Looks GOOD Melbo! ; )

Are you a HOMESCHOOLIN' PARENT... If so, good for you!!!! I actually have an on-line HOMESCHOOL GROUP, and we regularly get together with locals in our part of the country. It's heaps of FUN! Just scanned through your list...

Did you mention all of the LAURA INGALLS WILDER BOOKS?
Those are OUTSTANDING, and they do ALOT of talkin' about the "SIMPLE TIMES" which is beyond educational.

Over here we are very much "ECLECTIC" doing a bit of everything.
The McGuffey Readers are WONDERFUL, The Harvey's Grammer Books are as well, and then RAY'S ARITHMETIC, WOO HOO!!!! GREAT EDUCATIONAL STUFF, most people probably have very little knowledge with regards to their contents, sadly. : (

Here's a LINK to where one can get some of the above mentioned:

You also forgot,

A HIGH-QUALITY Dictionary like a
MERRIAM-WEBSTERS COLLEGIATE DICTIONARY
(which is great for all ages if you are into THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX)

Here's a good place

to learn about "HOMESCHOOL METHODS"
for those who are thinking about it or just starting out.

and a few others to share...

How To Legally Avoid Unwanted Immunizations Of All Kinds
As you read this work and put its principles into practice, there are two basic axioms you never want to forget. They are the rock upon which all your actions are based. 1 - Nobody, anywhere or any time and under any circumstances has the right or power in this country to immunize you or your children against your will and conviction. If they attempt to do so, you can legally charge them with "assault with a deadly weapon" and have the full resources of our laws behind you. 2 - At all times in attempting to avoid unwanted immunization, you have the Law of the Land behind you. Those who would try to vaccinate you against your will are on very shaky ground. Into every compulsory immunization law in America are written legal exceptions and waivers which are there specifically to protect you from the attempted tyranny of officialdom. It is not only your right, but your obligation to use them, if this is what your conscience tells you....You can read more @ the LINK below:

This is a great program to teach your kids to read. No pictures that tell the story, just words and learning the property way to sound out and read the words. We started this program with my daughter when she was 4.5 and at 7 she is reading the Little House books....basically she is reading at a 3rd grade level and higher. My son is starting the program right now.

Julie of the Wolves Trilogy ( AK Survival Story )

Hello there! Well I haven't been on S.M. in AGES! Yep, I know, I know... but I could not help it, as we get pretty busy with all that we do over here (including homeschooling). Plus sometimes I get "too tired" for the darn computer ya know!

Anyway, some time ago (months back) I had written that we were getting ready to read Julie of the Wolves as part of our homeschooling. Well to make a loooooong story short, our version is "THREE BOOKS IN ONE" (A Trilogy) and we read it all (it was one very thick book indeed) 1 day shy of 3 weeks! YAHOO!!! [applaud]

[IMG][/IMG]

What an AWESOME SURVIVAL STORY.... WE DEFINATELY RECOMMEND IT!!!! In the beginning it may be a bit slow for those of you who may not like details on animal behaviour, but after that it really flows, and you'll have trouble putting the book down, as we did! ha,ha

This is a very good book for homeschoolers... young & old alike!
Just thought I'd share...

My Side of the Mountain ~ By Author Jean Craighead George

Book title: My Side of the Mountain
By Author Jean Craighead George

My Side Of The Mountain - Book Description
In 1959, Jean Craighead George published My Side of the Mountain. This coming-of-age story about a boy and his falcon went on to win a Newbery Honor, and for the past forty years has enthralled and entertained generations of would-be Sam Gribleys. The two books that followed--On the Far Side of the Mountain and Frightful's Mountain--were equally extraordinary. Now all three books are available in one deluxe yet affordable volume for veteran devotees and brand-new fans alike.

BOOK REVIEW on the above Book of Interest

[IMG] Three wonderful stories together in one stunning volume,

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top>Review by </TD><TD>Isabel Harding</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Jean Craighead George's MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN is, quite simply, a masterpiece of children's literature. Almost half a century after its original publication, it is now available in this gorgeous hardcover edition, along with its two stunning sequels, ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN and FRIGHTFUL'S MOUNTAIN. Wendell Minor, illustrator of two of Ms. George's classic JULIE OF THE WOLVES books and many splendid picture books, has done the cover, and Ms. George herself did the fine line drawings for the three books. However, the true beauty of the volume lies with the words that grace its pages. In the first book, Sam is a young teenager who is tired of living in his crowded New York City apartment and steals away to the Catskill Mountains to live in seclusion among nature. There, he burns out a tree to make it his cozy home, learns about wild foods and how to find them, and captures a young peregrine falcon, Frightful, to train to hunt for him. The first book was written in the past tense from Sam's point of view, and is filled with details and entries from Sam's journal. Ms. George manages, in her usual way, to tell about and inspire readers about nature, without sentimentalizing it, and to develop young characters without underestimating them. The journal entries are written just as a kid would write them, in simple, yet interesting text. In fact, many readers have been led to believe that a thirteen-year-old boy actually did write the book. MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN won a Newbery Honor (later Ms. George was to be awarded a Newbery Medal for her truly magnificent JULIE OF THE WOLVES). The second book, ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN, is written, even more effectively, in the present tense, as Sam finds his way into more exciting adventures. He still enjoys a life in the mountains--but he is no longer alone, as his sister, Alice, has joined him. This book is written more realistically and in a more modern settting. For example, peregrine falcons are an endangered species, and Frightful must be confiscated by a conservation officer. However, Sam isn't so sure that he really is a legal government worker, and, along with his friend Bando, he takes off to find his beloved feathered friend. At about the same time, Alice disappears, and Sam must find two of the things that mean the most to him. The ending is very exciting, but the sequel never loses the charming, easygoing coziness of its predecessor. In the third book, FRIGHTFUL'S MOUNTAIN, Sam is forced to let Frightful free, as it is illegal to own an endangered species. Frightful, having lived nearly her whole life and depended almost entirely on humans for her survival, faces many challenges in her life in the wild. There are natural dangers--other birds of prey, hurricanes--but the book's basic story relies on Frightful's increasing conflicts with humans. Telephone wires cause an eletrocution threat, DDT poison weakens eggs, and Frightful faces a harrowing few days trying to raise young on a New York bridge. The result of all three books has changed my way of looking at the world. I have started a journal, I dream of living away from the strange world of humankind, I want to try dandelion salad and acorn pancakes, and I constantly watch the skies for peregrine falcons soaring above (there is only one nesting pair in Georgia this year but I am paying attention to conservation efforts to help Frightful and her kind). With this beautiful special edition of three incredible books, I look forward to sharing the story of Sam Gribley and Frightful with my own children someday.

Whatever you choose to read... HAPPY READING TO ALL!

Call of the Wild (A Better & Complete Original Version)

Call of the Wild is another AWESOME CLASSIC! Over here we had several different ones, and then after researching we found "what we thought was THE BEST" for our child/family library.

There's a new version of CALL OF THE WILD By Jack London,
which was put out by Danial Dyer. This one is THE BEST!!!!

WHY, you may be asking??? Well the above version has a "Readers Companion", Historical PHOTOGRAPHS from the actual REAL PLACES described in the story, and is also the REAL full version & not the CENSORED VERSION which was mass circulated (as they didn't want to offend readers) ...

Here's what it says on the inside of the dust jacket (below):

--------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CALL OF THE WILD by Jack London, is one of America's best-known novels. Currently published in more than twenty separate editions in English alone, this novel about the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896 to 1899 has been continuously in print since it first appeared in 1903. In his Reader's Companion to this new edition, Daniel Dyer provides a wealth of annotations explaining the book's many "sourdough" expressions and geographical references in order to help the modern reader see what London saw. Dyer also identifies characters in the novel-human and canine alike - whom London had known, and he spices his annotations with Northern Lore and tales from that astonishing time.

Many of the editions of THE CALL OF THE WILD currently in print are distortions of the original text: The violence has been modified, the rough language sanitized, the punctuation and spelling modernized. This new edition duplicates THE ORIGINAL FIRST BOOK EDITION , which London himself edited and approved. In writing the novel, Jack London did not venture far from his own experiences in California and the Klondike, and indeed, each of the fifty place-names in the tale can be pin pointed on the maps that accompany this edition.

Dyer (whose great-grandfather participated in the Gold Rush) followed in London's footsteps from Santa Clara, California, to Dawson City, Yukon, including a trek over the Northland's formidable Chilkoot Pass and cruises on the Yukon River. He accumulated dozens of photographs, maps, and other documents from libraries and archives throughout the United States and Canada, from the Library of Congress to the Yukon Archives in Whitehorse.

This volume will be welcomed by all lovers of Jack London and the frozen North. For the uninitiated, it will open the door to a remarkable time now gone forever.

---------------------------------------------------------

If you can find yourself a copy of the above described version, I'd say GO FOR IT/snatch it up if you can, 'cause it's OUTSTANDING with LOTS OF EXTRAS (INCREDIBLE PICS) which stimulate the mind! Even I LOVE it! ;)

HAPPY READING!!

Educational Book Recommendations for Homeschooling

Oh yes... here are a few others we also recommend:

The above image came out of a really good book called :

LOVE IN THE ANCIENT WORLD
By Author Christopher Miles & John Julius Norwich.

Depending upon "ONE'S STANDARDS" this one could be for a much more mature audience/age group, as it has some nudity/provocative poses in some of the artwork within. As for myself , I am an artist who's worked with nude models...daughter and I have already gone through this book with no problems at all. She's going to be 8 here shortly, and we didn't want to make a big deal out of the human body/human nature/look at the worlds TRUE HISTORY & not the censored version... as I think that is part of the problem now a days. Just my 2 cents/opinion! ;)

But anyway, there are so many options/things to choose from.... all one needs to do is find what works best for themselves/family! :)
Happy HOMESCHOOLIN' everyone!
