Another factor to keep in mind is that water is going to offer a lot more resistance to motion than a car or truck will experience...

200sqft of panels isn't all that much space.

    2000 - used motor (40horse)
    6500 - 26 250 watt solar panels (cheap ones!)
    10,000 - 100 group 27 batteries
+ charge controllers, mounting hardware, motor controller, cabling...and soon $30,000 is looking like a bargain.

Oh, yes, it's called chlorine. Deadly, forms acid with the moisture in your lungs and directly you have no more lungs.

Ya know, I really hate shooting down the idea, but when you crunch the numbers, even loosely, it's not so good an idea....sorry :(

One other thing that you MUST understand is the Coupling Efficency of your expended Motion Energy, in to the medium of transport... For Vehicle on ground, with wheels, the Coupling Efficency ig very HIGH.... For a vessel, in water, using a propeller, the Efficency is realitively LOW..... Also the medium t hat surrounds the two is totally different, water vs air resistance.

Theses are not a pipe dream, they are active ferries.
These are hybrids, and computer/ hydraulic controlled. Adds @40 fuel efficiency.
There was a documentary a few years ago, featuring a huge solar only ship, but it was flat topped, and about the size of a football field.

They seem to be carrying a lot more weight than what i'm expecting. 180 people vs 4.

They are also riding the very top edge of efficiency. And using the finest material available. And it is still a hybrid.

my hull will not be as efficient as theirs for sure. but much smaller.

I could just go slow, lol

You will be slow, but you may also be at the mercy of the wind, like a woodchip on the water.

No sir, more sail area, to push you off course.[deadhorse]

I was thinking mainly to lift up at night to gather energy, wouldn't work while in motion.

I've read of another method, that uses water currents to charge batteries of an anchored boat. But none of these methods is very efficient, and none of them are cheap. Being green is not cheap, or everyone would do it.
Good luck sir, but i doubt the game is worth the candle.

doesn't seem like its all that worth it. maybe on a bigger, more efficient and physically larger boat.

Don't know all the modern facts, but my uncle was on the old Saratoga during WW II and as a kid I heard him say that a 250 hp tug could move it at about 3 knots in no wind, but doing 30 knots they used about 250,000 hp. Don't remember all the details, but he said that for a displacement hull. there was a reason for that huge bow wave and beautiful wake and waves the hull created and all of the energy used to create them had to come from somewhere. What power would be needed to move the houseboat at 4 to 5 mph? Used to ride in 20 foot boats with 5 hp Evinrudes as a kid and they did very well at 5 to 6 mph.

The Manatee Center in Homosassa Springs, FL has a pontoon boat with an electric outboard to ferry visitors. Seems I remember it having about 2 dozen batteries. They ran it about 10 minutes to the habitat, then back after an hour where it was plugged in until the next group was ready. It made me think about putting a golf cart motor on an outboard (minus the engine).

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

From the get-go, an electric-only boat is an invitation to disaster. Out on the open ocean, you can run into a week of bad weather without even half-trying. Weather where the engine has to keep running 24-7 if you want to keep the boat right side up.

And as sure as God made fish relatively waterproof, even a houseboat can run into rough weather--and with it's large "sail area" even a modest breeze can put one twenty miles off-shore when a little coastal cruise was all the skipper had in mind.

Internal combustion engines offer a tremendous power density in the fuel tank, and dependable operation for weeks at a time.

On the water, it's best to stick with well-tested, rugged, and dependable equipment.

It will definitely help keep your lungs above the water.
