We had a wave from that lake break over our car one time while driving on US41 between L'anse and Baraga. Between the boulders on the road and the waves, I'm surprised they didn't close the road that day.
Lived in Houghton for a while, I know that road. That is big water up there, and right chilly even in the summer.
A nice video tribute with Lightfoot's song and the crewmen listed at the end. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zO0ksppBgT8"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zO0ksppBgT8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> (If anyone can embed this; feel free. I still can't figure it out)
I spent three days going through the Enlistment Center in Jacksonville, Florida in 1980, when I reupped into the USN. They played that danged song at least once an hour over the sound system. I was ready to take it as an omen for my Navy career . . . A couple years later when my little frigate went through a hurricane - I thought the omen had come true! eek3 I still get the heebie-jeebies hearing that song.
The Library was still there when I was. A few years ago, I heard it closed down. I don't know when it closed though. It's been too long since we've been up that way. Hopefully I'll get a chance this summer.
