On this Memorial Monday, I would like to put forward the follow recommendations:

David A. Maurer - "The Dying Place"
John Stryker Meyer - "Across The Fence"

Both books deal with codename 'Studies and Observations Group' (SOG), a covert special warfare unit, that fought a secret war behind the lines (Laos, Cambodia and North Vietnam) in the Vietnam war. What struck me hard was the catastrophic casualty rates and the plain, insane fact that these small units of perhaps 6 men would be so far into enemy held country (regiment and division strength) that they were without normal artillery support and, at times, even air support - yet - they constantly were engaged with North Vietnamese regulars who was prepped and waiting for them, even put bounties on them. It has only been the last decade or so that has unclassified most of what occurred, finally, so that the survivors can tell/write their shocking stories. How any of them made it out alive is a miracle...

David Maurer's is a first hand account of his team and their actions while John Meyer's is not only his team's account but includes other teams as well. Both are excellent and well written and, frankly...plain scary.

I know one of those that went up north.. Would buy him a beer every time I see him but he only drinks coffee. He told me a story about it and he said he loves Marines.. Especially recon.. They saved his bacon up there.. Those are the men that I admire and would do anything I can for them!

Pure fiction post shtf 2018. Just finished it, newly published, seasoned writer, fast action, possible believable plot, little to nothing to glean for preppers/survivalists, but a fun read never the less. "Into the Guns" by William C. Dietz. My local library was kind enough to buy it upon my request. The ladies there are very attentive to my reading requests. Ya gotta love them!
