My oldest sister makes a very nice living teaching these kids, how to sew, in the Salt Lake City area... She has been a seamstress since High School, and learned from our mother...

I couldn't help but notice in school they don't actually useful and I'm pretty sure nothing had changed in 20 years.
Learn these kids in how not to get raped on a loan, basic math kind of tells you that but no one really puts it together. Or why people should avoid pay day loan places (I see mostly young people going in or out of these places).
How to use or not use credit cards.
    Properly fill out a check.
How to put bills in your name.
How to get a vehicle road leagal, as in insurance, tag and inspection.
How to put on a spare tire with out damaging something or some one.
What your credit score means and how not to fuck it up.

Life is hard and it's harder if you're stupid.

What special skills are required to nuke a TV dinner in a microwave oven, or heat up Ramen noodles??

It seems odd that conservatives feel that schools should be doing what should be learned from one's parents at home.....it smacks of intrusive big government to me. next they'll be a purity pledgin' and Intelligent Designin'......those millennials should just pull themselves up from their learning deficit bootstraps and just discover the wonders of sewing on buttons and scratch cookin' meat loaf by consulting their smart 'phone like everyone else does these days....Perhaps parents need to go to school to learn them some parentin' or at the very least....learn about contraception and safe sex that they were not allowed to be taught at school.

The Biggest problem, The parents lack the basic skills to teach their kids, and so putting more blame on the public school system. The days of person to person interaction have gone away, kids only interact with the teachers and fellow students in passing instead of actively engaging. There is no one point of blame, it's an entire system and it has gone on for at least three generations.

Yep....my parents shook their heads at my generation, and it has ever been so for the generations that had preceded them. Each generation knows less than the preceding generation, and the following generations are just accelerating the decline of humanity to hell in a hand basket....;) It's amazing that we are penetrating the outer limits of our solar system in the face of young people who can't sew on a button, or replace a light globe. ;)

So long as millennials are able to work out how to replace my incontinence diapers when that part of my life commences...I'm unconcerned that they are otherwise adulthood challenged. :ROFLMAO:

No problem blaming the schools, here! These classes were in place once and choices were made to fund classes on "feeling," self esteem, and gender studies instead!
I'm a lifelong proponent for "home economics" type studies, both genders, Jr & Sr high! Consumer math should also be required!

So I got to ask... is this a semi-perfect example of how we got to this point in the first place...

is this sayin who cares long as they take care of me?

don't bother to learn how to do things... just use you cell phone?

    HUH?

all the posts and threads concerning the loss of power mean nothing then... no power no cell phone?

    what do ya do then?

books are a good thing IMHO... and knowing how to read and write and do things like math are also good...IMHO...

saying who cares long as I get mine is kinda selfish and doesn't address the issue?

But I have to admit... I expected this... from this source... oh well...

Actually, the problem with schools is that, over the past 50 years, they have quit teaching critical thought...how to think and reason the answers to problems they face...in favor of teaching "facts". They teach what to think rather than how to think.

I am a 2010 graduate of our lovely school system (sarcasm).
Sewing/cooking was taught by a real bitch so I didn't go to those. All the financial classes where a joke even though I took them. Google has taught me more then those classes.

My mother didn't reach me how to cook so it's been a learning curve since 18. Sewing even though my mother was very good at it she never gave me a lesson. I am trying to find a class right now but I can't find any local.

I have tossed most of high school out the window.

We actually teach these in classes along with employment soft skills at my college...

Try the local community college or Mormon church...

What's a light globe, I'm pretty sure that Edison didn't invent the light globe... OK he stole the idea, but he was good at marketing it.

It's called a Bulb, Globes are what came out of the pod in the movie Body Snatchers...

Which of course is part of the problem in that those who need those skills are more often than not unable to go to schools after high school in spite of dumbing down admissions requirements and subsidies. Used to be that those rather basic tasks were taught in public schools at an early time. The concept, if not the practice, of balancing a checkbook was pretty obvious after learning addition and subtraction. Making change(!) was actually taught in 6th grade in anticipation of working papers at age 12. (Yes, I know that 12 is old for 6th grade, but there actually were kids held back in those days.) The thought of remedial classes at "grade 13" is fine, to a point, but all the way back to grammar school?

The mistake is giving over a task to some one and assume they are doing every thing right like teachers.
Teachers advance their own agendas, kids on the other hand , thrown into a class, have too much distraction .
Parents that do a through job home schooling, and use the GED to verify their accomplishments , accomplish much more.
My kids have made good responsible adults .

I'm on board with the idea of GED learning and earning. It still appears remedial. Uv cuss, there are those that did not have the primary schools opportunity, and are deserving of a chance.

Many of the SkillSets of Yesteryear, are NOT required to be taught, anymore... simply because the Teachers are NOW Schooled to teach FACTS, that can be TESTED FOR, to prove to the Folks that Run the Schools, and the .GOV, that the students have LEARNED something.... It would be much harder to quantify that a Student has learned "Critical Thinking Skills" with a Standardized Test....
The liberal Mindset of Teaching, says, "What need is there for Home Ec, is you can run to the Store and by Supper in a Box, or Frozen Tray, or a new outfit of clothes, good for another year...." What need is there for Practical Math for Life, when all you need is a Plastic Card and an ATM.... Just because the Banksters are charging you 18% on unpaid Balances, isn't a reason to change the ciriculum., from what we think your Kids need to learn....
Well that is just spiffy, until the Grid Fails, or the Pandemic hits, or the SHTF... Then there is going to be a lot of Sheep looking for some SheepDogs, but only finding Wolves....

Don't try your local Amish or Mennonite church....I'm pretty sure they only have kerosene lantern wick trimming and replacement classes....the really liberal churches might, just do pressure lamp mantle replacement classes if you're lucky. ;)
