Making (up) History- The first woman to be nominated for President

Hillary Clinton said she was going to take a few days to contemplate the history that had been made. And the media shouted the headlines, "First Woman to be a Presidential Nominee". For the first time in history a woman has been nominated by her party as their nominee for president of the US.

Well, as is usually the case, these so-called journalists failed to do any fact checking and certainly don't know their political history.

    Meet Victoria Woodhull;

In 1872, 136 years before Clinton would make her first run for the oval office in 2008, Victoria Woodhull ran for president on the ticket of the Equal Rights Party. Woodhull called for reform on all levels of government and championed equal rights for women, including suffrage.

Strengthening her campaign, Woodhull selected Frederick Douglass — an abolitionist, former slave and prolific writer — to be her running mate.

Though Douglass technically had the right to vote under the 15th Amendment of 1870, Woodhull did not. Women’s suffrage would not be realized for some 50 years, as the 19th Amendment was not ratified until 1920.

Meet Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president

In 1872, Woodhull was the first female to run for President of the United States. An activist for women's rights and labor reforms, Woodhull was also an advocate of free love, by which she meant the freedom to marry, divorce, and bear children without government interference

At her peak of political activity in the early 1870s, Woodhull is best known as the first woman candidate for the United States presidency, which she ran for in 1872 from the Equal Rights Party, supporting women's suffrage and equal rights. Her arrest on obscenity charges a few days before the election for publishing an account of the alleged adulterous affair between the prominent minister Henry Ward Beecher and Elizabeth Tilton added to the sensational coverage of her candidacy. She did not receive any electoral votes, and there is conflicting evidence about popular votes.

Just more lies from Queen Hillary and more mooning and pandering from the "free press".

Thank you @Minuteman for posting that. Hillarious can't tell truth from fiction in her own life so why should she bother with real history!

Im gonna say this, as a woman I would like to see a female president one day if 1) she is qualified 2) is a good leader and 3) can tell the truth once in a while. Hillarious doesn't fit this mold at all. Anyone who would sell out our troops and then say 'I was sleeping, so I didn't know' does not qualify as a good leader in my book

our 1st non white male leader has been a disaster.

I would like to see a Native American President, provided they are qualified, competent, and honest. Unfortunately those qualities are in short supply among prostiticians.

I would like to see an atheist POTUS, who didn't have to disguise themselves as a theist of any persuasion, to have a chance of being elected. Sadly Donald Drumpf is the closest non theist pretender contender to that throne. ;)

What Hillary Clinton was actually quoted as saying....
    Embolding and underlining mine.

At the time of Victoria Woodhull's quixotic tilt at the Presidency, Woodhull was not a candidate for a "major (political) party" (Major parties at the time of the 1872 Presidential election included The Republican Party, The Liberal Republican Party, The Democratic party, and the labor Reform Party United States presidential election, 1872 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ). Hillary did not claim to be the first female candidate for POTUS, nor did she claim to be the first female party nominee for POTUS. Read what she is actually quoted as saying, not what you imagined she said.....the qualifier "major party" would seem to be apt to her claim.

Hillary Clinton's claim, as far as I have ascertained, is factually correct, assuming that there is no future impediment to Hillary's swearing in as President if elected.

As bold, and gutsy, and admirable as Victoria Woodhull's bid for election as POTUS was at the time, her bid could be better described as a political stunt, more so than as a serious contention for an office that she could not have been elected appointed to legally (Constitutionally, even if elected, Woodhull could not have been appointed to the office of Article Two of the United States Constitution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia POTUS).

Unless you can demonstrate that the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Rights_Party_(United_States) was a major political party in the same league as The Republican Party or The Democratic party, then your boosting of the Victoria Woodhull narrative fails, by falling within fallacy of false equivalency.

If anything Minuteman, you have made an hysterical mountain out of an unhistorical molehill.

Chell is correct...Clinton is careful with her words, as usual. That bit of words was probably edited and vetted for months, if not years.

Or, perhaps she was just saying what is factually accurate, is that so terrible?....are you suggesting that being careless of one's words is a good thing???

Hillary can't win with some ......if she is careful of the words that she uses....that is somehow portrayed as evidence of scheming and conniving; if she is careless of the words that she uses, then she is described as stupid or dishonest (or more likely....both).

To Hillary's detractors, I suspect that they have enthusiastically, (but carelessly) grasped at the Victoria Woodhull "straw", ignoring what Hillary actually said, and hoping that the general population will do less of a job of fact checking, than her detractors themselves have evidently done.

And so, Hillary is to be pilloried, in this instance as a liar because of some of the media's sloppy journalism? Hang her for what she actually said and claimed, not on what the media purport that she had said or claimed.

Mooning and pandering is what much of the "free press" does, generally for the constituency (right or left) that is willing to consume the bilge that they produce....

I guess the "free media" could spend editorial space quibbling and splitting hairs over bits of historical trivia....but sensationalism, and glib, if not strictly accurate headlines tend to draw the revenue earning punters, more so than those with a bent for obsessive historical accuracy.

Care full of your words isn't a bad characteristic. Having said that careful words does not make n you a good communicator. She is a word smith, a dishonest wordsmith but still only a wordsmith.

Hillary is not a good communicator. A good communicator actually listens to others and the uses wordsmith in in such a way that most of the people listen hear the same thing.

E.g. the difference between a cowboy, and a rancher. Or the difference between a manager and a leader.

Chelly, when a local named mary jo Kilroy ran for local office, her bumper stickers had the added logo of a man peeking over a wall, and the Kilroy "was here" tagline. She was not a part of that family, regardless of her name. She was accused of Stolen Valor as a result, because she traded on another's name, and failed to set the record straight. It was never determined (that i am aware of) who's bright idea that was, but it sank any chance of hers in that election. People hot very hostile indeed, when the truth came out. That symbol and tagline is the marker chosen for ALL US servicemen for world war 1. It is NOT OK to allow a falsehood to be attached to any campaign.
