I'm trying to figure out my next move to put some distance between myself and urban areas and be better prepared for the eventual splat. I've been focusing primarily on the American Redoubt areas, but want to get a better feel for all good options.

I telecommute, so my only constraints are a broadband connection and it has to be in the US. My desire is enough property to raise my own crops and critters, trees for firewood and other purposes, etc., available water or at least a gravity fed municipal system. I think I can find those things across most of the US.

Additional requirements is that it has to be in a free state where ALL my Constitutional rights are respected. The location itself needs to be far enough off the beaten path so we won't likely get inundated after a disaster by refugees or gangs, but close enough for periodic shopping/medical/airport access, etc.

I also don't see total isolation as a long term good thing and think that post SHTF/disaster a small community or at least good neighbors are essential for trade/skills/mutual benefit/common defense.

I'm not asking for your favorite fishing hole so to speak and don't want to blow anybody's AO, just looking for leads to general areas that are conducive to my needs above.

Free state where ALL constitutional rights are respected will certainly narrow it down in a hurry.

I started this same journey 4 years ago, found my place and am working to improve it. Just remember everything is a compromise, and be sure to stick to what you feel are the most important aspects of your future property. I wanted 5 acres with a spring bordering a National Forest with a habital structure for X$. Ended up with 3 acres, 2 springs, old doublewide I fixed up, and borders a large wilderness area for less $ than I had expected to pay, put the rest into repairing the doublewide.

I'm in the boonies - somewhat - no building codes or restrictions, border the edge of a very large state park RMA, a small town of 1,500 is half mile away, but I'm only 6 miles from a wallyworld and a larger town that is the county seat, 1 hour from a major airport and big city with ample medical choices and lots of shopping opportunities.

Be patient, what you seek is elusive, but is out there.

Come to Texas my friend. Cheap land, lots of water in East Texas, lots of timber in the Pineywoods, great football and few liberals (I don't even know one). And we will be a Republic again one day.

I am partial to N. Idaho.. Have some good company up here and this county went libertarian in the primaries.
And there’s land that may meet your requirements..

Constitutionally, Alaska is a very good place to go.... Constitutional Carry State.... The Governor, is the only Elected Law Enforcement Officer.... All the rest are appointed, by him, and confirmed by the State Senate... less than 1 million Residents, in the whole State.... and plenty of Room, to find yourself a Place in.... After your second Year, the State Pays YOU to be a Resident.... No Property Taxes, on your Residence, if you are over 65.... Free Car Tabs if you are over 65... Lifetime Hunting, Fishing & Trapping License if you are over 60.... No Property Taxes, if you live outside an Incorporated Borough.... No State Sales Tax.... No Income Tax... Just GREAT Living, as long as you can stand the Cold Winters....

Poet said it a few hundred years ago "No man is an island" and I think in these days a group of people you can live with and trust is as important as location. Best locations left for survival, Alaska, high desert, etc, all are very difficult to live in if you don't have skills and resources to survive. Probably not enough time to learn how to survive in those areas without a lot of excellent local help and knowledge. No offense meant BTPost but I doubt if I could last as long in Alaska without training as a local 10 year old if TSHTF and all of the money I have would at best postpone the fatal mistake. Rural western Minn or eastern North Dakota is a different story. We all have our favorite sites, but knowing how to live in them is important. My first choice is extended family in rural areas, keep in touch, help when you can, and hope that they have mercy if this old man arrives with some food, ammo, a greenhouse, a few weapons, some fertilizer etc. F350 and a goose neck trailer. Visit and help get greenhouse, reloading, fertilizer set up now and hope to make the right decision about bugging out time, but afraid I may end up hunkering down. Only comment I can make, don't let the search for perfection in a location keep you from getting the good enough and resources together now and not be caught still searching for the best and having nothing if SHTF.

If I was able to telecommute every day, I would either move back to Montana or go up to North Idaho......with a quickness!!!

I googled and that is beautiful area but looks like Fed land and no town close.

I like this thread and would love to see more suggestions. Do not even consider CO unless you are a millionaire. Get places for sale but bubble prices.

Anywhere on the Olympic Peninsula is the place to be. All I would need is a pan, butter and garlic. The Chaterelle mushrooms actually come to you. [afro]

North Idaho is among the most beautiful places on the planet and one of the areas I've been focusing on. I've found a lot of nice looking land up there, but almost everything is on a predictable shot out of Spokane if/when the masses start looking to search for food and supplies.

I've pretty much, and painfully so, had to rule out Oregon and Washington due to the progressive politics that is sadly turning them into little Californias.

BTW, lots of VERY good input so far, and very thought provoking.

If the roving masses want to risk the gauntlet of armed and determined folks that live up here, so be it.. They have fifty miles of sniping to come through to get to my area and we are cut off from all directions by rivers.. Then theres the life off the beaten paths.. Life can be difficult here if you don't spend the time getting ready.. Like hunting or fishing to get the meat in the freezer:)...

I wanted to move to Idaho when we escaped Kalifornia, but the weather was too harsh for my wife so we moved to Southern Oregon and found a pretty ideal place. Oregon is going the way of the Cali-nazis, but isn't as deep in the toilet as CA yet. It disappoints me, but I really don't have it in me to move again. It will take some doing for the Golden Horde to get here and then they'll be facing a rather heated welcome.

That is the ONLY reason I'm planning an exit. My freedoms will be stripped and I will be forced to pay for others who choose not to work. What do you call someone who has lost their rights and is forced to work so others don't have to? That would be a slave.

If I thought it could be stopped I'd dig in and stop it. It will only get better after they stress the system so far they break it and the resulting die down will finally fix things. I don't want to be in the middle of it when it happens, and I don't see any other outcome. I'm just an optimist at heart...

I am hitting the road soon for about 6 weeks of tasting ID, WY and MT...then dipping down to CO to see a friend and the dreaded CA to visit both a silly liberal daughter and another friend with a good sized boat on the bay. I'll also be stopping early to see an old friend and PAW fiction author in the Spokane Valley.

With the stuff being spouted by our appointed (and almost surely to be elected by the folks in our NW quadrant) governor, I see the death knell for Oregon coming down the road. Like GOG, I would have a hard time trying to liquidate everything here to move, but I just might do it anyway if I find an attractive alternative...just leave everything (including preps accumulated over 30+ years to my son and start over elsewhere. There's a good chance it will kill me, but it might not be so bad to die still possessing at least a semblance of freedom. If I survive longer than this country does (possible the way things are headed) I can just head back when open season on liberals starts.

Well, if you talk to retired navy guys, they settle in SW Missouri and NW Arkansas in the Ozarks. Don't ask me why, (I vaguly remember something about pole shift) but the insurance carriers for miliarty will tell you that is where alot of them have retired too.

Lots of water, hilly, (and hill billy's) moderate climate and 1000 ft or more above sea level

I have looked at Kansas, in the right area they have lots of streams, and springs but you do have to grow wind blocks. I looked at Kansas and Missouri because they are at the heart of the Northern plate, so not likely to move if something hits the earth or you have pole shift. ( I realize that this kind of thinking is kind of out there for most people but I'm ok with not going where the masses are)
