First thing I did when I moved into my house in the ghetto was put in a metal door.

 

A few observations...

1. The only disappointing thing about this video is that the intruder survived.
2. Nothing but good can happen when the local prosecutor wears a flannel shirt and work vest.
3. What's with that wimpy hollow door? Oh wow, my cat coulda busted his way through that.

 

Well, one thing we can all agree on is he went through that door like corn through a goose! My doors have a lot of glass to see all the trees and I also have huge glass windows that one could easily bust and step through so putting in steel doors wouldn't really help that much...which is the reason I haven't done it. So, since we have no kids I keep loaded guns around the house within easy reach and they go into the safe when I am not at home. It's about all I can do with this place. It's a security nightmare, a sieve. I went from a high-security dream home in Central Asia made of steel, brick and concrete to an American sieve made of sheetrock, plywood and glass but...it's beautiful here.

 

Score one for the good guys.

A situation occurred and a cop was facing down a 300# man and unload a .40 on him and he lived. (likely all center mass shots)
The perp,with a .22 pistol took out the cop shooting him in the ribs during the scuffle.
The vest had no protection there.
the cop died.
Practice shooting from the hip, aluminum cans @ 20' one handed. in real life there is no time to aim and take a stance.
For this I teach and practice using air guns . CO2, BB, pellet, air soft, hand gun, and rifle.
Become the warrior/predator, not the victim.
No practice , no survival.

 

You can't tell the type of round by volume since recording devices are only reasonably linear for a relatively small sound pressure range. Gunfire will typically swamp the volume level at it's loudest possible level which is typically only high enough for the intended design. In a cellphone or tablet we aren't exactly going to have a hi fidelity dynamic range.

No pistol round, including those mentioned, will guarantee a one shot stop or even lethality with several rounds. Hell, my Dad was tore open by machine gun fire in WW2 (also had his spare ammo explode when hit tearing up his side) and not only lived to see the day, but fired back before crawling to safety. Yeah, it was a bitch trying to explain to him that our chores were too hard when we were growing up....

 

I don't know who laugh harder at, the intruder or the defender. Both are total wusses.

I keep a 12 Ga loaded for something like this, so I doubt there will be much perp moaning going on.

.... had to shoot a lot of people while defending your life have you ?? No two people react to a traumatic incident the same way, no two will recover the same way either. So the guy is a wuss yet he shot a man in defence of himself and his girlfriend ? I would suggest curling up in a ball and doing nothing would be more wuss like....

 

It never bothered me whether it was a gun, knife, or whatever, , and I don't understand why it should bother anyone except maybe a woman. Them being life givers and not life takers by nature. Not saying they will, just understand if they don't.

A while ago, here, in northeastern Pennsylvania we had three police officers engaged by a single perpetrator. The first two police officers on the scene were armed with two, 40 S&W caliber, Glock Model 23's that were loaded with 180 grain CCI/Speer, 'Gold Dots'; and a late arriving officer was armed with a 5.56mm tactical carbine that was loaded with 62 grain FMJ 'M855' cartridges. The perp was armed with a single 1911 pattern 45ACP pistol loaded with 230 grain FMJ 'ball' ammo. He, also, had several fully loaded clips, and a handful of loose rounds in his pocket.

The perp started firing first, and immediately took one officer, mostly, out of the fight. The second officer began seriously working with his G-23; and the perp was repeatedly hit with a number of 180 grain, 'Gold Dots'; but he did NOT go down, and kept right on reloading and firing against both officers. (The kid had both a marijuana and some sort of machismo psychological hate problem.)

Just before the second officer's pistol, 'ran dry' a third officer suddenly arrived. He deployed both his Glock Model 23, (which he, 'shot dry' three times!) and a 5.56mm tactical carbine which he removed from his vehicle's trunk while the gunfight was going on. (I believe it was a Colt LE-6920.) One of the thirty-four shots fired out of that carbine hit the perp in the torso. It was one of two, 'non-survivable' wounds; but, still, the perp didn't go down. The final shot out of that carbine was fired from underneath the officer's vehicle; and it hit the perp, squarely, in the ankle. Yes, that final shot, 'did the trick'; the perp finally went down, and to everyone's relief stopped returning fire.

To the surprise of the engaging officers, the perp remained sitting upright after he was restrained and taken into custody; and he was talking, animatedly, to both the police and the EMT's while he was examined before being loaded into the ambulance. (He only seemed disturbed by the fact that he became unable to continue the fight! Apparently he had wanted to, 'get himself a cop'. Oh, well!)

On the way to the hospital, though, the perp's seventeen bullet wounds finally killed him; and when the ambulance arrived at the Emergency Room he was already dead. Of those seventeen wounds, only two were described by the coroner as being ultimately, 'non-survivable'. None were, 'core hits'; and most, if not all, of the rest — except for the only two 5.56mm rounds to hit the target — failed to significantly penetrate much beyond a half to one inch depth.

Only the bullet through his ankle broke any bones. The coroner attributed the lack of bullet penetration to the outstanding fact that the perpetrator was wearing a feather-filled, lightweight, down vest — A down vest! Apparently that lightweight vest had actually slowed the bullets down, clogged the, 'Gold Dots' capacious oversized mouths, and prevented the bullets from expanding in accord with their intended design criteria.

One of the repercussions from this unusual gun battle was a minor rebellion in the local police department. None of the officers wanted to continue carrying their 40 caliber Glocks, anymore; and nobody would load up with the department's, 'Gold Dot' ammo.

The town had to bring in one of the FBI's ballistic scientists from Washington, D.C. in order to convince the police department's officers that they were going to be safe while carrying and/or using their 40 caliber handguns. This scientist wasn't entirely believed, though; and it took a while for everything to finally calm down. The result is that some of officers now carry G-21's in 45 ACP; and the use of, 'Gold Dot' ammo is frowned upon. (Federal Premium, 'HST' or, 'Hydra-Shok' seems to be the way to go!)

All of which happens to be in line with my own general experience with handguns, and JHP ammunition. The only thing I haven't seen or heard mentioned, so far, is the fact that 40 caliber pistols have a very strong recoil impulse — Considerably stronger than 45 ACP! This is not, in my opinion, a desirable feature for any handgun to have. The 40's recoil impulse makes it a more difficult pistol for many users to shoot straight; and, especially, when that user is working under the inordinately high stress of a CQB pistol gunfight.

(Which is the principal reason, 'Why' I, personally, believe that today's police officers are, 'overgunning' themselves. Officers miss as many shots as they do because of the 40's inordinately strong recoil impulse; it simply throws too many of their shots off.)


NOTE: Many of the early news reports of this event — and the preliminary coroner's report, as well — incorrectly state that the perpetrator was stuck by police bullets as many as 27 times. Subsequent reports, however, have corrected this mistake; and the final count is, now, down to 17 actual bullet wounds; 15 of which were caused by 40 caliber, 180 grain, CCI/Speer, 'Gold Dots'.

(All of which indicates, at least to me, that 10 of those original 27 bullet wounds were actually, 'pass-throughs' that ended up being counted twice.)
