    Hello,

I'm the new guy, but I have a serious outrage that I thought you guys would like to see this.

I have already replied to the bottom of the Thread, and am CRYING FOR A RALLY OF BROTHERS to come together, and let this public figure know how we feel about his statement.

    Assault Rifles For Hunters?

As I write this, I'm hunting coyotes in southeastern Wyoming with Eddie Stevenson, PR Manager for Remington Arms, Greg Dennison, who is senior research engineer for Remington, and several writers. We're testing Remington's brand new .17 cal Spitfire bullet on coyotes.
I must be living in a vacuum. The guides on our hunt tell me that the use of AR and AK rifles have a rapidly growing following among hunters, especially prairie dog hunters. I had no clue. Only once in my life have I ever seen anyone using one of these firearms.
I call them "assault" rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" rifles. They tell me that some companies are producing assault rifles that are "tackdrivers."
Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don't use assault rifles. We've always been proud of our "sporting firearms."
This really has me concerned. As hunters, we don't need the image of walking around the woods carrying one of these weapons. To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods.

So much wrong with that statment, where to start.....

First off if the AR is a 'terrorist' rifle, the implication being that those carrying them are terrorists, then that would be calling our military (and most NATO troops) terrorists.

As far aas 'assault rifles' terrifying 'most of the public', the ones who would be terrified by them would most likely be scared of any gun.

If its being used for hunting then it IS a hunting rifle and a lot of folks find them to work quite well for hunting.

I just posted a novel of a blog for Jim Zumbo. I bet he'll get a lot of negative feedback from a lot of hunters on his tv show, and his Outdoor Life magazine editorials.

He caught dense flak on the blog that's linked to above. Seems like some folks just had to tell him the second amendment is not about hunting as well as cancelling their subscriptions and the like. Hammered, even. [own2] Sliced and diced. [tytyty] Whacked. [beat] And due every bit of it.

Looks like he took a beating over that one, but still got off light. He should be fired and banned from writing. I used to buy the rag off the rack, but never again.

I started to throw in my two cents in the comments section, but after reading just a few of the hundreds of comments I don't believe it is needed. I think my points have already been covered. Outdoor Life is going to feel this far and wide. NO!! As they should. Zumbo should be canned immediately. As for banned from writing, well that is another one of those "pesky" amendments that we just have to live with [tongue]

We did back in 94', even "Slick Willie" admitted that the AW Ban cost the democrats control of congress. Now, they are trying to reauthorize it. [soap]

oh, yeah, and being locked out of my account for the entire morning probably had something to make me think this.

I finally got in after changing my password a dozen times, and I use the same log in and passwords for all my forum accounts, so I know it wasn't that I was getting that wrong.

This has caused a Sh*tstorm of epic proportions. I am listening to GunTalk with Tom Gresham on the radio. 866-TalkGuns. He had Jim Zumbo on and Zumbo said over and over how he made a huge mistake, and that he had just come in late from a hunt and he was exhausted and he put his foot in his mouth. He said that he really didn't expect much in the way of comments, but that last he looked he had 2800. He said that he really isn't a "gun guy" but a hunter. Basically he just sees the gun as a tool. He stated that he updated the blog with his apology, and he stated that he screwed up. He also said that he good buddy Ted Nugent had called to set him straight, and as a result he had a hunt planned with Ted using AR-15's.

Now I can see the mistake he made. I still think that even with his apology, I don't think that he understands that the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting.

I am not sure why you had problems logging in, but I will discuss the matter with the administrator. As to being locked out, I can assure you that was not due to any action by the staff.

Guys, registration is not automatic, it takes a bit to clear the vetting. The login failure probably had something to do with that. Jeez, even melbo has to take a nap now and then --

Welcome aboard, Spurzmaker, I hope the rest of your logins are a LOT smoother. Good first post, I have to say.

Quite frankly, I doubt the hate mail came from here. Most of us understand Zumbo's faux pas as coming from the ignorant (if not out and out stupid) side.

Beautiful! When you get a call from Uncle Ted telling you that you screwed up [LMAO]

Like Seacowboys said, why can't we do this with politicians?

Here is the apology from his blog:
    I was wrong, BIG TIME

Someone once said that to err is human. I just erred, and made without question, the biggest blunder in my 42 years of writing hunting articles.
My blog inflamed legions of people I love most..... hunters and shooters. Obviously, when I wrote that blog, I activated my mouth before engaging my brain.
Let me explain the circumstances surrounding that blog. I was hunting coyotes, and after the hunt was over and being beat up by 60 mph winds all day, I was discussing hunting with one of the young guides. I was tired and exhausted, and I should have gone to bed early. When the guide told me that there was a "huge" following of hunters who use AR 15's and similar weapons to hunt prairies dogs, I was amazed. At that point I wrote the blog, and never thought it through.
Now then, you might not believe what I have to say, but I hope you do. How is it that Zumbo, who has been hunting for more than 50 years, is totally ignorant about these types of guns. I don't know. I shot one once at a target last year, and thought it was cool, but I never considered using one for hunting. I had absolutely no idea how vast the numbers of folks are who use them.
I never intended to be devisive, and I certainly believe in United we Stand, Divided we Fall. I've been an NRA member for 40 years, have attended 8 national NRA conventions in the last 10 years, and I'm an advisory board member for the United States Sportsmen's Alliance which actively fights anti-hunters and animal rights groups for hunter's rights.
What really bothers me are some of the unpatriotic comments leveled at me. I fly the flag 365 days a year in my front yard. Last year, through an essay contest, I hosted a soldier wounded in Iraq to a free hunt in Botswana. This year, through another essay contest, I'm taking two more soldiers on a free moose and elk hunt.
When I started blogging, I was told to write my thoughts, expressing my own opinion. The offensive blog I wrote was MY opinion, and no one else's. None of the companies that I deal with share that opinion, nor were they aware of what I had written until this firestorm started.
Believe it or not, I'm your best friend if you're a hunter or shooter, though it might not seem that way. I simply screwed up. And, to show that I'm sincere about this, I just talked to Ted Nugent, who everyone knows, and is a Board member of the NRA. Ted is extremely active with charities concerning our wounded military, and though he's known as a bowhunter, Ted has no problem with AR 15's and similar firearms. My sincerity stems from the fact that Ted and I are planning a hunt using AR 15's. I intend to learn all I can about them, and again, I'm sorry for inserting my foot in my mouth.

Any apology from jim or remington ( besides whats already in the blog)Would be pointless Jim's giving in to division and incremetalism. Jim'statements can be attacked on so many different facets, I can't figure out why he uttered such drivel....

    However: I did read one response but couldn't find it a second time to copy where a shooter talks about his AK being versatile enough to hunt with and also effective for a civilian to employ " having to "engage" terrorists" if necessary;
Constitutional philosophical arguments aside I believe this kinda "jack bauer delusion" was a part of basis of the the zumbo piece.

I have to comedown on the 2nd ammendment side . The forefathers intended thecitizens to hit the "reset button" on the government if it ever got away from the will of the people. They expressly did not intend for the people to be hadicapped with less than adequate weapons for the purpose. ".Gov" is careful; to limit civillians to inferior weraponry to its own forces....
    Also
I believe the scoped bolt centerfire( "deadly sniper rifles") will be demonized next ( scope of more than 4x, a bipod, 1moa accuracy, will nolonger be legal)... Iam surprised the Barret .50 is still legal, but would find one necessary to hit the aforementioned "reset button". So have no objection to private ownership.
