Meditation for pain: The Gate Control Theory

    Is there another supporting source other than that website? Self hypnosis is well enough known, that looks like a variety. *(And incidentally appears a front for some kind of sales pitch if you click on the freebie.)

    Not being a dualist, I don't much subscribe to the notion of mind over matter....I do however subscribe to encouraging brain states that are conducive to therapeutically influencing the rest of the body. meditation is one such way, but there are others.

    Chelloveck,not being disrespectful or a dualist,you seem to know a little about everything.lm not trying to be a butt ---, I look forward to reading your posts everyday. Some I laugh at,some do not make any sense, but all the others are very talented. We might even let our president come down to your country in his spare time and straighten it out too.

    I just found the article and decided to post it. I've always found psychological studies and meditation fascinating and I thought this might be a unique skill that could come in handy. Everyone experiences pain. Being able to condition yourself to manage it when it matters could be something that could save your life. I'll see if I can find some meditation techniques to go along with this. I wasn't really aware that there was a product for sale attached to this post.

    I've just always liked studying what the mind is capable of. I found the gate control theory to be very interesting and it does make sense in theory. Anyone who has just broken their leg will likely be focusing all their attention on their broken leg and thinking over and over "I just broke my friggin' leg!". Being able to block out that kind of extreme pain could aid in survival if say there were enemy soldiers patrolling and you needed to control your screaming. It could help calm your heart rate and potentially keep a person from passing out as well. I am a big believer in mind over matter and I've had it proven to me many times before. Self control is very under rated in this day and age I think.

    I confess that I did not open the link to the freebie. But I also admit to have never seen an ad for free downloads that didn't have a hook embedded whether for a sales pitch or a cookie for your 'puter, especially when dealing with aspects of mental states of mind. In any case, a single source is not sufficient to self train for pain mitigation, whether physical or mental pain. Take the US Marines for example, they get umpteen weeks of pain to the point they can ignore it. That does not come from counseling, but from exposure.

    The whole thing smacks of those late night infomercials. "The statements made are solely those of the producer, not the network."

    Maybe I went to the carny once too often ---
