Don't buy from APMEX's web site....go to Ebay where you will find APMEX, Adyin Coins and other reputable vendors selling their wares for sometimes a few cents cheaper than they are selling them on their own sites and without the shipping charges they charge on their sites. If what you want can't be found in their ebay store, then go to their normal web site. I

I use montana rarities. Montana Rarities Gold Silver Precious Metals Coins and like their monthly purchase plan. I've purchased from APMEX and others. Found that you must watch the premiums you pay. With the amount of counterfeits out there, reputation is critical. "Chinese gold bars with tungsten inside" comes to mind.

would you guys who buy bars please share your thinking on why silver bars? I might be on the wrong track and my thinking has been buy junk coins (pre 1960ish silver) to trade if i need too. I don't understand hauling around or keeping silver bars. Love to hear what you have to say on this.

I have purchased bars in the past but have switched to rounds. They look more like money. I don't know how people will compute the value of a used vs an uncirculated coin after the SHTF. My concern was they would discount a circulated coin based on their perception of its wear, but I could be wrong.

Here is my belief. Precious Metals (PM's) are really only for times of financial turmoil (Hyper-inflation) due to devalued currency.
PM's will be well, worth their weight in gold or silver where the fiat currency will be worthless. One might be able to pay off their mortgage with a modest amount of PM's if they don't revalue the house/land note in the new hyper inflated dollars.

Long term SHTF .. PM's are not going to be nearly as valuable as trade/barter items and skills .. PM's will lose their luster as you can't eat 'em.

After recovery .. PM's may return as money but I'd not bet that it would happen for at least a generation.

ANYWAY, PMs are a hedge. If all you have is PM's stacked high and deep .. You'll be sitting pretty until no one accepts money but only trade. Make sure your preparations for your future and those of your offspring are balanced.

Beans, beasts, bullets, barter, bullion, BOL and brains in a mixed basket.
(Food, defense, trade, fertile land and knowledge)

Bullion alone will get you in just far enough that if you don't have the rest of the basket you'll see that you are pretty much effed.

Anyway, if you are going to buy bullion, buy from a well known mint.
I prefer national coinange. American Eagles, Canadian Maples, Austrian Philharmonics. To a lessor extent Britainias, Mexican and Australian Kangaroos.

For gold it again would be American Eagles, Canadian Maples and South African Kruggerands all coins.

Then there is the 90% US silver coinage and if you are close to Canada their 80% coinage. I stick to dimes and quarters in average circulated condition. I'm not paying a premium for Mint State .. just silver content. I avoid silver dollars due to the high premium and recent fakery of Morgans and Peace dollars. Give me pocket change.

Bars? well you can get larger bars. 5, 10, 100, 1000 Troy ounces or more. But how do you know that the poured loaf bar you just bought stamped 999. Who made it? Do you trust them and the seller? Can you verify it's silver and not lead?

Governments hate it when some one counterfeits the coinage produced by their mints and goes after them with fervor. I think I'll stick with national mints. Otherwise .. it's buyer beware.

Stagecoach bars are up to 28 on Ebay and some guys are asking up to 56 dollars for them and getting it.

I am upside down in mine so I might sell them and buy back rounds. Thought about asking $370 for 10 and hope someone bites.

My personal advise (what I do ) I figure that not many are going to trust every one to be honest post SHTF,so trading in smaller portions of precious metals might seem a bit safer than the more costly materials.
I buy 1/10 oz and one oz silver and several hundred lbs of lead, and a few hundred lbs of copper.
Most easy recognizable and manageable .
Besides PMs there are a lot of other things one might consider holding for barter ,post SHTF .
Any thing you may need, others will need as well. Diapers and TP and a host of other consumables .

Going the pre 64 coin route is a sound approach, no question. If it comes to BO, it makes little difference, the weight will be the limiting factor come thinking of the bulk volume, with the edge going to bars, no matter what size, simply because there's no alloying involved. Post apocalypse, coins will actually have the advantage you are talking about for small items sorta like (par ex.) a couple tomatoes. In my case, and maybe mine alone, bar will do fine for bulk trading. For example, I might trade for a truck load of tomatoes,. then part them out --

I've been using APMEX for 15 years now with no problems. Silver has a bigger potential upside, but gole is a lot more portable when you have to bug out.

Gold is something you stash at your BOL or other secure location...it is nothing but dead weight when actually bugging out. Silver coins would be more appropriate for any trading/bribing you might have to do while travelling IMO.

I'm sure the goblins are looking forward to people bugging out with gold tho...more value per weight fer sure.

for me there are two approaches.
    1) SHFT silver is more tradeable, I just can get the whole gold thing, sorry. Coins will mean something for awhile but eventually won't be worth much in an interim period.and
    2) if there is no SHFT then I think you need to know how to trade it back.

I get silver as it has multiple uses and is highly undervalued atm (just my opinon) Gold I just don't get the value of it other than people think its valuable and that can readily change.

To know why gold is important all you have to do is remember the golden rule:
He who has the gold makes the rules.

They are selling at spot because they are sitting on a giant pile and are afraid it will go lower.

I have always had a problem with rules and authoritaeh.

Then the obvious answer is to become the authority and make the rules.
