disabled bridges.... ash fallout so thick you could barely see, let alone breathe..... good times.

Although Mount Rainier is an active volcano, as of 2010[update] there has not been any evidence of an imminent eruption.[39] However, an eruption could be devastating for all areas within the immediate vicinity of the volcano.[40] Mount Rainier is currently listed as a Decade Volcano, or one of the 16 volcanoes with the greatest likelihood of causing great loss of life and property if eruptive activity resumes.[41] If Mt. Rainier were to erupt as powerfully as Mount St. Helens did in its May 18, 1980 eruption, the effect would be cumulatively greater, because of the far more massive amounts of glacial ice locked on the volcano compared to Mount St. Helens[37] and the vastly more heavily populated areas surrounding Rainier.[42] Lahars from Rainier pose the most risk to life and property,[43] as many communities lie atop older lahar deposits. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), about 150,000 people live on top of old lahar deposits of Rainier.[7] Not only is there much ice atop the volcano, the volcano is also slowly being weakened by hydrothermal activity. According to Geoff Clayton, a geologist with a Washington State Geology firm, RH2 Engineering, a repeat of the Osceola mudflow would destroy Enumclaw, Orting, Kent, Auburn, Puyallup, Sumner and all of Renton.[36] Such a mudflow might also reach down the Duwamish estuary and destroy parts of downtown Seattle, and cause tsunamis in Puget Sound and Lake Washington.[44] Rainier is also capable of producing pyroclastic flows and expelling lava.[44]

Micro quakes are markers and can be used a predictors of larger events. I suspect the entire Cascade and Sierra Nevada ranges will, at some time, become active. They are in the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

Pyroclastic flows are deadly and fast. If I recall my history lessons correctly, that's what took out Pompeii in 79 AD.

The real prepper is in his car running away at 50 mph, the semi prepared is running on foot and the sheep is filming it all for facebook. Might have had problems if it hadn't stopped, and of course we would have never seen the footage.

I was stationed at Fairchild AFB (Spokane) at the time. With good luck, I landed orders to Alaska. I had to drive my car over to have it shipped up. At that time the Angel hair was all over. Thankfully, I got back OK. I shipped my wife off to be with her folks while I went to technical training. I flew out on Friday, May 16. That Sunday, the mountain blew.

I tell people my family was most fortunate to have missed the aftermath.....

Could do like the guy in Alaska did on April fools day and set some tires on fire and make everyone around think that is going to blow.
