Instead of lurking in several forums I decided to choose one and make some friends! For money, I work in a gold mine. For fun, I am in my third year of raising/running sled dogs and learning to be a competent musher. I live with my wife and eight dogs outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. We are slowly developing an off grid property and I'm always interested in gaining knowledge.
@HOLLIGANS I have always wanted to ask this of a real musher... What do you say/yell at the dogs to get them going? Is it really 'MUSH!'? I am sure it ain't 'Giddyup!'...
Hi Bandit99 and thanks to all for the welcome. The go command is not "Mush". Some say it never was, but I've seen it used in some very old books. What I say is "Alright". I think most people say "Hike". If you are training dogs that don't know any words yet, you can use any word you want, so long as they learn what it is that you want them to do upon hearing the word.
Welcome to our Monkey Tree, from another Alaskan Bush couple.... We live on the southeastern corner of Glacier Bay National Park, in Excursion Inlet, Alaska.... Lots of Great information here in our forums.... have a good look around, and meet some of the Monkeys...
Hello @HOOLIGANS we are glad that you chose the monkey. Those are beautiful dogs in your picture. Welcome to the Monkey. If you need help, give a shout, the members are quite helpful here.
Welcome to the site, Hooligans! I hope that you enjoy it! Sounds like you will be able to teach us some stuff too!
