A Growing Vigilante Group Targets U.S. Mosques

The Soldiers of Odin held a "patrol" at a Denver-area mosque, escalating their intimidation tactics against Muslims

An anti-Muslim vigilante group with roots in Europe is now targeting mosques in the United States with “patrols” meant to curb Islamic extremism and radicalism. Despite the group’s desire to project an image of peaceful crime fighters, however, critics warn against their rise and influence as they prey on Americans who are fearful of refugees and terrorists.

The Soldiers of Odin (SOO) deployed five members of its group to a mosque in the Denver suburb of Northglenn last Saturday to support the “right to free speech” of a lone protester who frequently demonstrates in front of the building. The protester claimed the mosque was full of Islamic extremists, so the group went on a “fact-finding/recon mission,” as they call it. Four members entered the mosque and questioned the imam, asking about the mosque’s stance on Sharia Law and whether the congregation collaborates with radical jihadi groups. One person stood guard outside.

No....not so new.....There is a home grown American precedent....I do believe they wore bed sheets, flour sacks and were prone to displaying burning roman crosses...just that this mob are associated with a different deity.

If there were moderate Muslims in that congregation, there are probably some that are now more susceptible to recruitment to Muslim trouble makers of a comparable level of idiotic commitment as the nordic SODs (Sons of Dicks).

Not so sure about this either.

Unless those Muslims are really causing trouble and the law won't do anything, the SOO are only stirring the pot. We have enough problems.

Question being, do they follow the teachings of Muhammad and the writings in the Koran or not? Are they then, not all subject to recruitment?

Look up Islamization. It is happening in Europe. It is happening here. This is what ISIS is doing, but on a more violent scale. They do not believe in live and let live, and they are not your brother.

I have seen no evidence that they (Muslims) can assimilate into Western society any more than the Palestinians could assimilate into Israeli society.

@Don't " if they really want to jump into the Sh.. they would have travelled to Min., Detroit or south Cal..."
Or, they just might be what they said they are - against radicalism - and their intent is to protect their home which is Denver, let Detroit and especially Southern Cal protect themselves. So, if that is true then they DON'T want to jump into the muck...

@chelloveck "If there were moderate Muslims in that congregation, there are probably some that are more now susceptible to recruitment to Muslim trouble makers of a comparable level of idiotic commitment as the nordic SODs (Sons of Dicks)."
Hmmm...maybe or maybe the Muslim community already knows that they are not trusted and watched by everyone anyway. So, I kind of doubt something as mild and open as this would lead someone to terrorism...unless they already were leaning in that direction. There is a part of me that likes this. I mean, a neighborhood watch sort of thing that really could work both ways: people of the neighborhood get the true story about what is happening behind those walls (with no political spin or police threats) and the Iman gets someone in the neighborhood outside of the police he can turn to for help. In this country, biker gangs are not only trouble makers and criminals but they also are renown for providing security at local events and even concerts, charity events, etc. - even the infamous Hells Angels.

You seemed to be seeing this as a pure hate group but it appears that the only thing they hate is radicalism (at least that we know of at this point) and if that is the case then most of us could join this club, certainly me and from what I have read of your posts, certainly you. Shouldn't we give the SOO as well as the Muslims of that Mosque the benefit of a doubt before we judge them? The SOO did.

Another point - this is what happens when people feel they are not being protected and they don't trust their government to do what's in their best interest and if the law can't protect them then they will protect themselves and those close to them. Let's face it, they cannot put a policeman on every corner but yet they impede the 2nd Amendment every chance they get.

Having said this, maybe these yahoos are a hate group but because they are bikers (with a very cool name!) we shouldn't put our own words in their mouths or our thoughts into their heads. I would be the first to speak out against them but what I read seems to say the Iman and the SOO handled things in a very amenable manner. Maybe the Iman was glad someone finally came forward and asked the question, "Hey! Are you ragheads radicals because we don't abide radicals!" "No, this is a simple place of worship. And, we don't abide radicals either." Really? Uh...okay. Good. We are into Freedom of Religion so if any SOB gives you all problems tell'em SOO will be having a word." "Thank you! Blessings of Allah on you!" "Yeah...Odin's blessings on you...Peace brother!" "Peace."

I have always assumed that you supported the Constitution? So, people in this country can worship as they please...or should we rewrite the 1st Amendment to state "no law impeding the free exercise of religion"...except Islam?

Radicals are radicals. How about Jews? They had LOTS of radical groups in the beginning and yes, they bomb buses and did lots of nasty things. What about the Jesuits and the Catholics? Or, cannot we go there because they're Christian... I don't like religion and I especially hate organized religion. I'm a big believer in God but just had a belly full of organized religion's hypocrisy.

Any ideology or religion can, and does, breed these sort of bastards. But, you cannot blame all the Muslims of the world for what a few do. There are 1 Billion Muslims in the world so I would think that if all of them truly were against us...we would know it.

Worship peacefully and respect the Constitution of the United States. Check and see if the religion of peace is in line with our constitution and bill of rights. If you believe that peaceful coexistence is going to work here any better than it does in Israel, Syria, Iraq, Iran, India or Pakistan then I'd like to hear how.

I agree there are probably some in the Muslim faith who are accepting of people eating pork, the open celebration of other religious holidays other than Muslim, but as I have said; it doesn't seem to work anywhere else in the world.

This group in one incarnation or another has been around for decades in the US. It was very active in the 80's and as with many of these movements, after the leader Robert Mathews was killed in a standoff with ATF agents, it went underground but continued to put out supporting propaganda and recruiting. It was called the "Order" and it's members were all Odinists. I suspect this latest incarnation is just a new offshoot of the old.

    The Order

    The Order

The Order was the most violent and notorious domestic terrorist group of the 1980s. Founded in 1983 by Robert J. Mathews, a recruiter for the neo-Nazi National Alliance and an activist in the Nazi-like and "Identity"-affiliated group Aryan Nations, The Order (also known as Bruders Schweigen, or Silent Brotherhood) drew its members from the National Alliance, Aryan Nations, and various Klan splinter groups. As a blueprint for its "revolution," The Order relied upon William Pierce's novel The Turner Diaries (see below), and many of the crimes for which Order members were convicted resembled terrorist acts described in the book.

@chelloveck tends to get fast and loose with the stereotypes. Not all groups of American white folk are KKK wannabes nor do all Aussies fornicate with wallabies.

Sorry, but I gotta disagree to a point. This country was founded on the premise that we have the freedom and liberty to do our own thing...as long as it does not infringe upon the liberties of others. So while yea, they need to obey our laws and should at least learn the language, there is no requirement to assimilate culturally. What we did to native Americans...trying to force them to adopt our culture...was wrong...period...and I am not about to condone continuing that failed experiment on others...even haji.

And where did I say that all groups of American white folk are KKK wannabes????

When did "A homegrown precedent" become Americans at large??? If anything, the comparison with the KKK was perhaps a little unfair to SOO, in so far as SOO activists haven't, to my knowledge, necktied or burnt to death anyone ....yet.

Agreed! The USA is not The Borg. Any attempt at compulsory assimilation is pointless and counter productive. People will, over time choose of their own volition which parts of The American Dream that suits them best. A hot dog is just a hot dog at a baseball game....regardless of whether the wiener is halal, kosher or otherwise.....so long as it is smothered in mustard. ;)

As far as I am concerned, as an Australian, the necessity of speaking English is a matter of practicality, rather than of national identity and affiliation. For those unable to speak English, or read it, there are ways and means of enabling adequate communications between English and non-English speaking citizens and residents.

There are, but it is the burden of fhe one who needs it, not a burden of mine to supply it. You need a translator, you find one, you pay the cost.

An excellent incentive for learning the "official" language of commerce and law, as it is of the blind to learn braille...but many people function adequately who are functional illiterates and who do not speak the official language of the country that they reside within. Functioning adequately, does not mean that their inability to speak the language is not a disadvantage.

I think the main point of irritation with some Anglophonic folk in America and Australia is when folk speak, in a public space in a "foreign" language in preference to English. (of course in the Francophonic provinces, English is that damned foreign language) The issue as I see it is that some folk are prone to harrumphing "patriotic" concerns about national identity, ,when the actual issue is a matter of etiquette in public places.

No, i don't care a wit if someone speaks in thier own language, but when they need something, want something, have destroyed something, are accused of a crime, have thier music to break glass loud level, peeling out on the street for the smoke cloud at midnight, let thier dogs wander the neighborhood in violation of the law, let same dogs bark all night, park on your lawn, or "borrow" anything not nailed down, then suddenly it's no habla de Englase" no matter they got along "fine without it" last week.
They use it as a shield against responsibility for their own actions.

May be proffered as an excuse.....but like ignorance of the law, regardless of one's knowledge of the language within which it is written, it is no defence: As they may discover if convicted of breaking the law. Unfortunately, the populations of correctional facilities in the US are often segmented along ethnic lines....so don't hold your breath for much melding there. ;)

Try to get a pilots license in the US or in 'stralia. You are required to speak English. And the point is that people who emigrate to the US become 'mercans. They have always assimilated into our culture. My German Ggranparents refused to allow their children to speak German. They had to learn English. When a people come here, especially illegally, and demand that we as a nation conform to their standards and ideals, well that's where the line gets drawn. There used to be a bumper sticker popular in the US. "America: Love it or Leave it!!"

**move to Australia, they don't care. Their countries already a toilet, what's a few more turds.
