This is a poll to see if there is interest in starting a Survival Monkey Book Club. It would have to be real casual. I had a great time discussing and reading the comments on the handmaiden's tale. It was an older novel that many had read in the past. We could cover different genres- classic, survival, I don't know... we are all busy so like I said casual. So I am just fishing to see interest and for any suggestions.

I am also interested. I have enjoyed for the past year some very stimulating conversations on SM and think this would be an excellent idea to stimulate more. There are some excellent minds on SM, far superior to my own (LOL!), which I enjoy tremendously and there those who always seem to give a different perspective, idea or outlook which is refreshing and interesting. So, yes, I would definitely enjoy and participate.

I do hope we would be allowed to only comment on and read the books we chose. I would hate to have a required reading list and feel like I am back at High School or University. LOL!

I would also ask the question, "what kind of books can be discussed?" The problem is many types of books hold value given the types of interests one finds on SM. For example, Robert Heinlein's 'Starship Trooper.' It is a Science Fiction, a timeless yet simple read, a classic, filled with examples and hidden criticism on politics, justice, morality, military...on and on and on. Anyway, I will abide by whatever guidelines but thought I would ask the question.

EDIT: I would add one more thing. The value of Book Club on this forum I think is beyond measure. I recently read 'Unintended Consequences' by John Ross about a year ago. It was a true eye-opener for me. Honestly, a game changer. While it was a work of fiction, many of the events were true facts. I went so far as to research and confirm what he said in the book to ensure it was all true. It was. Every line. I learned of this book here on the SM forum for which I will always be grateful. It stands to reason that would there have been a Book Club, a designated place for book discussion, I would have learn about it much earlier rather than in passing.

No required reading because we all have different reading preferences and we all have busy lives so some times I will not be able to participate, whiles others can. I have no clue how to set this up so this is a fishing expedition and hopefully we as members can get something interesting started. Book suggestions- time between novel selected to discussion time, etc... Starship Trooper sounds like an interesting book, will put that on the list.

@Bandit99 you are a valued member, always have been. (y)

they trashed the book with that movie... made em all look like nazi's with the uniforms n stuff... and the story line was so far off...

now I see why the author refused to give them the rights to make a movie... so they waited till he passed...

Yes, the movie didn't have a whole lot to do with the book (I mean how many do?!) but I still though it was a great movie!

Damn AZR, I thought I was the dinosaur. Most of them come out on CD now days. 8 track .... now that was funny. Last 8 track I bought was a Donna Fargo tape. I think I left it in the glove compartment of my 64 Malibu SS convertible.

I was a heavy reader up to my mid 50's and just lost interest in reading, not sure why. Have tried to consume some of the modern survivalist type novels, but they tend to be too much pie in the sky. I might join in on a book now and then but expect a harsh critic's viewpoint from a mean old codger.

I am really pleased that people are truly interested in a book club. Next step- book suggestions, read time etc... I would suggest a classic or one that many have read to start with, whether in high school or just one that is popular. Or a short story that we could dig into. No set rules, this is ours to create. I would like books that are easy to find. At the library or on tape, cheap n Amazon etc.. I do not want books that will cost the members $$. I can look in our resources, we have lots of pdf's

please do not start discussing books mentioned (see Starship Trooper above).
Alas Babylon- one of my favorites.
Hunger Games- (some could just watch the movie)
Classic Short Stories (still do not know about the use of force)
