Back in the day, we did change of command parades (dog & pony show's) with fixed bayonets. Invariably, there would be someone that passed-out from locking their knee's, fall down and slice a troop or two nearby on his way to the ground. Ahhh, them some good memories right there....

ah....fix and unfix bayonets during a ceremonial parade, and during recruit training always seemed to generate one sliced hand....fainting during a parade was usually considered a self inflicted injury...lack of discipline, or knowledge in maintaining hydration and not keeping the blood circulating by toe wriggling and isometric exercises.

Yes, we use to have those damn monthly 'pass in review' parades down in Huachuca, Arizona but never with bayonets. We use to have a pool on how many guys would pass out from the heat. We had this 2nd Lieutenant, our platoon leader, that would pass out like clockwork and we made so much money on him that they finally wouldn't let us bet on him anymore. It's quite funny to watch actually as the person starts swaying like a tree in the wind and then boom! Flat on their back or face. Face plants paid a lot more! :)

Being in the USAF at what used to be Lowery AFB back in the 50's and on the team that went around to funerals as honor guard. Fresh uniform each time, often would not be allowed to sit on the bus so as not to mess up the pants, etc. Pass out in parade, go for physical exam and if ok, assigned to PT and marching to get into proper shape. No one locked knees as a quick way out. Never did have bayonets on honor guard though.

Yard Dart being AF, we were not allowed to play with cannons. Like your pictures.

I used to have so much fun, doing inspections, etc, when we'd have to stand in formation. I cannot, physically, lock my knees. They just won't do it. Didn't matter how good of shape I was in, it just wasn't happening. So I never had to worry about passing out, from that.

But after a while of standing there, my knees would start to ache, usually because I had to pop one of them. But that's generally frowned upon (flexing the leg, to allow that knee to loudly pop), but I learned that if I gently (and slowly) rocked back and forth, from my heels to the balls of my feet, it helped alleviate some of that discomfort.

And you would not believe, how often I was asked if I needed to sit, was I going to pass out, do I need to crouch down and put my head between my knees, etc?? Nope, I'm just fine, thanks! Are you SURE?? Yep, I do this all the time, thanks! LOL

Never did pass out.....and I wonder if anyone ever lost a bet, thinking I would?? ;)

Those are just pop guns..... 105MM. I was with the 18th Corps Arty 155MM towed for about 2.5 years for my first tour before moving to Infantry units. Our brigade was 3X8 155 MM and had a MLRS battalion as well. Our NG sister unit was self-propelled 8-inch.

I trained on 155 and 8" S P howitzers. Loved the 8". Standing on the front edge of the deck with toes out in the air and riding the front up in recoil! Priceless!!!

But all that said whose is biggest and done, I dunno if any of the other services toss their pieces around with attached bayonets, but i don't think so. Nor have I seen a drill team working with M16s or M14s. O3A3, M1s, yes.

The silent drill teams are impressive.

If i could expand on that... you guys sink ships, we take ground... and we strike to the heart of the enemy. Death from above has a meaning in my book, seize the day!!! :)

Think Polaris. Cleans the ground to you can take it. Our good friends that fly have some similar abilities, as I remember it ---.

I still don't know why M16s aren't used by drill teams.

We as a combined force seize the day.... no one force is better than the other.... just complimnetery. But we will still talk shit to the floaters in the Ocean and the Fly-Boys... cause it is what we is... and like wise for all.

Being able to call in just about any thing that flys with wings or with out is sure a comforting thought when danger gets close, and for that I always felt the safest with a pair of these over my shoulders!

When I was a Reconnaissance Sergeant in artillery liaison I was right on the MDL in Korea. During the "Pueblo incident" I had the USS New Jersey in direct support. It was pretty cool, a Lt Commander came in, briefed us, showed a short film of sinking islands. Obviously, I never fired her but it was an interesting feeling, during a very stressful situation, to have her at the end of my radio! Never forget it! :D

I always considered that ceremonial drill and parades were conditioning training for being a prisoner in VC POW camps.....probably also motivational training for not being captured by the VC.

Buddy works on making the new target designater lasers that look like guns and it is kind of freaky that a grunt with one and a radio can call in the first shot as a dead hit from either some arty rounds, missiles, or smart bomb. Truly death from above. Miss distance in inches from planes that you can't even see.
