Nobody goes bankrupt because of medical bills. They have serious financial problems before hand - like not buying insurance.

 

I know several people that have gone bankrupt because of hospital bills. And they weren't hurtin' financially beforehand, either. And they had all the normal medical insurance a person should have.

But when something like cancer ends your $200,000.00 a year business, and the insurance refuses to pay for most of the treatments, the money evaporates like spit on a griddle.

A family can go from upper middle class and owning their own home and four cars to broke & homeless in a year,

Just read a few of the many news stories about loving spouses that chose to die together because the money ran out, the insurance wouldn't pay, and the pain for one had become unendurable.

Man-oh-man WHEN are we Americans going to wake up! It makes me sick when I hear crap like "medical care is a not right" or "we don't want social medicine" or "we got the best care in the world"... We can spend money to build a military to protect the entire world much more than we would need just to protect ourselves. We can give money away by the billions to countries that even hate us. We can give social programs to those that don't deserve them. But, we cannot give medical care to our own citizenry and refuse to listen to countries that do and learn from their mistakes. Scrap the Foreign Aid program, rework the Social programs, and downsize to a military that is for us and not the world and give the citizens of this country something they really need. Hell it's our money anyway. Bernie Sanders did have this one correct. We are the ONLY first-world country in the entire world that does not do this. Social medicine is not perfect but its not worse than what we got now. Hell, I waited for a month to see my new doctor for nothing but an exam, then they lost my labs. Now, I am waiting for 5 weeks to see a specialist. I have had care in Germany and the UK and it is just as good if not better than here. The administration he is a joke! My friend and his wife just had a operation done in a upper class New York Clinic and it was a complete nightmare of incompetence. I've been back about 1.5 years now and my medical insurance has jumped up $450 in that time. We can't afford to give us all some basic health care but we can afford to give 60-70 billion away to countries even though we don't have it?!?!The last time I looked the WHO rated the USA medical care as 38th in the world - BECAUSE NO ONE CAN AFFORD IT! "The government cannot run a medical program?" Then don't let them! Just give them oversight. Find a damn solution. Nothing is going to stop the rising costs of medical care because they have us over a barrel - pay it or die! And, why don't we have more doctors? Think about that for a bit and answer is obvious yet we can give student loans for basket weaving. And, many people DO go bankrupt due to medical care. I have met two families since I have been back that this has happened. Ever wonder why the Germans or Brits who immigrant here still keep their passports? I could go all day about this but I am sick and tired of beating my head against a rock so everyone continue to have medical costs rise to whatever the market will bear even though your wages don't. The medical care problem in this country can be fixed in this country but the first step is to stop swallowing all the propaganda bullshit we are being fed from the entire industry.

Look, I am not going to get into a spitting contest as I have bashed my head against lunacy since I have been back but this is my opinion and what I have experienced around the world not heard or told by others but experienced. In my view this is the ultimate in arrogance and stupidity and we get what we deserve. How the people of this nation can justify all their dollars to be spent on all the nonsense that gives them nothing in return yet criticize other nations is beyond me. Oh yeah, let's not forget the big one, "It will break us financially look at all those countries that do it and their taxes." Those countries have been doing it for eons, longer than us, and they are still here. Our taxes are already outrageous and they tax everything but the air we breathe. Besides, we're broke already.

There...that's my opinion. Go build another super carrier or give $70 Billion to foreign aid or whatever then cry that your medical costs are skyhigh...And, like I said, I will not argue this point because I am sick and tired of doing so.

 

@Bandit99 I think what you articulated is the complaint of many americans. We need to focus on home and not abroad. And we have been lied too over and over about where our money is and or has gone.

@Flight-ER-Doc, respectfully I disagree. In the usa I know many people who have gone broke over medical bills. Bills that insurance won't cover. Consider that you may be out of touch with the simple middle american.

Many Americans that are self employed are going without insurance because it's cheaper to pay the fine than to pay the insurance, copay and all the things insurance won't pay.

This year alone the new rates are increasing bt 50% in most areas.

Bandit99 I agree with 90% of what you said, just slight details that I thought were not totally right, but over all pretty good. I especially agree with cutting off ALL foreign aid. Name one country that gets our money and doesn't hate us/US. Geo. Washington said we should worry about ourselves and let the rest of the world worry about themselves. What happened to the Jefferson idea of "Millions for defense and not one penny for tribute"? Obummer paid HOW MUCH for the hostages? Now they will keep it up and the sheeple will pay.

That comment about "no one goes bankrupt due to hospital bills" really makes me wonder too. The gov't WILL get their (well actually yours) money one way of another, insurance or no insurance, which usually cuts you off the second it looks like they are actually going to have to pay off finally.

Obummer care is socialized medicine and look at what happened to it. 110% increases! "Oh, but they can get the gov't to pay PART of that!" OK, but where does the GOV'T get the money? From the sheeple! And then the gov't gives a tiny bit back that isn't being used to line THEIR pockets and we are supposed to be thankful?! Obummer care and socialized heath care in other countries are the same thing, the sheeple are REQUIRED to buy something (UNCONSTITUTIONAL!) here, over there they pay for it through 90% taxes. In both cases the sheeple pay for it through forced taxation. Six of one, half dozen of another.

 

When we lived in Bolivia for a year on a mission trip, all four of us in my family got several vaccinations. At the end of getting the vacs, the insurance company sent us a bill for what the shots would have cost us without insurance. With insurance, the shots cost us a $20 copay for each of us. The insurance company said they would have billed us $5k each without insurance. When we got to Bolivia, the people who live there laughed at us over this. They told us we could stop in nearly any drug store and get the vaccinations for the "tourist price" (ie, giant cost increase because we're gringos) of $20 US per shot. I read somewhere that the standing price for an MRI in Belize is $250. It's possible that this woman could fly to Belize, stay in a nice hotel and have a nice vacation for less than they're trying to charge her for an MRI in the states. Gah.

This has been and continues to be a propaganda pill that is constantly fed 'we the people' and it is just not true. And besides, in many ways, they have a damn sight better life style then we do. Besides, we are taxed on everything they can think of here! So, what is our true tax rate? Hell, in some places they will even tax the tax! For example, you purchase something that has a luxury or whatever tax on it - well - those taxes are then included when they computed your sales tax. What the hell is that? Tax on the tax.

ObamaCare sucks because it is flawed from the beginning, it's a band-aid approach to an arterial bleed. That is the short and long of it. It was/is insanity at its best from the beginning. But, if other countries can have 'real' healthcare for its citizens so can this one. But....nooooo, we don't want to be like the Europeans or any other country. So, let's let our people die or go bankrupt or both! Better yet, let's give them something but tie it up with administration and gobbly-gook costs that take 2500 pages to explain so that it's profitable to everyone but the taxpayer. "But, we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it." Yeah, that's America. Hooray for our side!

My wife takes a shot in the butt of B12 every week. She comes home in tears because they will not sell it to her and she needs her shot. Thinking its a mistake since her English is not so good, I go and asked them. "Nope, gotta have a doctors prescription." "For a vitamin?" "Yep!" So, there is a $200 office call just to get the paper signed. I had her purchase a load of B12 when she went home this year. It cost - ready for this - for a 10 week supply it was about 50 cents. What to know what that costs here? Guess. You wouldn't even believe me if I told you but it is this way for most medicine here. Why?

Okay, I'm done. I could give examples all day but it will do not one bit of good. No more ranting. But, I am telling you I am right about this. I have seen and lived it. I leave this discussion with a quote from Churchill, "You can always count on the Americans to do what is right...after they have tried everything else." Ain't that the damn truth...glad to know we got 2 or 3 more super-carriers in the queue, cant have enough of those bad boys...

 

@Bandit99 if your wife ever runs out, just tell the Doc office she need a 1 month supply as she is traveling... they can give you the shots in advance, pre drawn. I've taken them for years and my Dr and I had to have a come to Jesus meeting about the office visit crap.

 

@Ganado Good for you! And, thanks, that's good info to know. And, yes, I am still learning...and still getting shocked as I do so.

 

Depending on which B12, B6 (there are 3 types of B12 each has a different processing time in the body so its good to get a shot of all three) But you can get 2 of the 6 at the local vet supply or order on line. They are no different than the Dr's shots.

 

I know two Fam's in WA state that have !! & can't afford to buy it now OR eat , pick a side , food or more Insurance or the Fine !! WTF !!

 

Funny: Obamacare was supposed to solve those problems.... And if my insurance goes up any more I'll just pay the fine.
