Loved beer ever since I was a kid...

drank it most of my life...

but have been noticing a thing that makes it much less appealing to me now...

some seem to think adding more and more hops to it and making it more and more bitter is somehow... flavor?

loved Guiness when i first tried it... had a good flavor... just picked up some with a "now even better" on the box...

huh? Oh...no... much more bitter now... <sigh>

why can't they go drink an IPA n leave other peoples beers alone...

Just venting... beer used to be good stuff .. and it was good without so much bitterness in it...

    but now...

Never liked beer, always thought it smelt like horse piss...
Cider on the other hand... mmmm

But now a lot of the cider makers are adding sugar & making them to sweet... why mess with a good thing?

    Never liked beer? Blaspheme!

Know what you're talking about OldDude. For some reason a raunchy aftertaste has somehow become a modern fashion statement.

I too don't care for hoppy beer but it seems to be a growing trend. I bought some Giuness on Friday and thankfully mine was not improved. Now I'll know to steer clear of any with that information on the packaging. I brew a lot of the beer I drink and go lightly on the hops in a more traditional style for porters and stouts.

Too much hops in your system can lead to brewers droop, a permanent affliction. Look that one up.

Other plants were used for bittering beer before the Catholic Church got involved in the brewing business back in the Middle Ages. The other bittering agents were outlawed and you had to buy your hops from approved sources, which were abbeys that specialized in hops production, so the church got their share of profits from the booming beer industry of the time.

The Scot's used to bitter their beer with heather, and when prepared properly the imbibers would have hallucinations to accompany their beer buzz. One of my favorite poems is Heather Ale by Robert Louis Stevenson and it deals with the heather brewing secret held by the last surviving Scottish Picts. A lot of the ancient brews worldwide were psychoactive and provided a lot more than a beer buzz.

I'm researching and experimenting, and have seed for the type of heather the Picts used in their brew. You will know I have been successful if you see me running down the street naked, screaming "Take no prisoners."

Pretty much only drink micro brews now days....I like my beer dark..... porters and stouts are about all I can stand anymore.
The rest just taste and smells bad to me....I was going to say like piss water...but someone would accuse me of drinking just that. :p

I really fell in love with the "Old World" types and styles of beer, Finding them here in the states is a challenge, so I became my own Beermiester! I brew my own and am constantly inventing new recipes to add to my library of brew knowledge. Like most, I have found the American Beers to be bitter and over hopped. Even more traditional Beers have been "improved" to boost sales to the detriment of flavor and drinkability!

The beer tent needs to be a child board or sub forum or all the home brew recipes will get lost in the chatter....
