Luckily , throughout my life , even at a young age , I never let myself get really dependent , or completely accustomed to anything . If I caught myself getting to complacant , comfortable , I would make a change . In my 1st , and only marriage , things just seemed to be going well , and comfortable . So , one day , I had the power cut off . The wife was pissed . I told her then , " If she learns to do without , once in a while , she won't miss it that much when it's gone " . So , we did without power for a month. Get used to the bed , hit the floor . I've been on well water for the last 30 years , so you know that water can get cold , that being said , cold showers has always been the hardest thing to try and get used to , especially water coming out of the ground . Alcohol , I will ration it out , I'm luckily , at the time not dependent on any meds , My biggest problems right now is , aches and pains from old age , getting old ain't for sissies . So , I know there's going to be some bad problems around the cities , so I'm just planning to stay away from them til they come my way , then I'll adjust for that situation . Hopefully they won't be as prepared as I will be . Have I got it all figured out , No , nowhere close to it . That's why I'm here , to learn from some of you on this forum , so thanks for all your help . And , good luck out there . Stay safe .

This is why I have an alcohol stock pile.
A 750ml bottle lasts me and my wife 1 to 3 weeks once opened.
After several years of buying 2 or 3 bottles, consuming one we have a freezer full. All the sealed bottles allow a tiny amount of product out through the cork, so when I open this freezer that isn't plugged in it smells like a frat house.
Obviously all the boozers are going to want more booze, the pill heads will be looking for the next best thing which is alcohol and the everyone else with no preps is going to want to escape.

With substance abuse and addiction, there is often an underlying behavioural component to the addiction...finding evidence based psychological counselling may help with the withdrawal process, and will help the subject to control the desire and impulse to use.

IMO.....If you need booze or drugs to cope day to day ? Why would you even prep ? If SHTF it sounds as though you would be using those items even more and then you would be worse off.....

In SHTF there aint going to be any of that. When people run out of food and water its going to be round the clock purge 7 days a week.

That's exactly why I want to have these items to trade with.
My wife works in the emergency room and she thinks the only goal in life that 20% to 25% of the population here has is just to stay fucked up on something all the time.

When I worked in an office, i was surprised at how many people were on antidepressants. So alcohol as a trade good... yes for me

Stockpiling booze even for trade seems like it could end badly. The likelihood of someone abusing it would have to be extremely high if SHTF. Next would come gambling. Finally feats of strength. Bad deal. [afro]

post apocalypse .. addictions and withdrawal symptoms will work themselves out one way or another.

If it's not available .. it's not available. DTs will commence.

Reminds me of some of the old westerns. It can get pretty visceral seeing how much damage a whisky peddler can destroy a community, and seeing how often they get put paid doing it.

If you've got the tools, and the knowledge, making shine is not that hard
My provisions for distillation are for alcohol as a fuel, and medical supplies.
I don't drink alcohol normally, but for the accessional glass of wine just before bed at night, when my back is acting up, which is not very often. A bottle will last a year or more . seriously.

Having alcohol to barter with post SHTF ,might actually be the catalyst of some agreements during that time ,the feelings people will be dealing with they are unprepared for; like loved ones starving to death, or illnesses/injury that are is not likely recoverable for any number of reasons.
What do you suppose a quart of canned bacon would be worth to some one that has a serious love for it ?
Obsessions and addictions will get people to sacrifice more then they might normally after a significant length of time just for the joy and fantasy of better times past.
People tend to give up with out hope, and memories of good times can help that along.
Some folk have an obsession for music , or movies ,and these also can inspire hope and comfort and DIVERSION, equally important in moral in a stressful situation.
Some men had survived with simply a music box or an harmonica . If one can reserve some sense of civility and culture ,hope can inspire hope and thrive .
I realize the thread OP was dealing with some what dangerous addictions people need to be freed of never the less certain of these controlled substances are valued in coping with different kinds of pain .
Discipline rather then abstinence, takes character, and that is what I believe is important to bring into the out come of this forthcoming event.

^Good post although I'ma pass stocking booze. Too many scenarios in my head that would be ugly. Killing mental pain being at the top. No thanks. [afro]

Do you know how to wean off of anti-depressants? Cold turkey can be dangerous with SSRI drugs. It is important as soon as whatever happens that you take count of pills left and form a tapering off plan. A pill cutter will com in handy. I know pharacists say do not cut SSRI drugs but s has HTF so you will have to.

I find it interesting that I can't find a more current stat on percentage of people on sleeping pills. I know that most doctors dispense them like candy. Sleeping pills are one addiction that people may not have thought of. What if you rely on a pill to get a restful nights sleep.

    Sleeping Pill Withdrawal Timeline
Days 1-3 Sleeping pill withdrawal symptoms usually begin during the first 24 to 72 hours after quitting sleeping pills. Feelings of confusion, changes in mood and memory loss are often the first to present. Former users may also feel anxious or fearful. Former heavy users may experience psychosis and hallucinations. Convulsions and vomiting have also been reported during this time.
Days 4-10 Over the next week or so, users generally have a difficult time sleeping. Anxiety continues, along with drug cravings. Physical symptoms, like sweating, increased heart rate and tremors, peak during this time.
Days 11-17 The physical symptoms of withdrawal begin to dissipate at this stage. Psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, may continue and panic attacks can manifest. In some users, depression begins to set in.
Days 18+ Over the next few weeks, any remaining physical symptoms will fade. Depression and drug cravings can last for several weeks to several months, especially for those who used the drug heavily.
