Just checking to see if anybody knows a reputable seed dealer I can get some fresh Moringa seed from. I had picked some up last winter but they all failed to germinate, as did a lot of other seed bought from the same seedsman.

I had the same problem, no germination, 100's of seeds, let me know if you find a good dealer.

I ordered some form amazon and they germinated fine. You have to soak them in a very damp paper towel in a plastic bag then plant them once they sprout.

OK, I'll give it another try, thanks for the tip as my seeds came with instructions to soak overnight and then plant them an 1" deep and keep them watered. Now I see other info on how it is supposed to be done.

I bought 1,000 seeds from Amazon and they grow like crazy. The winter killed them off,I thought, but they all came back again and I planted 3 in the ground last weekend. The seeds I purchased have an 80% or better germination rate.In Arizona you can get these to thrive and after the 2nd year they are drought tolerant and don't have to water them. There are a couple people that have grown them there with great success!

The Moringa can't handle the cold down. I plan to cut them down every year and let Passion, Grapes, rasberries,... grow on the old stumps and harvest the leaves.

Moringa grows here like a weed. I've never shipped any seeds via mail. But, I would imagine it would be okay to do so? If so, I can get some here (Cambodia) and send them to you at no charge to you.

By the way, I recently placed a huge order with a company called Johnny's Seeds, in the US. An Australian who used to dirt farm in Cambodia used to deal with them exclusively. I won't know for a while, but will be happy to let others know how seeds from that company germinate.

Johnny's seeds is OK, I think they are owned by one of the big conglomerates, like Burpees, people talk bad about them but I've never had a problem, other than they are generally not heirloom seeds.

I've never had a problem with Johnny seed either.

Just an FYI hybrids are not as ll bad and all heirlooms are not necessarily good. All heirloom's are typically hybrids that were vigorous in a particular area under certain growing conditions. It's the GMO seeds you don't want.

I never get stuck on hybrids

As i understand it, hybrids do not breed true. The seeds will produce one of the breeds used to create the hybrid. Heirlooms breed true to form.

not true Kellory, you have to know your hybrids. how do you think we got heirlooms, someone crossed their plants for a more hardy variety. People crossed their veggies with other veggies and those were the original hybrids. Seeds that survived were hardy and or prolific. Those are now called 'heirloom' seeds. Heirloom is just another trendy term.

You are talking about very specialized hybrids that are grown in ag companies and they breed for specific traits not hardiness in a local area. Some of the hybridization done by seed companies use very specialized and sterile techniques to grow a particular characteristic of plant. Once a plant is past the F2 or F3 stage of this kind of hybridization it usually breeds true.

Again I would not shy away from many hybrids, use the ones that have been around for years. The golden jubilee tomato is a good example and it seeds itself, its a prolific yellow, tasty tomato.

Hybrid vs. GMO vs. Heirloom - Bonnie Plants

    "Heirloom Plants
Heirlooms come from seed that has been handed down for generations in a particular region or area, hand-selected by gardeners for a special trait. Heirloom vegetables are open-pollinated, which means they’re pollinated by insects or wind without human intervention. How experts define heirlooms can vary, but typically they are at least 50 years old, and are often pre-WWII varieties. In addition, they tend to remain stable in their characteristics from one year to the next."

    "Hybrid Plants
A hybrid vegetable is created when plant breeders intentionally cross-pollinate two different varieties of a plant, aiming to produce an offspring, or hybrid, that contains the best traits of each of the parents. Cross-pollination is a natural process that occurs within members of the same plant species.

In hybridization, pollination is carefully controlled to ensure that the right plants are crossed to achieve the desired combination of characteristics, such as bigger size or better disease resistance. The process of developing a hybrid typically requires many years."

Just because Bonnie plants puts it like that doesn't mean its true, they are a commercial farm and I have been to several of their growing area's... its impressive in size and scope but they don't know everything.

    just saying
