The Muslim community is more organized than I imagined.
Many large grocery store chanel are getting food 'Halal' Certified

Which is basically paying the Muslim imams a fee to certify your facility

So are you buying meat that us halal certified and does this mean you are supporting islam?

    What is Halal Supervision/Certification?

I sometimes eat Kosher certified food from supermarkets....so does buying meat that is Kashrut certified mean that I am supporting Judaism?? No, it means that I am supporting a kashrut certifying business that employs Jews....much the same as if one buys dates or olives produced in Jordan, you are probably supporting a Jordanian business supporting Jordanian employees.

It should be noted that ANSI (American National Standards Institute), a secular non-profit organization, offers certification and accreditation programs, that are presumably fee for service programs available to organisations that wish to be accredited or certified by ANSI....does that mean that anyone paying for ANSI certification / accreditation is supporting secularism???

I think the whole notion of religious dietary laws and ecclesiastic supervision is just superstitious B$h!t....being exploited so that someone else's cockamamie god won't get angry with your customers if they eat food that doesn't have some magical approval of some nut-bag cleric, is, in my view, extortion. Christianity of course has no special dietary laws like the Jews or Muslims...which has been one of many key points in marketing Christianity to pagans....However, not every "cracker" (as Donald Drumpf so delicate puts it), is magical, and only clerics, certfied by the cleric's church can create the magic that makes the cracker magical...so, in a sense the money given by consumers of Christian magical crackers support Christian (soul) food certifying authorities. Atheism seems to be the only belief that doesn't have a food certifying for money extortion scam. [winkthumb]

Of course not, an invalid comparo. A completely different case, there is no parallel with religion. ANSI is universal and crosses all religions. As do the ASME, ASCE, and other codes that address standards and safety (among other things) of all, believers and non believers alike. Your pick of halal and kosher is NOT universal and obtains to ONLY the faithful.

Agree, to a point. The faithful do not regard it as extortion, tho' you and I might look at it from that perspective. The oddity in my mind is that one of the faithful's gods must dislike and condemn the other guy 'cause his god's rules are different. (Or, if you take it as some do that the god of both is the same, just has different rules for different congregants for some perverse reason.) And uv cuss, vice versa, not to mention all the rest of the sundry gods that populate man's beliefs.

Do the engineering codes present opportunities for exploitation? Sure. Address that politically, not religiously.

    Bring on the ANSI bacon.

I won't be shopping at any store that is advertising halal meat , this way I won't have to be worried about offending some SOB that is going to make that store quit selling my bacon and sausage . Not that I give a shat if he's offended , mainly because the store will change for them , instead of continuing to serve it's long standing customers . Next thing they'll quit selling the hollywood tabloids with the movie stars on the beach in bikini's that I look at while I'm waiting in line to pay for my bacon . Instead , I'll have to stand around some short stubby , gibberish speaking woman draped in a full black sheet . F'em

The basic difference is in the blessing. Let's take kosher food.
I could be wrong here but my understanding is that kosher food is prepared in a particular way by a trained person, in the case of meat a train butcher.

For halal certified it takes a Muslim and a supervisor who face mecca to kill the animal... the packing companies pay for both of those people to be at the slaughter house. And pay for the certification stamp

Wone is based on good husband an dry and the other on belief. hope I explained that clearly

Both systems rely on the irrational belief that compliance with a given ritual makes food acceptable to their god for consumption by that god's believers....neither ritual adds any actual nutritional value to the food that is thus certified, and any health/nutritional value the practice has, is irrelevant to the religious belief itself.

I can tell you that our Salmon is canned in compliance with the Kosher Regulations.... The Rabbi comes every year, and checks us out, so we can put the "OU" Mark on our Lable...

The only health benefit for Muslims who eat exclusively halal foods....is not being beaten to death by fellow believers as a consequence of eating haram food.

With Kosher - it is up to you to buy/eat as you wish. Last I heard the Jews could give a flip less about what goyem eat.... You don't get to date their daughters if Dad has any say, but for Chow - meh.....

    [redacted]

It's all about tolerance - or the complete lack of same.

Religious dietary laws are about establishing exclusiveness and identity....about the observant, kosher or halal, "us"...vs the "not us" who don't follow our religious dietary laws. There tends to be less tolerance shown to the those who are "not us" than the "us" who conform rigidly to the dietary laws of "us".

Compliance with religious dietary laws is a readily identifiable marker to differentiate "us" from "others" The "others" are contaminated by the "unclean" foods that "we" don't eat...and, the "others" are therefore to be despised and avoided. Keep the flock of faithful together by food rituals and laws. Religious dietary laws are premised upon intolerance of those who don't conform and comply with them. Religious dietary laws are just one of many ways by which the religious attempt to impose theocratic social control, over others.

Don't know about now, but 60 years ago my dad sold beef cattle to a kosher meat place in Minn. The rabbi inspected our farm, we were not Jewish, checked the animals, would drop in now and then with out advanced notice and would check out the farm, inspected the feed we fed them and talked to the vet. I have also worked in a vinegar works 40 years ago and the rabbi would check the place and the product out before it was bottled. If it wasn't right, he wouldn't sign off on the labels and I have re cleaned a bottling line before he would and he did check out our sources of product. Can't say that the new mass production system hasn't made it obsolete, but the system used to work.

It's not that Muslims, American or otherwise don't like American food........it is whether or not the food (wherever in the world it is produced) complies with Islam's halal ritual requirements.

Evidently this Muslim has no objection to eating haram hotdogs in public (presumably made with American meat).
