From the article - "Temperatures reach around 140 degrees, often higher, and the heat kills common pathogens. Done correctly, there should be no smell. Bones also compost, though they take longer than tissue." Back in the day, we designed composting operations to reach 160 in the core of the pile. The idea is to kill pathogens without getting into spontaneous combustion temp ranges. In a couple cases, we had to specify pile stirring to assure both conditions were met.
