    A 1000 bill is .004 inches.

How tall is the stack of 1,000 bills for 21 trillion dollars?

    no calculator handy
    .
one 1000 dollar bill is .004
    .
a thousand 1000 dollar bills stack to 4 inches = 1 million dollars
    .
    x 1000 is 4000 inches = 1 billion dollars
    .
    x 1000 is 4,000,000 inches and = 1 trillion dollars
    ,
    x 21 is 84,000,000 inches and = 21 trillion dollars
    .
divided by 12 is 7,000,000 feet = 21 trillion dollars
.everything below this line is fubar
    divided by 5280 ft (one mile) = 1515.15151515 to infinity or 1515 miles = 21 trillion $

So a stack of dollar bill would reach all the way to the Moon and then wrap a bit more than twice around it.

    12 zero's in a tillion, take out 3 for the 1,000 bills
    21,000,000,000 x 0.004 = 84,000,000
dived by 12 for 7 mill feet
diveded by 5280 for 1,325 miles

    Anyone see any math errors?

I'm blaming my calculator. Must be rounding up errors, but I'll take the higher stack.

No worries @Mountainman i've been puzzling this for days... too many zero's so I posted here so I could get some engineer verification [grouphug]

what started this was trying to estimate the physical size of the national debt.
    1,325 miles of national debt

to put this in perspective, the continental USA is 2,800 miles accross (appx) and from Maine to Hawaii its about 5,100 miles.

Checked it again and still getting the same number, help @ghrit .

Guess it's whole miles without the partial miles???

Should have been rounded up not down with the number I wrote.

Well, for one thing, you are going to have to use 100 dollar bills because they stopped printing those a long long time ago.

84,000,000 inches, or a little over 1325.75 miles...do they still make 1K notes?

eta: Ok, I guess not, so 840,000,000 inches or 13257.57 miles of $100 notes.

    You are correct, ma'am. :)

Assuming the stack is flat to flat and not end to end since the thickness is given and not the length or width and assuming that 4 thousandths is correct (which may be right, dunno.)

    $21 trillion = $21,000,000,000,000
    $21,000,000,000 divided by $1000 per bill = 21,000,000,000 bills
    21,000,000 bills X .004 inches per bill = 84,000,000 inches.
84,000,000 inches divided by 12 inches per foot =7,000,000 feet

Not so big a pile at that, roughly at 1,325 + miles, close enough for accountants. I'll take it. Now, how much does that pile weigh, and how long will it take to pick 'em all up when the wind blows the pile over ---

Remind me tomorrow and I'll take a mike to a bill, need to go to bank first.

I used a Digital Vernier Caliper
    old USD one =.004 ,twenty =.004 new 100$ bill .003 , new 50$ =.003
Since the 1000$ has gone like ours has (more to keep the tax evasion in check) I'm saying .004 is good.
My Debit / Credit Card (BOA) is .030
    CDN one =..074, two =.066 NEW 50$ =.003 100$ =.003
