Who else has no tv?

We don't have either an antenna for (Free To Air) TV or any type of Satellite or cable TV. The FTA stuff is so old that it is not of interest to me and the sat/cable stuff is too expensive and force you into a contract so...so, no TV. We do have a television and watch movies (DVD) we purchase or rent. Living in the boonies, our internet is capped so we don't stream Netflix or Amazon. I read the news, twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening and that's enough to stay informed. The cost of television is totally ridiculous in this country as is the cost of mobile phone service. I do hope Americans realize how much they are being screwed. It's imperative that I have a phone (mobile phone is our only phone here) but TV is not and I live quite well without it.

Not so strange if you give it a minute to settle in. We've seen a lot of that when there are cell phones involved, there is some latency. No worries ---

I went for years without TV. I loved it. I went fishing in the evening instead of sitting on my butt in front of mindless shows. I spent time crafting, reading and hiking. TV does suck you in and hurts motivation. Someday I hope to get back to life w/o a TV.

Yes! TV takes up so much time. Before I moved to the cabin I wanted to read more but never got the chance. Then in the cabin I finally could read books again. I got a library membership because my cabin is tiny and no place for books. Otherwise I would have bought books. The library lady envied me I was able to read like 3 books a week! Now a little less because busy with quilting too. But I sure love the time to read and other things. :)
I really hope to go fishing more next season. I love being on a lake or at the bank of a river. Time flies when near water.

OK, I'll admit it, I have two TVs, one at each end of the house, and there are times when they are both on, and with the internet onscreen right along side of one of them. I'm a news junkie, and have the time and inclination to keep on top of what's going on locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. I use a slew of sources, over the air and online, and do a random walk thru them over the day. I will say right up front that I do NOT trust alternative sources any more than I do the MSM. When I take the time and cross check, I can easily weed the wheat from the chaff, and NEVER take "breaking news" as anything approaching truth. (News, like a good sauerkraut, requires curing --)

Could I do without TV? Sure, and I have, and if I need to, I can again. If I have to get into my preps due to something akin to SHTF, I'll have plenty to do with my time besides keep up with world affairs. YMMV.

I have SAT-Tv and it helps make long Winter nights, pass with some entertainment... We don't have the available Bandwidth to use IP Television... The thing about Tv, is a judicious use of the OFF Button... mostly it comes down to Self-Control....

I have a couple of TVs: I just don't bother turning them on. A laptop with internet access, and a portable DVD player, am/fm radio, and smart 'phone provide any digital entertainment that I need when I don't have my nose in a book.

Edit: Because I don't watch free to air or subscription TV, doesn't mean that I possess any moral or intellectual superiority over those who do....just that it isn't anything that I bother very much with. I also regularly go to the cinema to see movies; My favourite cinema mostly screens a mix of commercial and art house movies, with occasional genre and foreign film festivals. The shared experience of watching a film as part of an audience at the same venue can be just as entertaining and enjoyable as the content of the film itself. :D

I do try to watch the news online but to be honest, most of the time it is bad news. I got tired of it because it makes me feel helpless. I can't change those bad things. So it makes me feel sad which is not good while living in nature in a beautiful happy place.

I understand that, unfortunately most TV news services tend to concentrate on the sensational and the extraordinary, rather than the banal and the trivial. "If it bleeds it leads" is the usual editorial decision making dictum. That said, it is worth staying abreast of current events, if simply that it may be useful in factoring into one's own prepping decision making.

I can understand feelings of helplessness about witnessing situations (if only vicariously via the news media) over which one has little or no influence. The art of it is not allowing that to drag oneself down with depression.

I agree to make sure it won't drag you down with depression. I'm a happy person that loves to enjoy life , with any challenge that comes my way. But I did notice by watching too much news, it had a certain influence on me, like guilt feeling . Like I'm so happy but over there people are suffering and I can't help. I just had to turn it down to less watching news and skip the drama involved.

I'm looking up rustic/nature pictures on Pixabay right now. I find looking at pretty scenic pictures alot more enjoyable than TV. In fact, looking at pictures of times gone by makes me want to throw all electrical stuff out the window and live in the olden days. But on second thought, I wouldn't give up my laptop or desktop computer, because that's where I have the pictures that make me want to get rid of modern crap...[touchdown]

I haven't had personally television since I got married and especially since my MIL moved in. Now I just read and change the remote batteries for the ladies when they wear out. I listen to the news when its on, then mostly ignore the rest.

When VHS came out we recorded every thing we liked and anticipated then that the economy would collapse eventually or we might be moving to a place reception might not be available .
I have over 2k VHS average 3 movies each tape . and another 1500 DVDs ,as well as a 2 terabyte storage about 1/2 full . only a few duplicates through out.
I get DVD movies when they become reasonable $5.-$7. .
At night I watch any thing I want to, and could do it for years and never watch the same thing twice.
Been with out TV for several years but I get out to the movies from time to time .
Don't care for horror or thrillers much , but most every thing else with in reason .
I actually prefer the VHS because it is easier to edit out the unnecessary garbage that had been included just to create target ratings , but not necessary to the plot.
Favorite movies are those that are survival related and reluctant heroes .
When my kids were old enough to appreciate it , we took them to universal studios and they learned how movies were made
We were even participants in movie demonstrations , which I thought was a great lesson for them both.
I think it is important that people understand movie magic and how phony things are on the set.
Because of all that is involved in building the set, it takes days of setting up for just a few minuets of product.
Real situations take weeks and months, chopped into moments on screen. CGI has made a giant difference in movie making .
I have had several friends and acquaintances that work in the movie industry , its not steady work for any one no matter what part you play .
If we endure the collapse at least a barter item I am prepared with is movies, because people are conditioned to need diversion,
especially if there is all the devastation that is anticipated.

I just recently got internet at the house. So now I get Netflix and Hulu, a lot of the Internet stuff, my daughter hooked me up with it, I'm not good with this computer stuff. Prior to this , it was DVDs and bus tapes. I refuse to pay those outrageous prices for tv.
But here's a story for ya.
I got custody of my daughter when she was about 7 years old. I didn't have a tv then, always cranked up the radio and worked out in the yard.
So , when she was 8 or 9 , I asked her what she was wanting for Christmas , she said she wanted some video games. So I went shopping for a game unit and some games. Found the stuff, went home and started wrapping the stuff for Christmas morning. Just about the time I was finished wrapping them, it dawned on me , we didn't have a tv. So here I am a few days before Christmas , having to go get a tv that I really didn't want so she could play the video games . She never did play them games that much . That was about '96. And about 2 weeks ago, I just thru out that tv because of getting this internet and the daughter gave me one of her smart TVs they call them .
So now I'm hooked up with the rest of the world.

One of the presents we got this year was a laser light toy for the cats, and you so don't need TV when you have cats who want to chase a light...especially when you have vinyl tile floor and you can make them run in a lopsided slippy circle...
