I was wondering about some of the strange experiences that some have happened in the wilderness

Does a naked guy hiking the Appalachian Trail near Cades Cove count?

Once saw a guy with a big gray beard riding an old mountain bike in the hills near Santa Fe...he was wearing a white wedding dress with black combat boots.

Years ago, while exploring the Spanish Peaks area in southern Colorado, I got lectured by a wolf, a coyote, a bear and a funny looking dude named Paco. I wish I could remember what they lectured me about, but once I came down off the peyote I couldn't remember much about it.

@ 16 a friend and I were up driving around the back forest roads up on Larch.

We turned a corner and had a very nice view of Portland and decided to sit a bit. After having the radio going for who knows how long, with the car off, I went to start the car and of course the battery was dead...

We got out and started walking downhill on the road expecting a 5 mile minimum hike to find the closest house and then knowing we would have to unfortunately wake someone out in the boonies at 1am or later (never a good idea...).

Maybe half a mile down the road we saw a pickup parked on the side looking down hill with the driving lights on - old beater with 2 big dudes in it drinking beers and tossing the cans in the bed of the truck.

I had enough sence growing up out there that this was a 50/50 chance of a bad out come so we approached on the far said of the road and hollered just before we got there so we didn't startle them.

Turned out to be two really nice fellas maybe in their early 40's or late 30's who immediately offer us beer! We both had been drinking at that age so we thought it was awesome.

No drama. After a couple beers they turned the truck around and helped give me a jump start (I always kept cables with me and still do).

We thanked them profusely and ended up home by 11pm so it was an interesting night.

I might have had more but when I'm out in the boondocks I am not a very inviting person when it comes to sharing shooting spots (too many meth heads even 20 years ago for my taste) so I've never had an issue or been lucky enough to get a gander at another fellas nude girl:D:p.

When I was a single guy living in Eastern Idaho in the late 90's I spent most of my weekends driving and exploring. One day I was tooling around in the Island Park area off US 20, and took a promising dirt road east. The road wound up ending at an intersection with a second road, so I went north on it. As I drove the road eventually got narrower and rougher finally let to another road going east. I was about to get out and take a pee break, when I spotted a tree in front of me that had been scratched frequently by bears along with a sign about grizzlies. I decided to move along and find another place...

I follow this road east and it ends at a four lane highway running north/south. I check my atlas and this road isn't on it. I turn north as it looks like dead reckoning I can intersect another road that would take me back to Big Spring. I travel along this highway noticing that nature is doing it's work, but still in very good condition. Miles down the road I find it dead ends at a barricade. I weaseled around it onto a dirt road that eventually became gravel and turned out it was the road I was looking for.

Strange thing, when I got back to town - Idaho Falls - nobody knew this road existed. Somewhere in eastern Idaho is an abandoned highway that was never completed. I searched for entrances on the southern end but was never able to locate it or the road I'd found it on previously. The entire area is now closed to motor vehicles, so it would be a heck of an adventure to find it again.

Had what I can only describe as a pterodactyl fly about 20 feet overhead while me and a woodsrunning buddy of mine were gold panning in a large remote North Georgia creek around 30 years ago. We both got a good close-up view of the critter as it flapped silently by directly overhead. It had at least a 20' wingspan, and that's a conservative estimate, may have been closer to 30' and actually was sized like a small airplane, definitely wasn't anything either of us had ever seen before. Only had it in view a few seconds as it was flying in the clear area over the creek and it disappeared around a bend. The sight is seared into my memory, as well as my buddy's.

We had been panning this creek multiple times over several years, and did several more trips there after the sighting, never saw anything else out of place, just snakes, deer, a bobcat den in a pile of large boulders in the middle of the creek. The bobcats would come out on the boulders and watch us panning downstream about 50 - 75 yards away.

Buddy with me was a Viet Nam era Green Beret with three tours in country under his belt, and I've been rambling the woods since I was in diapers as my dad was a highly decorated WWII combat veteran and Army survival instructor who believed in starting them early. We were both stunned by what we saw that day.

I've seen other weird stuff while wandering the wilder places but this one takes the cake.

In my early teens we lived in the mountains and though our cabin was not IN the woods we had plenty of wild life around.
One night I heard an owl so I stepped out to listen and eventually joined in . Eventually it turned into 4 different owls 4 different directions and we had a grand ole time hooting at one another for about 20 minuets or so .
My brother came out to see what was going on and thought I was nuts , I guess he was right .

During a combat tour in A-Stan, we were sent to this forward base to prep for a holiday blitz. The Taliban were known to start the party during holidays and bad dust storms. This F.O.B. base is way the hell out there in no mans land and the nights are pitch black with countless stars. Sitting outside the second night, several of us noticed strange lights to the north east of our position. We got on the radio to command, they got nothing, we check intell, they got nothing, I raised a fighter patrol and the pilots radioed back real excitedly that they are seeing the same thing. We watched 4 F-15's going after this sucker, and loosing ground, finally they call it off and circle back over our position! No one ever said a word and no one reported any thing, But boy did we have a great time talking about what we all think we saw that night!

When camping with some city slickers one time.
They brought this one pound bag of jerky and not much else. Got back in the woods, it gets dark, everyone starts complaining about being hungry, and not being able to see. Turns out the the jerky tasted HORRIBLE, and all the only thing we had that would cast light for as long as they wanted was some emergency candles. I lit one up, rolled up in my blankets, and hit the hay.
Woke up about two hours later to find three men huddled around a candle in the grass like it's the holy grail. Haha. And somebody had had the bright idea to try and cook the jerky on the flame to improve the flavor. Funniest thing I've ever seen while camping.
Best part was the cooking actually helped the jerky!

I was camping with SWMBO and we were sitting in our camo camp chairs enjoying the evening when a tree squirrel came down a nearby tree and parked himself about two feet in front of her. She screamed, drawing her feet up onto the seat of the chair and, I swear; the squirrel sprang to its hind legs with it's eyes bugging out, screamed back at her, did two backflips and a tactical roll back to the tree from whence it came and disappeared.

Turns out there was a den in a rotting Hemlock Fir just the other side of the tree. My wife would send me out to stand guard at the entrance to the den every time she left the trailer until the day we left the campground.

Was out tree rat huntin' one day on a 100 acre track of dirt that bordered on one of the local lakes . I was perched up on a hill that overlooked a cove of the lake . A boat swoops up into the cove , spins around and stops . I can barely hear the radio playing , so I figure they're just fishin' . A couple minutes later , I throw up the 1022 with the 3x9x40 mm scope and see what they're doing . Well , I got to watch me a little sex show with a fellow and a right cute little brunette , then they were gone . Stayed for about another hour , no rats were moving anyway , guess it was to warm that day . Went home to the ole lady , told her what I saw , hoping for the best , no luck , should'a stayed in the woods .

On another night , me and a couple of huntin' , fishin' , drinkin' , buddies were out runnin' the roads one night , throwin' back a few beers . Well there used to be this old church that sat way back in the woods on a dead end dirt road . They called it the Devil's Church . Why , I don't know , but it was a pretty spooky place back there at 2 or 3 in the morning . Well we park the car , get out , standing around drinking a few beers , shootin' the bull , dead quiet all around , and just enough light from the moon to be able to see a little . So we start walking around , well there's grave's scattered around in and out of the wood line , and around the back of the church . Well , we're staggerin' around , cuttin' up , joking around , well , I stumble around and trip and fall into a depression in the ground . When I look up , I'm staring right at a tombstone , I'm laying in a sunk in grave , for some unexplainable reason , when I look at the stone , there's just enough light for me to read the name on the stone . Well , my name is a 1st , middle and last name , when I see the name on the stone , it's my 1st and middle name . I'm tellin' you now , the hair on my arms stood up , and I was scared shitless . I ran my ass back to the car and and got everyone back to the car , told everybody what happened and said let's get the hell outta there . We jumped in the car , went to start it , and the battery was dead . There was 4 of us , 3 of us jumped out and just started pushing the car back up the road . We pushed that car what felt like a 1/4 mile , while we were pushing , the boy turned the key on , and hit the starter , she fired up . I don't think we ever went back there at night again , altho , we did go back one time in the daytime , and I looked all over for that grave , and couldn't find it . Did I really see what I thought I saw that night , I don't know for sure , but in my mind I can still see my name on that stone , I'm still convinced I saw my name . I never found it in the daytime , but I would still bet money that I saw it .
Thats about all I got for now , fun thread here . Enjoy reading everyone's experience's .

When I was about 17 me and a group of buddy's went up in the mountains to play in the snow we were up in the high country breaking trail in two feet of snow we stopped to walk up the road to check the condition of road and we found snow shoe tracks that came down the hill crossed the and down the canyon I thought to myself who would be up here this high as I stood between the tracks looking back and fourth I realized that there was five feet between each step with a six inch toe drag between the tracks. Now think about this in six inches of snow a human will leave a toe drag between steps that ends six inchs before the next step. You tell me what u think

Took my son out camping (he was 8 at the time) along the Colorado river, below Hoover dam. There is a popular hot springs that requires climbing a ladder - so the end result is a nice warm shower just the thing after hiking in the desert.

It was dark when we went to rise off and just as we got to the ladder, set our gear down, we were approached by a young couple - sans clothes. They asked if we were going up to the springs/hot tub area. Assured they would have the place to themselves - they soon climbed the ladder into the darkness and were gone.

My son said - "Dad - that woman didn't have any clothes on"
I could only reply "Drinking makes people do silly things...she didn't have on any shoes and could have cut her feet on broken glass." Needless to say, we moved our campsite....
