First forum....ever!

Hello to all. After 23 years of active duty in our great Navy, I finally know what I want to do when I grow up. Adventurer and working on a masters degree in Emergency and Disaster Management. Looking to interact with folks of similar interests, who know there are lessons beyond the classroom, and understand that knowledge is the best companion for survival and Preparedness. Don't mind the harassment, it's standard here and all in fun.

But having been in the Navy for 23 years one can't imagine that you're a thin-skinned squid. Just not sure how you're going to put up with all that political correctness that's been creeping into our military as of late for another 4 years.

Funny! Actually, was a deck ape / Boatswain's Mate my first tour! Every generation has issues relating to and understanding the next. However, this new gen truly is different, more PC...and soft. Makes the job challenging and enjoyable! That said and one of the reasons that led me here is I've noticed many skill sets we used to teach such as open water survival have gone away. Sad and disturbing.

 

OMG!: I just realized all you semi-wierd Navy types probably (in aggregate) constitute a Motley Crewe.

Well, good. We need a maximum of motley around here. And the bigger the Crewe the better.

Welcome to Survival Monkey. I am probably one of the other Navy types that Ghrit spoke of. I have been out since 1994. Retired from that life after 22 years. For your 1st Forum you came to one of the Best, if not "THE BEST". I tried a few others and this one certainly stuck with me. The people here are very much like the family you would like to have, and very helpful. Civility and service to others is a norm that just doesn't seem to exist with the other forums I tried. I think you will like it here. If there is something you are looking for or want info on and can't find it, the shoutbox is a place to go to ask for your quickest response. Enjoy your time here. A good friend of mine began in the Navy as a Boatswain's mate back in the early 80's. Hated it. Finally ended up doing something with Crypto gear.

Open water survival would be a fairly necessary skill for a Navy type, one would think. Guess the Navy considers the newer PC crowd a little more expendable.

At any rate, judging by the sheer number of responses you've gotten just on your introductory thread, it looks as if you're already well on your way to acceptance into this monkey troupe.
