Ketchikan police: Woman who drove husband's body around for days didn't break any laws

Around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, police received a third-party call from the area of the Potlatch Bar. When they arrived on scene, officers discovered an aluminum transport casket with the body of a 78-year-old man inside, according to police Chief Bengaard.

The man had died from natural causes over the weekend on Prince of Wales Island, and his wife brought the body to Ketchikan, Bengaard said in a phone interview Wednesday afternoon.

"The body was in that and supposed to be destined for the mortuary, but for some reason she decided to not go directly to the mortuary and had been driving around with him for a couple days," Bengaard said. " … My understanding is kind of — leading up to the events of the last couple days — there's been a rolling wake or viewing. It was pointed out to me that, evidently, she had stopped at a couple of the canneries and got ice and filled the bed of the truck with ice to keep the body chilled."

" … You can't make this stuff up," Bengaard added.

The wife did not break any laws that Bengaard was aware of.

Does Alaska make people strange?
Or, do strange people just move to Alaska?

 

I think its both, as I have known some wayyyyy out there people there.
There was this guy who had a dog he used to take for rides and to the park and the store.
Oh and the dog was stuffed had died years earlier yet owner acted as if he was still here.

To me there is no real problem here?

Neither were hurting anyone that I could see... so?

strange? yep... but again... not hurting anyone so...

 

I keep thinking I remember a story about a woman who put her dead husband in the chest freezer because she couldn't afford to pay for a funeral and burial. He'd been in there for a few years before anyone discovered him.

Or maybe that was in a book I read. Crap I can't remember. Either way, hey whatever works!

 

Perhaps she needed a few... such things can be very traumatic...

where you had someone to sorta watch your back, talk with, and they were always there n such now you're alone...

 

New reality show.

 

Before one of my grandfathers passed away, it seems he extracted promises from a few of his sons and grandsons. He died in the hospital of cancer spread throughout his body and eating him up. He had been known for bending his elbow with a high octane drink in his hand. Bottom line he grabbed my arm with an unbelievable painful vise grip and asked me if I was armed. I told him the truth, that I was not. He told me that the next time I came visit him to bring a gun. When asked why he swore at me and made promise I would. I never returned to the hospital while he was still alive. At his funeral I was wearing a shoulder holster under my suit coat and carrying my 9mm Browning Highpower fully loaded and ready to go. It was noticed by a few who asked about it and were told why I had it. No further questions were asked even by the Leos present. It seem a few other promises were extracted. One son had two bottles of Wild Turkey whiskey, one of which went in the casket in his left hand. The other bottle was passed around among the men (sorry ladies .... you were not included in this) and who were expected to take a stiff drink and speak up with an anecdotal story about him. Many of these brought us to tears. I was included in this and more or less gave them a laugh as to why I was armed, and opened my jacket to show them. Another spoke up and said well I might as well do this now and he came up with a razor sharp K-bar Marine fighting knife which my Grandpa had requested be put in his right hand, because he figured if he was sent to Hell he wanted to be prepared to deal with the Devil, and swore he would do his best to take the head and tail of that *^%$%*. All of this kicked off when the funeral was opened up to anyone who had anything to say about Grandpa. All in all it was a hoot. He would have enjoyed it, to include all the raised eyebrows and shock of a few.

 

I had a cousin several times removed (usually from bars in the wee hours) that was an incredibly heavy drinker.....mostly hard liquor. He said just before he died that he wanted to be cremated. They got him over to the mortuary and fired him up as usual. He burned for 3 days!! The mortuary refused any other of his relatives.

All I can say is............bizarre!!

 

Considering all the other things going on in the world, this is pretty tame by comparison.

 

3 days? They must a put him on slow-roast.
