I won't talk weapons often but I found this little piece at a local gun shop and the price was right. Figured it would be another one to stash somewhere. After getting it home and handling it a big more and firing a few cylinders worth of reloads 155gr round head lead cast through it and holding center of mass patterns out to 25 yards. About as far as I am good without my glasses. I was impressed. I am a big .38sp fan and a wheel gun fan. Just don't like autos and while I love my old Python it is a bit bulky for CC. SO I have been packing my old .38sp Detective Special. Not going to debate calibers and their benefits and drawbacks as it is too subjective. But the .38SP has a decent amount of stopping power. The M200 has a decent amount of twist in the barrel, good solid sights, smooth cylinder action and ejection, The trigger action is smooth, have some cheap .38s that pulling the trigger is like dragging a pissed off cat across a acre of sand paper. A little on the heavy side but not going to complain there as the extra weight eats the recoil. It ain't going to win any beauty contest and it is not all polished up with some machines marks but it is a solid side arm. For $169 bargain bin special (Regular Price tag on it was $249) it is comparable in function as much more expensive models. I think the detective SP just got retired to the desk drawer.
Rock Island has been climbing the ladder in quality and dependability for a little while now, I have been impressed with the 1911 I got, and I have heard not much in the negative on them, so I say you got a heck of a deal on a good servicable pistol, and that's what wins a fight, not how purty it is!
I was really expecting to get it home and have another throw away gun. I really am seriously impressed with this little piece. Wife even likes it and is thinking about going and getting the other one that was in the display case in the morning to replace her hog leg that I swear add 20 pounds to her duffle bag----errr I mean purse. LOL She some how fits S&W model 500 that bag. She came home with that monster and I was like "Why not just buy a AK and put it in your purse!" She says "I might not be able to shoot someone with it but I will scare them to death!" 15" overall length...... Way too much pistol for her.
I looked at those, and almost bought one. The only reason I didn't get that was I found the EAA Winicator. I really liked both of them, the deciding factor for me was that the EAA is 357mag/38spl. I LOVE my Rock Island 1911 enough to carry it most every day.
I got hooked on the .38s using them in the Python because well they are a whole lot cheaper for plinking. And found I like their performance.... So that started my .38 Sp and .38 SP +P fetish
Got my hands on these a few times at shows. I like em, and I'll put it in writing that I'll take one over a hi point any day.
Glad you found another handgun that suits your needs. To each his own. I started with cheap wheelguns, as it was all I could afford at the time. When I purchased my 1st semiauto for a bargain basement price, a standard Browning HP 9mm in 1970 for $80 unfired nib, I was forever hooked. Sadly due to economic hard times and a car accident with no collision coverage and an illegal immigrant with no insurance at fault and without a pot to piss in, the pistol had to be sold to acquire cheap wheels to keep my job. Damn that was a fine shooting gun. I have only bought a couple wheelguns since and have several semiautos. As I said, to each his own, and what you enjoy and use well. What counts is quick hits in the kill zone when need be. Nothing more nothing less. jmho
I have seen those and thanks for the review....my only experience with RIA was a 22 TCM rifle......and it's somebody else's problem now.....
Looking at the Display cases the vast majority prefer auto over revolver. Really just comes down to what feels right in your hand. I am about the same with my rifles I like my Galil but I love Bolt Actions and couldn't get rid of the ARs I have had over th years fast enough. But a lot of people love AR s and wonder about my bolt action addiction. Usually just prod my friends now days and say "If it takes more than one shot you are just playing with it " That being said it is fun to empty a couple of 30 round mags just to stay proficient.
I was so poor when I bought that Browning HP. It was offered to me at that price by a wheel gun fanatic. I worked as a delivery driver at Tampa Brass and Aluminum foundry. The owner of the foundry had a couple sons older than me working there in management. One was a pattern maker and machinist. His wife had bought that HP for him a couple of years before. When it was offered for the price of $80, I told him hell yes I want it, but $80 in one shot would have me begging for food, can you bring it in, lock it in the safe, and take installments of $20 weekly until paid off, then let me have it. He agreed and that is how it was purchased. My how times have changed. Suggested retail in 1968 when he received the gun as a gift was $129.95
144 feet (48 yard) test this morning 24 shots 21 in 10" x 10" Zone 18 of those shots within 2" of center of the Zone (Without glasses) 2 shots 2-3 inches high out of the zone and 1 shot 13 inches below the Zone, don't know wtf happened there LOL guess I was going for a knee cap. For a pistol I have almost zero time getting to know that is not bad accuracy. 24 shots at 75 feet (25 yards) all within 1/2 inch of center. Yep I think I have a new one for my holster. I think this is one of those relationships that is only going to get better with time as me and Herbert get to know each other better....... we might even be best friends someday
Not bad. I had Rock Island .45 that works flawlessly, is a copy of the officer's model Colt. Nice compact .45. It fell off a bridge into a river awhile back.
Shame when that happens, was canoeing on the MS River and my canoe tipped! all but one of my Galils went straight to the bottom in a deep channel with a strong current that made recovery impossible. Tragic loss
Still can't figure that 23 inches below center. Might have been a flawed cast or just good old fashioned shooter error and a moment of poor gun control. On the bright side a squirrel was running across a long about 10 yards behind the target, So I thought what the heck, though I missed him was just cutting that log up to split and there opposite side of the log was my squirrel... minus his head. Was going to be squirrel stew for me and Scooter tonight, instead Scoot grabbed it and headed into the woods with it, so it looks like Rare Squirrel on the bone for Scoot's lunch today. Not to self........ Don't shoot squirrels with .38 hollow points
HAHA! I'm a closet Wheel Gun fan! I have my Python 5 in. .357 mag, my matched pair of 1858 Remington non brass with the .45 Colt conversion cylinders, and my Dan Wesson .44 mag! Then there are my 1855 Colt Revolving Rifles! Two are original with one a non shooter, and now I have three clones, two in original .44 B.P. and the newest with a .45 bore and cylinder for .45 Colt! Yea, Wheel Guns are a hoot!
LOL for some of us they just feel right and good. And like grandpa always said if it takes you more than 6 shots you are just playing with it.
LOL! Grand Dad was a WW-2 vet and besides his 1911 issue, he carried an old Smith revolver in .38! When I was growing up, the .38 was all he carried, and could shoot the head off a rattler at 20 paces with it! He always told us that as good as that big .45 was in a fight, that the little .38 was a lot easier to carry and use especially in close! That Ol Man sure had a lot of good wisdom to pass on!
There is NO reason to bash Hi Point! Why (exactly) bash an affordable, entirely American made, effective, self defense/plinking weapon? May not be the prettiest, most elegant, lightest, or most prestigious weapon, but they are plenty capable of shooting someone just as dead as any more expensive weapon.
