Another amazing story of survival. This one has a great ending but it could have easily been an obituary.

Lehigh Valley woman ate twigs, drank urine to survive
Palmer woman ate twigs, drank urine to survive

Just as I started reading this it came on the tv news lol.
Their GPS stopped working and their car got stuck in the snow the woman hiked for 30 hours straight till she ran into a search party.
Zero preparedness, lucky to be alive.
When they call for snow out this way it will mess you up. Driving through a snow storm out here can be deadly.

Well if you look where north Hampton community college is that pretty much explains it all.
Probably assumed they would have cell coverage and could call some to come rescue them if they got in trouble.

Why is it people will venture across country and not be properly prepared wearing all the wrong clothing and nothing in the event of an emergency.
People luck out often enough but still the fact is, things can and do go wrong .
I've always taught my kids and practice having a back up plan.

Once again people survive incredible ignorance and stupidity!

I'm glad that they all survived! But, I would have never even come close to that situation, I would have been so far from the situation that I wouldn't have even noticed I was dodging it! So she had gone to survival school? Huh!

What did she do wrong? List the issues that come to mind. A thirty miles trek in a storm in an unfamiliar area.

They got their dumb azzez in a situation that needn't have happened at all. Totally unprepared or equipped! Check out where you are going and especially if you are bringing your child! Stay with your vehicle, seat padding is insulation! Want to get spotted, take out the spare, deflate it, use gas to light it! You won't believe how high, thick the smoke column is, and long burning the tire is. And, you have four more of them! That's just off the top of my head, now!

    1. Was not aware of the incoming weather.
    2. Got Stuck in a Ditch. In a vehicle not appropriate for the conditions.
    3. Zero gear even the most basic.
    4. Left the vehicle. Guessing the people searching for her found the car long before they found her.
    5. As mentioned she had a heat source and signal source in the form of tires.
    6. Ate twigs which take more energy in general to digest than they return.
    7. Drank Urine when she should have melted snow. Even wrapping snow in a shirt or rag and putting it under the coat and sucking the moisture out of the shirt or rag Would be preferable to drinking urine.
    8. Zero anything, even a couple candy bars would be better than what she had available.
    9. You are only in unfamiliar terrain if you didn't pay attention a long the way.
    10. Left the know (the car) into the unknown Sorry but that is my biggest hang up with the whole story.

    Tires are expensive.
I can buy a mil surplus flare gun and a box of 25 flares for less than the cost of a tire and alloy wheel.

That's why I don't have a 'purse', I have a GO backpack...I carry my survival gear with me. First aid kit, fire starting supplies, granola/energy bars, copy of Forager's Harvest book, pamphlets on mushrooms, tracking, and astronomy/constellations, umbrella, towel, multi-tool with compass, knife, and a change of clothes(seasonally opposite to whatever I'm wearing), flashlight with 5 changes of batteries, and various other things I can't remember right now.

This lady got very lucky. That's it. To be honest, it was pure stupidity on her part from beginning to end. She was lucky and won the lottery.

Freeze to death or burn a tire? Tire does no look so expensive at that point :)

I have seen this story on front page MSN today and Daily Mail has a huge write up. More details are coming out. Seems the husband went off to get help also:
Woman who drank own urine after getting stuck by Grand Canyon talks from hospital bed | Daily Mail Online

So they get stuck, decide the wife is the strongest so off she goes. Then the husband heads out in another direction. Not sure if the son was with the father or not. These people are real lucky.

Burning a tire sounds more like a lack of plan than an actual plan.

Burning a tire? Lighting it with what, a blow torch she just happen to have in the trunk?
Burning it while on the car?

Laugh all you want, but burning two tires saved a couple friends of mine that went four wheeling in the desert late in the year without telling anyone where they were going. (Recovering the truck was expensive. They had the tools to dismount the wheels, but not to take the tires off the mags that also burned nicely.) Both were smokers and siphoning a bit of gas helped get things started --

We sure hope that one who does dumb things can at least figure out how to make fire, those these dopes that went into the snow totally unprepared may very well not have that figured out. It would be instructive if we knew what they had in the trunk and glove compartment.
