How to stop a truck

  1. Shoot fewer well placed larger rounds and hopefully K.O. the engine or driver?

  2. Throw boxes of smaller bullets, hope one finds something the driver cant live with out?

I guess this could be broken down into 3 scenarios:
1 like in Paris where you are out and about and some one starts running people over, so your only options are a pistol.
Do you carry something big that only holds a few rounds like a super redhawk, S&W X frame, desert eagle. Or something that just holds a ton of smaller ammo like one of those real high cap 9mm, 40 or 5.7x28 pistols that holds a box of bullets.
2 you are driving in your car and a truck starts smashing through traffic. Then its reasonable to assume you could have a long gun. Same dilemma AR-15 that holds a ton of ammo or a P90 (if you are willing to go the NFA route) or PS90 that hold a case of ammo or something big that holds less ammo like an M1A or Garand. Or compromise with an AK.
3 How would you defend you house or business from a car or truck ramming attack?
The only thing that would limit this would be your budget, immigination, NFA laws.
For example I have beach barricades made from scrap metal that I weld additional scrap/spikes to and I can chain or cable them all together. I keep these kind of hidden in the back yard, for now.

All of these have happened some where.
Even in my little $#!+ hole town an illegal stole a car and used it to ram through the front of my friendly neighborhood gun, hardware, farm supply store to steal their guns and ammo. I guess he forgot he wasn't in mexico anymore.
Just a few years ago a tractor trailer went on a rampage on a cali highway, so due to their gun free zone utopia laws people are almost helpless in that situation.

I think you should make it harder for law abiding citizens to buy a truck. That would probably prevent all criminal and terrorist truck violence.

In situations #1 & 2, you are not going to stop a speeding truck with a rifle or pistol of any size unless you can get off a very, very lucky shot. And heroic dreams of shooting up the engine, or a tire, or the driver, happens in the movies a lot more than it happens in the real world.

In situation #3, the only way to defend a home against a heavy speeding truck is if you plan ahead and put up heavy barriers. But the likelihood of someone ramming your house with a truck is just below being hit by an asteroid. One has to balance the risk with the money, effort, and time required to mitigate the risk. YMMV, but there are a million other things I'm more worried about than a truck crashing through my living room.

Tires, radiator, engine...I suppose I would empty my Glock in the engine since it is a larger target if I was more than 35 yards and/or the angle was bad on the driver. If I was inside 35 yards (or considering how I shot today 25-30 yards) I would put all 15 rounds through driver or passenger door, maybe a few for a headshot if I had one. They priority is to disable the vehicle which you can do by wounding driver also, bleed him out.

IF....and that's a big if, I can get a shot at the air tanks, that would quickly stop a large truck with air brakes. Otherwise, what most folks typically carry might damage the driver, but that's still no guarantee the truck will stop in a reasonable distance.

Deep ditches hopefully will stop vehicular assaults on my residence :)

.44 mag & up for pistols to be able to bust a block, and rifles .30 & up, the bigger the brass capacity, the better. If you have smaller less powerful arms, then I would go for the driver.

Automobile/truck engines are quite hard to stop and can cover lots of ground with their guts spilling on to the highway/dirt road/ etc, Always go for the driver, lots of lead heading in the right direction is better than BIG lead trying to make a kill shot. However, with that said, Ma Duce is a real show stopper.;)

Those are brake chambers, not the same as the air tanks :) Those contain spring brakes, which apply the brakes if air pressure is lost to the main system.

and a diaphragm contains the air pressure from the main system and can be punctured and fail.
I believe that these while still small targets can be seen from behind the truck while it's driving away or backing towards.
I think I'd have more time to hit the brake chamber as opposed to the main tank as it's driving by.

Or we could just use @DKR 's suggestion and just blow the whole truck up ;)

That is what I would like to use too.
But, 2 things, the back blast can kind of suck. By suck I mean easily kill someone.
But the launcher is $7,000 to $8,000 and the ammo is a little hard to find but, you may be able to get it in new mexico. I hear there is a dealer out in the western part of NM that has 7 ammo, several hundred dollars per shot not counting the tax stamp.
Actually you would be surprised how little damage those things do. Its nothing like in the moves. But they will take out a truck engine.

For your house or business I am not really thinking a large tractor trailer will be used against a residence or business, more like the car ramming smash and grab attack on the local gun and farm store where I live. Say SHTF and some one doesn't have a gun or tools or know how, just hunger and a car with some gas in it and good intel saying your house is the only one that still has food and water.

Well, there are alternatives to dealing with folks trying to raid the old homestead...

Of course, that assumes you still have at least some gasoline....

An "air gun" isn't a bad idea.

i think my ruger 357 mag with fmj bullets would work to stop a truck engine or my ruger 44 mag with fmj would do it too

Even if you penetrate the engine block, that vehicle isn't going to immediately stop. Your best chance of stopping a truck or even a car that is already speeding into the area (and the odds of succeeding are long) is to try to get to the side and put rounds into the driver as he passes, and you best have jacketed rounds of a decent caliber, preferably from a long gun.

Ganado's solution is a winner...I'd love to see LOTS of demonstrations of the technique. ;)

For those wanting to defend their home from a ramming vehicle or to just slow their approach to your AO, think defensive landscaping. Here are a couple of examples:
    • Concrete Planters filled with earth and decorative plants are a popular method of stopping vehicles as they are both aesthetically pleasing and very effective if they are large enough.
    • Boulders are some of the most effective objects for stopping vehicles, as long as they are as large and heavy as possible, while also being attractive and inconspicuous.
    • Ditches are an inexpensive and very effective way to control vehicles, the deeper and wider they are, the more vehicles they will be able to stop. A vehicle stopping ditch should have its "entrance" (the side from which vehicles approach)sloping with a near vertical "exit" side.
