Love to fish but are sick of all the gear? Maybe you should consider a Tankara Fly Fishing pole. This is an interesting rod, it collapses and is a simplified fly fishing rod, without the reel. Here is some information, I have not seen one but I was wondering if any monkeys have experience or knowledge of the Tenkara.

This gentleman has great videos explaining the ease of Tenkara. It really is a great rod that would easily fit into a pack.

Interesting, but 90% of the places I flyfish, this would not work.

Small western streams are brush chocked, hence my choice is a 7 foot 6 inch 4 wt Sage rod.

Short casts including roll casts with limited back casting.

This short rod also works for those 30ft casts across a beaver pond with zero brush around.

If I am fishing the San Jaun or Lees Ferry with the chance of big fish, a reel with a good drag and lots of backing to let the big fish run. In these cases I use my 9ft 5wt where cast can be 50+ feet

It would be fun to try in the right situation.

My Sage 7.6 4wt is 24 inches long

I've seen an outdoors show dedicated to Tenkara fishing. They were on tiny streams and the Tenkara rods did better than short, delicate, standard fly rods! Looked fun! Trust the Japanese to come up with the most elegant, simplest way to accomplish anything. :)

I go better that that! If you want to learn THE best fly fishing technique ever, for every type of water you could ever run into, Try Spey Rod's I use a 4wt 9'6 Spey for most trout fishing, A 6wt 12'6'' for most big water trout, and small steel head, and I use a 10wt 14'6' for heavy Salmon/Steel Head. It takes a little bit of learning, but once mastered, the Spey Rod is king of fishing in challenging water The neat thing is the big Spey rod also works really well as a boat rod for Salmon fishing when running Hearing or Sardines as well as KwikFish or other lures. the rod is nice and supple and so very sensitive, just the thing for a rally light strike! On fly's you cannot beat the sensitivity of a good spey rod. I use T.F.O rods exclusively, and have sold all my traditional Fly Rods! GO on the tube's and watch some videos!

Exactly, that was my thought. Compact, light, no reel. I preppers dream. I have fish line, hooks and stuff in my pack and would have to fashion a fish pole or something but a Tankara could fit in my BOB.

Give this a look! Notice where the Fly is during the entire cast! This is THE reason Spey is the Deadliest form of Fly Fishing there is!

yeah but you have to have room to cast like that, most creeks don't have that much room. That is the point of the shorter rod
