@Yard Dart I would say one last thing... I really don't like to carry and would go so far as to say that I know no one that does. It's a pain in the butt at the best of times but it's something I need to do so I do it and have got use to it. I don't want to carry but I need to carry. It would be nice in that we live in a world where one would never have to worry about their loved ones safety but that world does not exist and has never existed and I sincerely doubt it will ever exist. So, there it is, while it is a pain in the backside it is much safer to carry than to not do so... So, like everyone else, I suck it up and soldier and have gotten use to it. And, whenever I need a little motivation I think of the consequences if today was the day that I really needed it and didn't have it - that's more than enough motivation.

If I carry it's open until I complete my permit. I really don't go anywhere I expect to need a gun, however, there is ALWAYS something close at hand at home, on the road, or at work and it isn't a pistol. What I do carry pistol-wise is an M&P Shield 9mm. It is small, lightweight, and controllable. It hits where I aim and as with all pistol cartridges placement is everything. It's job is to buy me time to get to a nearby long gun. Never bring a knife to a gun fight and never bring a pistol to a rifle firefight :) Maybe watching all those episodes of The Rifleman when I was a kid did something to me...

As an aside, on my last camping trip, my buddy brought is 38 special carry piece. It was also a S&W, but a hammer-less short barrel revolver designed for carry. Comparing the two, although the power of the two cartridges was the same, the Shield was smaller, lighter, had less felt recoil, and was far more controllable than the revolver.

I had actually not been carrying lately in my peaceful little city. After carrying every day since 1975 I was just tired.

That changed after the election and I am back to the G19 in a CrossBreed SuperTuck IWB at 4o'clock and the Ruger LC9 in an ankle holster every day.

I'm rarely without a sidearm. Around the house and property I carry a .357 LCR in a Sticky holster. I just stuff it behind my waistband and I rarely notice it. I keep it loaded with Federal .38spl. 158gr.+P LSWC's. If there's a cougar in the area I change out to .357 Mags.
If I'm going to town I swap out for a High Power with 15 + 1 and two spare 15rd. mags. with 9mm 124gr. JHP's.
I've been thinking of starting to carry a truck gun. I've got a take down 10/22 I've been considering, but I'm concerned about theft. The other candidate is a M1916 Mauser chambered in 7.62 x 51.

At all times my 1911 is close to hand to settle any threats that may present itself. Like some others here, I live in a State that recognizes that we have the right to be armed as we see fit, not as some bureaucracy believes they are more qualified to make that decision for us.

And, living as I do, well beyond the more genteel folks, I have a long gun in the truck with me, just in case some arrogant forest creature challenges me when I am close to home. Just last week I was forced to remove a potential threat lurking along side the trail to my home. Took days to reduce it to manageable sizes, and wrap it up, keeping it all cold for later disposal. Darn deer! A true menace in the mountains..

Lol, don't get me wrong. I love guns. I have many friends who own guns. Some with a pretty good variety in their arsenal and I have had a blast firing all of them (particularly the SAIGA 12 with a 20 round drum magazine). My friends who own these guns make it a point to practice gun safety every time we take them out to shoot. They treat it like a martial art almost with a focus on trigger discipline. Every time I'm handed a gun, whether or not I just saw them clear the chamber, I will take out the mag and pull back the slide to confirm the status of the weapon. We make it a point to never flag or place a finger on the trigger until we are ready to shoot. I'm also not a bad shot. I've actually surprised myself with distance shots with a handgun. We have also practiced plenty of drills and defencive scenarios.

I find the 1911 to be the smoothest shooting handgun for me, I'm thinking that might be a good one for my first but my buddy is urging me to get a glock instead so that we both would have the same kinds of magazines.

(He also hates it when people say "clip" when referring to a magazine)

Story time! Way back when I was a wee lad of 16, a buddy and I went to the local convenience store on the way home from Church service. As we were filling our slurpy cups, in walks the biggest white guy I have ever seen and he proceeds to hold the place up pointing some sort of small semi auto at the poor kid behind the counter, The kid was scared spitless as he fumbled with the cash and cigarettes the dude demanded, and the kid dropped the bag spilling coins on the counter, Bad dude fires a round hitting the kid in the upper left arm! My budd and I are scared spitless during this whole thing, we are crouched down on the floor with our spilled drinks all over the place watching and waiting for bad guy to discover us and shoot us too. He grabs the bag and turns around to walk out the door, Kid pulls a .357 mag revolver and fires all 6 rounds! Every thing was in slow motion for me, I swear I saw all 6 rounds hit the bad dude, including one square to the back of the head!!! Bad dude stumbles out of the store and gets into his Chevy Chevette and drives off. Come to find out, Bad guy died of his gunshot wounds 3 blocks away! I have never been so freekin scared in my life up to that point! The next day, I talked Grand Dad into taking me to the local gun shop so I could purchase my first pistol! I took some of the Car money I had saved from mowing lawns and delivering news papers, and bought a really sweet Colt 1911 and several boxes of shells and a good leather holster and spare mags! Grand Dad then took me out and taught me how the Army and the Sheriff's office taught him to shoot pistol. I have carried every day since then. I swore I would never find my self in a position where I could be killed just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time!!! That feeling of helplessness was something I hope no one ever has to endure in their life, it changed me forever, In a way, I am thankful, it made me into a Watchful Predator instead of easy prey!!! I hope I never find my self in a situation, but I am as ready as I can be if it ever comes!!!

LOL!!! I knew you would post on this. Mag, clip, pistol or revolver??? I agree with you, it's all the same so who the shit cares. I know the definitions are different so anyone don't even start. Oh wait, Kell's not around any more.

So far as correct terms are concerned media and government mis label things and we suffer for it .
Much like calling one gun over another an assault weapon .
A knife is an assault weapon. the blunder bust is an assault weapon .
The second is insurance that we can have weapons of war to over throw a government out of control.

@Ura-Ki ... Since the guy was walking away and he was shot in the back and he was shot not once but 6 times - was the young man charged with anything? After all, he was shot in the arm... But, in this day and age, I wouldn't be surprised to see him charged with murder but I realize this was years ago, when the country had some common sense, so I am hopeful this had a happy ending but I am curious...

We did have an incident here not too long ago that while taking some courses the officer who gave us that block of instruction told us about... A young guy that is out of work with a family and no criminal record goes into liquor store shoves a gun in the clerk's face and demands the drawer in the cash register. The clerk complies sitting the drawer on the counter. When the robber stick his gun in his pants and lifts the cash drawer from the counter with both hands the clerk pulls a .45 shoves it into the robber's chest and pulls the trigger exploding his heart. The robber sits the drawer down, looks at the hole, says "you shot me", takes two smalls steps back and drops dead. The defense attorney is all over this and I have not heard the outcome but it comes down to the 3-steps of a good shoot: ability, opportunity and jeopardy (I prefer the word 'intent'). Of course, as in most cases, the last one is the rub...

The Kid in question was not charged with any thing, nor did the grand jury press for any charges! The responding Officers and Deputies cleared the Kid with in a few hours, and the formalities were observed "Just In Case" I was told that because the Robber showed clear intent and by his actions of shooting, he posed a clear and continuing threat, the kid was justified in shooting and that the number of shots fired didn't even factor in! This was 1982 when this happend, I know things have changed since then, and I would like to think we can still obtain justice for acting as this kid did! I still have no idea how the bad guy took a round of .357 to the back of the skull and didn't even flinch, it must have been a low power .38 or something that didn't penetrate very far, or was fragmented to the point it couldn't get past the skull and cause lethal results instantly!

As I sit here at my PC typing this I feel my NAA .22 mini-revolver loaded with frangibles in my pocket. I'm only completely unarmed when I'm in the shower or in bed. An even then a firearm is nearby. In the back of my Kia Soul is a flat floor/shelf. Under it is a tray thats been trimmed to currently hold an AR-15, 10 loaded mags, 20 gauge pistolgrip Mossberg 500 Cruiser, 20 shell bandolier. Tray has been trimmed to hold them quietly. Center console currently holds a S&W 442 Airweight .38 special & 2 speed loaders. My truck has a 30-30 behind the carpet covering the back wall & a .357 out of sight but within reach. With firearms stashed all over my home I sumtimes carry more than my lil bitty .22 revolver around the house, but its the least I carry at home if I'm vertical. If I go out it depends on what I'm wearing & where I'm going as to how far up the ladder of my handheld firearms I put on. A female "Friend" once said when trying to remove my clothing that it was like disarming the Marine Corps!! Not my fault that where she had wanted to go that night I considered not too safe so I had my Glock 36, Sig P280 in a pocket, NAA .22 in front pocket, & usual CRKT knife clipped in another pocket & my Leatherman multi-tool on my belt!

Man, I thought I was bad, I carry a double stack 10 mm 17+1 and 4 spare mags, Plus, ether a Kimber Compact Ultra carry II .45 or a PPK .380 auto, both with a spare mag in a custom lace on boot holster, And a Bowie Knife and a Gerber MK-1 fighting knife!!! Adding it up, that's between 80 and 89 rounds of ammo on my person at one time! Add in the truck gun's with 13 20 round mags of 7.62X51 and that's another 260 rounds Plus a shot gun with 40 rounds, Sheesh, that's a lot of kick ass fire power! Not that I can use it all at the same time, But I like options!!!
