Second rule in pet's agenda

After doing my morning chores I just had made a nice herb tea to enjoy a relaxing moment, when I heard my 2 outdoor dogs barking and horses running. I looked out of the window and saw 2 of my 3 ponies running wild in the yard. Ok. Minus 28 C so have to rush to get my thirty layers on before going outside. One pony is eating out of the birdfeeder, the other is heading towards the horse cookie bin. My third horse was in the round pen so I locked that with a rope. In winter it's opened up adjacent to the pasture and I water them there. The youngest pony finally followed me into the pasture and I locked it with the rope gate. One left. Her head was deep in the as good as empty bin but some crumbs still taste good. She wouldn't come so I took the whole bin and she followed me into the round pen through the metal gate that comes out into the yard.

In between I had to discipline my dogs because they gone wild. Once they sat down and got calm I could get those ponies back.
Then started the truck, got fencing tools from the cabin and drove alongside the fence to check where they got out. The truck is SO cold , but no time to warm it up properly. The tires feel like squares. Found the broken rope and fixed it. No fun with minus 28 C with bare fingers , screwing two ends together. One temporary post broke so I got a couple and put those in. A deer went through it. This is the second time this winter that this happened. First time it was minus 43 C windchill.
Pets have their own agenda and number two is escape your pasture when it's really cold.
Number one? Get sick in the weekend so you can't find a vet. Lol.
Anyway, thought to share a regular off grid day with naughty ponies. Lol.

Don't know about horses, but I never have owned a dog, they always own me. Seems like the present one, a Sheltie, has the control down to an art.

Currently at -12F and my Newfy is in Hog Heaven with all the snow, but my Golden Retriever isn't liking it much, He goes out quickly, takes care of business and hightails it back inside to go curl up by the wood stove.

Yes, pretty much the same thing with horses. They have trained me well. Lol

I got a pyrenees cross and a smaller version of him. She has the size of a corky but her coat is the same as his. Thick and warm. They stay outside. They run and play with minus 4e C windchill. My old dog is an indoor dog. Her coat is like the Irish wolf hound. She loves snow but can't stay outside long in the cold with her arthritis.

    I have to ask.

What is the cost, per hectare or acre, in a place with such extreme temperatures?

They would have to just about give it away, for me to consider buying there, I think?

Sheltie loves the snow, lays down and kicks, rolls over on his back, and makes doggie snow angels. Loves to run in the snow and if he gets ice between his toes, he comes over and hold the foot up and as much as tells me, I am not going to get my mouth cold, get that stuff off. He weighs about 22 lbs, his whole goal in life is to weigh about 44 lbs. Have him on a diet, limited dog food and green beans. Loves the green beans, holds them between his paws and eats them like candy. Very few thing more comforting in life than an animal that likes you and keeps you company. Have seldom found a person that is as good of company as a good dog for a quiet walk in the woods. That is one point I have to disagree with Chelloveck, I think a higher power created dogs, humans might be an accident, but I think a good dog was definitely not an accident. Oh well, life is as they say it a bowl of cherries, but sometimes, perhaps at minus 28 C, it would really be nicer if they were all pitted.

It depends what the land is worth. Farm land is expensive. Could go up to 2000 an acre. Or more. The land around here goes for around 110 cd. Per acre. Cheap because it's worthless. Pure sand. But for my ponies it's the best because no lush grass. They get fat from air. Lol. The thin grass keeps them healthy.

Hahaha, Shelty is lazy!! Lol. Has trained you well.
Yes dogs are awesome. I adopted the pyrenees cross just last summer. We bonded right away. He is so devoted to me and takes his guarding job very serious. He always watch out for me. On walks he runs ahead and looks around. If safe he let me know by running back and walks beside me. One time he warned me there was a bear in the pasture. But I just got him and couldn't read him well yet. He was reluctant to walk on. It was dark and I lost my ponies so was looking for them ( forgot to close a gate). He stayed with me but I knew he didn't want to go further. Then I saw the bear and said: ok. Let's go back. He was SO happy I turned around and locked my hand and urged me to walk faster. Lol. So yeah I agree. Dogs are the best. And funny! Always make me laugh. And yes....people were probably an accident in creation. :)
I give the dogs all the food they can eat plus some more. In this cold they need a full tummy. :)

You know how you know a dogs loves you?
Lock up your spouse and dog in the trunk of your car. Let them out 4 hours later. Who is happy to see you?
    Lol

For me, anything colder than t-shirt, flip-flops, shorts and hammock weather is "extreme". The ONLY other piece I add to that ensemble, is a poncho for rainy season. :D :D

An acquaintance of mine wanted a dog house for their Alaskan husky ,they had gotten for their kid. the dog was not allowed in the house
These were not dog people and knew nothing about the animal so arguing was out of the question.
This was in snow country so that were afraid the dog would be cold so I built a house for them they wanted.
First winter the dog never goes in his nice warm house, he sleeps happily in the snow.
When the snow got deep enough the dog slept on top of the dog house.

I made for little Sammy a shelter out of straw bales. She loves it. She is out of the wind and hay bedding. Big Django has a shelter under my deck. The both do fine even with the harsh cold. Lots of food and regular water keeps them going. I'm not used to have outdoor dogs but learned a lot of my neighbor who has 3 pyrenees dogs. Yep. They just lay in the snow or on top of a bale. :)
